You guys asked for it...just want to give some encouragement to all the other mediocre managers out there.
League 4-4-4
Cup 1-0-1
Friendly 1-1-10
Overall 6-5-14

Did you find out why you got the card, and why it's still a yellow?
Totally unrelated to Hattrick, but I've found that in the time I was away from this board (roughly from Jan 2002 until about a week before the World Cup started) the moderating has gotten pathetic. During the WC, there were about half a dozen mods I wanted to put on my ignore list, simply because they had habits of posting inflammatory and totally useless posts in otherwise useful threads. Unfortunately you can't ignore mods, no matter how bad they are. No way I'd contribute any cash (no matter how little) to this board, simply based on that alone.

I definitely agree about some of the mods. There are great ones and horrible ones who abuse their 'power.' I wish there was some way they could be ignored too.
Sorry but I just can't say anything else, there's a hand smothering my face. :)
My posts are being edited.
Now back to Hattrick discussion...

I will post my results soon, I must figure them out first. I would like to thank everyone on this thread, plus the other 3 (now erased threads) for helping me out. In my 2nd season, I will be promoted to div IV. Thanks. I have followed the advice I have recieved from Lone Star, Rifkin, Dan Loney, and others (no offense if I didn't mention you) to success. Looking at Div IV, it isn't that tough, and I think I have a shot at competing for promotion next season. Thanks again.

OK, here are my results:
(W-L-T)
Cup-2-1-0
League: 10-1-1
Friendly: 6-2-2
Total: 18-4-3
Not a bad record at all. Although, I would have liked to have gotten through the group stages of the LOTA Youth Cup!!!

Brian,
I noticed you played a 5-2-3 formation tonight. That's probably going to cost you training for the week.
Hattrick has a limit on positionings in order to keep massive training in check (like playing a 10-0-0 in friendlies to train 10 defenders in a match). You can only play one of the standard formations (listed on your team's training page), and also only a certain amount of players in any given area.
Now, since you didn't have too many players in any one area, you might still get training. I think the 'no training' thing has some randomness to it, and you can get away with bad formations sometimes, but not 100% sure.
The normal accepted formations are
4-3-3
4-5-1
3-5-2
5-3-2
3-4-3
5-4-1
And the limits are no more than 3 center defs, 3 inner mids, or 3 forwards. Just to check it, one match last season I used 3-4-3, but played with no wingers and four inner mids, wondering if, since I was excellent with the 3-4-3, maybe I could get away with it. I couldn't. But since you didn't jam one area, maybe you can get away with your 5-2-3?

Rifken,
If you still browse through these Hattrick threads you may be interested to know that next week I travel to play Middlesex Athletic in a promotion playoff. I won III.1, but lost out on the auto-promotion by one friggin point after drawing my last match 1-1.
I really don't think I have a shot......but stranger things have been known to happen in this game. The worst part is that III.1 looks to be getting VERY tough next season. {sigh}

Rifken,
If you still browse through these Hattrick threads you may be interested to know that next week I host Panther City FC in a promotion playoff. I'm 6th in II.4, but lost out on avoiding a playoff game by six friggin points, after losing more games than I won during the season.
I really don't think I have a shot of staying up......but stranger things have been known to happen in this game. The worst part is that III looks to be getting VERY tough next season. {sigh}
Middlesex Athletic
II.4
Hopefully resigned to II.4 until I go to ML

Considering my Hattrick reputation, maybe I should be a politician :)

So Rif...how did Criminal get so good so fast. I'm speculating he is getting some assistance (coaching) from you. Am I right????

Nope. This is about as close as I get to that game now. I went to the site earlier today to see how you guys faired. It's not like he won the division or anything.

I just got my team today. I'm having a hard time trying to switch 4-4-2 into 3-5-2. How do you switch them? I'm still fuzzy about the repositioning and the individual stuff. Can anyone recommend how to position the players to a 3-5-2? Should I have 3 central defenders or 1 central defender and the others toward the wings? Also, I have a real bad coach. Is it wise to fire him and get another this early?
I don't get the concept of training and having a training match for their specific position. Right now, I am doing goaltending training like Elwood recommended, but would the other positions' attributes suffer? Will they get some improvement because they played in a mtach or do I need to be training a specific thing for each of the different positions for them to improve?

"For training, I'd start with goalkeepers. They train up the fastest, and you can only train 2, so it's cheaper to get a full compliment of trainees"
What do you mean by "you can only train 2, so it's cheaper to get a full compliment of trainees"?
When you train goaltending, it won't improve everyone's goalkeeping? and what is a full compliment of trainees?
So, I should be training goaltending the entire season just for these guys? When exactly should I start to switch training?

Whoa, jd. Take a good hour or two and have a really good read of the rules. They are really detailed for hattrick and will outline how training works. then go to the communit pages under about hattrick and click on gameday magazine. they have two articles that give a really good synopsis of everything and tell beginners how to start.
I play a 3-5-2 by making one central defender a midfielder and leaving two wingbacks. but plenty of people who have been more successful managers than i have done it by removing a wingback.
You can only train one skill at a time. And in order for a player to improve in a skill, he has to play at that position that week. (i.e. only players that play as wingbacks or defenders benefit from training defending, and only players that play as inner midfielders or wingers benefit from playmaking training.) What elwood meant is that you can train two goalkeepers a week (one can play there in the league match and one in the cup/friendly match), so it is cheaper to have a full compliment of goalkeepers - two, rather than for defending, where you can train up to 10 defenders a week (if you play 5-4-1 in both games)
how bad is your coach? solid is the best coach there is. inadequate and passable are probably good starts.
seriously, go to gameday magazine and read it all. take some time. it took me six months to figure out that i hadn't read enough and was doing things all wrong.
good luck
