I'm jealous of your successes. I have slumped to fourth in my division (on Goal Differential), though I'm only three points back. Both of my losses were away and could be avenged in the coming weeks...I host the first-place team this Sunday, unfortunately my two starting wingers are both stuck at injured for a week. And since our league is super-competitive, we're a point behind the automatic promotion pace anyway. But it's probably for the best - I took a look at some of the third divisions and am pretty sure I would get my arse waxed up there...

Cheers and good luck

I have a question. I have heard of hat trick before, but i don't know a lot about it. If someone could give me some basic info on it and where I can get it or play it that would be great.

i have a question. What does the 20% thing for foreigners mean. I read about it in the rules but still does not make sense to me.

Wages for foreign players are 20% higher than they would be if the player was American. (Assuming your team is in the US league)

I got my team today and got a few questions.

1. How do I change my tactic? And should i use the 3-5-2 b/c i have heard about the game favoring midfield?

2. Should i put the full 20 k in the youth squad?

3. I have $300,000 and have bid 82,000 of it on some new guys (I started in a league that i was mid table and had 5 points.) How many seats should I add to my 7000 seat stadium?

4. What should i do about training? Should i train a specific trait and at what percent?

5. When i promote a youth player whats the least rating in his respective attribute should i keep him? i.e inadaquete etc.

6. I'm in V.24 whats the minimum rating should I have in a players attribute?

7. I have no assistants so how many of each type should I have?

and many of your questions will be answered

also, use the community pages on the hattrick front page and it will lead you to a bunch of hattrick fan pages that have strategy tips and the like. hattrick gameday is very good.

words of wisdom: don't bid on players yet. there is no fear of relegation where you are. invest in a passable coach or better, youth squad, assistants, and stadium enlargement.

and check out gameday for answers to your questions

Tactics are changed by the dropdown boxes below the player selection box. To get 3-5-2 (from the standard 4-4-2), move one defender (a wingback or central) to 'extra inner midfielder'. Playing a player offensive, defensive, towards wing or towards middle doesn't change their position, just how their skills are weighed in the match calculations.

3-5-2 is popular because midfield is the most dominant of all the ratings. You can only have 3 inner midfielders (well, you can have more, but it screws up training, so DON'T!), so people generally use 3. I play 3-4-3 (I train scoring), but use 3 inners and only 1 wing.

2. Should i put the full 20 k in the youth squad?

Only if you can afford to. Finances are key early on.

3. I have $300,000 and have bid 82,000 of it on some new guys (I started in a league that i was mid table and had 5 points.) How many seats should I add to my 7000 seat stadium?

Go slow on early bidding. You're going to be poor for a while. The optimum size of the stadium is anywhere from 20 to 30 times your fanclub size. 20 if you lose a lot, and 30 if you win a lot. Starting with 500 fanclub members, your club will grow quickly, so it's hard to guage. Just be patient and don't go broke.

4. What should i do about training? Should i train a specific trait and at what percent?

Depends on the skills of your young players. Ideally you want to train all 17 yr olds, who are as good as you can get. Older players take longer to improve, and keepers go up the fastest (I've heard 4 weeks with a solid coach and 10 keeper assistants at 17 yrs. Not sure if I believe that, but 5 weeks I do). If you train playmaking, use 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 and get 6 good trainees, playing 3 on Sunday and 3 on Wednesday, swapping them out, as inner mids. Defending, use 4-4-2/4-5-1/5-4-1 and get 8-10 trainees, swap Sun/Weds. Scoring, 3-4-3 is really the only option, and get 6. Keepers you can only train 2 of, one on Sunday, one on Weds, so get 2 only (obviously). Any formation works for keepers. 95% is what I started out at, and I've never been below it. Once you can afford physios you can go to 100%.

5. When i promote a youth player whats the least rating in his respective attribute should i keep him? i.e inadaquete etc.

Anyone below inadequate is not likely to sell, and not likely to be a good candidate to train. But a 17 yr old weak player has more long-term potential than a 19 yr old inadequate player, so age is a factor (especially when side-skills are involved).

6. I'm in V.24 whats the minimum rating should I have in a players attribute?

No real minimum. Your team is new and in the lowest level. Just go slow and don't go bankrupt, and it will come in time. You can't relegate from V in the US, so last isn't necessarily bad, though it's obviously not good.

7. I have no assistants so how many of each type should I have?
Don't go overboard. Finances are key. When you can afford all that you want, I'd recommend:

8 assistants/2 keeper coaches (reverse if training keeper)
10 physios
10 doctors (if you have injured players)
6-10 spokesmen (depending on how well you are doing)

Only add an economist if you have more than $500,000 in the bank. If you get more than that, there's a chart floating around that tells you when it's advisable to add a 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Only add psychologists if your team spirt/confidence are regularly bad. Actually, I don't think they help spirit much at all.

A 2-1 win in my first ML match!

Of course my next 3 matches are Red Star Belgrade, Slashers FC, and Kansas City Wizards. Not looking pretty.

Good start for me, winning 6-1. I think I'll do well in D4.

Considering I was in D2 three seasons ago, though, that's not so impressive.

In my first Division II league match, I won at home 4-0. Believe it or not, it could've gone either way as we were evenly matched.

Although I currently reside in the top spot of II.1, I have no doubt that I'm in for a relegation fight to the death this season. I have serious form issues at the moment as well, and one of my starting middies went down for 4 weeks.

I have 3 of my first 4 league matches at home, I'd like to win 2. I hate having this schedule since it means 3 of my last 4 league matches will be away. Heavy sigh.........

I won my first league match 6-1. But I was also a cup upset victim. Div V. team knocked me out 4-2. I went 2 weeks without playing a 3-5-2 and forgot about the experience thing. And 2 of my central mids were at weak stamina. D'oh!

At least I can concentrate on the league...although I'm playing for 2nd this year, I'm afraid.

4-0 Cup win. Played a joke team. I expect some tougher competition next week.

What is the downside (economically and other?) for getting relegated. I am in div 4 right now, and looking at the other teams I almost certain to go down to div 5.

I have been training my defenders for a little while and want to keep with that strategy for at least this season. The other teams are way ahead of me with PM and I can't catch up very quickly.

So I can tell I will be losing the possession stats and inner mid battle and therefore lots of matches.

I am hoping I can suffer the relegation lightly and come back after a couple of seasons in div 5 strengthening my inner mids then.

I already have a couple of solid defenders and other youth pulls in there at passable I think. So I am thinking I can sell one or two of those to keep me safe economically next season.

What do you think?

I think it's pretty tough to get relegated rom D. IV. I know that Div. V is getting a lot better and probably at about where Div. IV was at when I joined, but every year my Div. seems to have one or two teams that just can't keep a regular manager, and end up going down. But I could be putting my foot in my mouth again.

Lonestar, didn't want to play a friendly against a fellow BS'er? Bummer on getting cUpset. It hit me last week.
