In other news, I splurged a little last night...
Bought an older, Solid Keeper with Inadequate XP for 180k. He'll last me at least a couple of seasons or longer and he is an upgrade in skill above my current starter. I'm hoping his experience will boost his ratings even higher (not his stars mind you - I've found it doesn't work that way).
I've now finished my transformation. My team has experienced vets (almost 50% inad/50% passable and 1 solid) in non training positions. I want these guys to last me at least a couple of seasons and provide me with better ratings for lower wages in the long run. Based on my weak defender with solid experience who puts up Solid defensive ratings with only 1.5 stars, I'm confident this will be the case.
Not to mention it gives my team the chance to sandbag unobservant opponents who just look at my stars and laugh. Ohhh, I'll attack that 1.5 star wingback, and then find out they run into a solid or better defensive wall. ;)
I'll let you all know how this all goes. I'm really interested in seeing how this works. Hopefully I can stave off the injury bug and keep these vets on the field.

I hope that all goes well for you, I too have splurged the past few days as I finish making a full B-team, and selling off a few vets who I don't need anymore as I look to go a little younger. If anyone needs an IM/winger with inad in both those skill areas and solid setpeices, or a passable IM, both for cheap, check out the two players that I have for sale. Ones 27 and ones 19 so feel free.

I don't know what kind of experience levels or deficits produce those events, nor whether there's a particular round in the cup where they come into force.
I'm scouring the transfer list for a playmaker; depending on how high I go, I'll follow that up by buying a forward, but if I get an irresistable deal on a higher skill level, I may only buy one player.

There will be a bigsoccer cup of some sort this season; I was just waiting until the beginning of the season to announce it. But, since there seems to be a huge demand :p, I will do so now:
ANNOUNCING THE BIGSOCCER.COM FRIENDLY CUP!
(not in any way officially associated with or sponsored by bigsoccer.com)
1st Prize: The lasting awe and respect of your peers here on bigsoccer, plus a copy of my old 2001 FIFA Laws of the Game
I will be organizing the cup via Hattrix-cupmanager, and depending on number of teams, we will either have a group, home-and-home knockout, or (only if there is very little intrest) a single table format.
If you are interested, please PM me your name, email, team name & ID, and league, and I'll work on setting up the cup. Deadline for entry is Wednesday, March 10th.
The cup will most likely begin after we're all out of the Open Cup.

Edit: Oops, no I won't go back and fix it, because it's now locked against editing.

Do we get bragging rights too? :D Not that I'll win or anything.
One rule that I think might be a good idea that I saw for another friendly cup, to make things fair, teams have to play so many back ups for the game in the friendly cup, cause most teams play b-sides. For instance, you have to have say 8-9 backups play in the game. Just a thought to make things a little more interesting.
I'm pming you my stuff now

Of course there will be bragging rights!
I like the backup restriction as well, but how are backups defined? Do we have each team submit their first team roster and all others are backups? Or do we make a rule that only 2 or 3 players from that team's previous league game can play in the cup game? Suggestions?

The way I can think of to do this, is since most teams set a standard lineup for league games, then those 11 players are your starters, this does not include injuries though which would change your starting 11. So for the friendly, you can only use 2-3 of your set starting 11, if one player started because of injury, then that player would be avaible without counting against the 2-3 you keep from your starters.
I know that's confusing so I'll use an example. Let's say that I have Jaiwant Satyanarayana start for my team (yes that is actually one of my players, weird name ain't it). Let's say he gets injured and Jeffrey Valdez comes in for him and starts the next league game. In my BS Cup game later that week, I can start Valdez, and he would not count against my 2-3 first team starters, b/c he is not a permanent starting 11 player.
Hope that makes more sense, hey we have at least 3 weeks to work this out. I plan on at least making it that far in the cup.

The problem I have with this though, is that if you allow that many, it can become whichever team has the best first team players. If you allow 6, then that is the majority of your first team playing in the friendly. I personally only have 1 player play in both friendlies and league games. Many others have a full second team. I just think it'd be more of a even playing field if teams used mostly back ups.
And jeremy, it will take over your life, trust me, I'm in London studying for a semester and still addictted to the game. Also, just looking at your team and players, the guy that you currently have for sale is probably not going to sell, people tend to only buy players with inad or higher primary skills. Also you usally don't want to sell players at their exact assessed value, cause many times that value is too high.

Will our cup be full of BS? Will the fields be soggy and the officiating crap? Will my team stink to high heaven? I can't wait to kick the fecal matter outta you guys.

No I think it will be full of complaining about the officiating and how the tatics of our coach need to be different so that our team can play the best football. By the end of the tournament we'll all be calling for our manager's head. :D

I'm not planning to enter (I've already committed to another friendly cup), but one observation about the quantity of reserves requirement -- some teams may not keep enough reserves to meet a requirement of only 2-3 starters. It would be perfectly reasonable for a team to only keep six or seven reserves, and maybe even have one of those be injured.
I wouldn't figure on having a problem myself, because I'd generally swap out at least two defenders, at least two midfielders, both wingers, both forwards, and the keeper (leaving two nominal starters in play), but I could see a newer team having issues, especially since one of the usual pieces of advice is not to worry about carrying a full "B" squad.

The good news is, the next friendly is on Wednesday. There are no games at all this weekend. Even better news is, you don't need to schedule one, as you are still in the US cup competition. Only once you are out of the cup will you have to worry about scheduling a friendly.

well since I couldn't go out tonight, (I leave for Amsterdam too early tomorrow morning to try to go out tonight) I spent the night updating my ht-arena site, so check it out. Now that I've got the hang of it, it may replace my tripod one. :)

love the backups idea also, just have any team that enters submit their starting 11, play only 2-3 of those in the friendly cup...it can be crosschecked after each rd.
I'll PM you my info...
