Anyway, the point of my posting was to ask about an unbalanced 3-5-2. If I'm vacating a wingback position, should I slide one (or more) players over in the defense, or just modify the winger (and possibly inner midfielder) on that side to defensive? If my best players are on defense (two solid central defenders vs. only one solid playmaker), do I sacrifice too much defense by switching to 3-5-2?
Brays Bayou FC, 4th in V.84, 2nd week playing (and I found out about this on the other board I frequent, not BigSoccer, interestingly enough).
Well, with 3 at the back, I'd recommend against moving a wing back up, and instead move up one center def.
Now I play 3-4-3, so not everything I'll say can directly apply to you, but here's the way I get 'balance'.
For defense, I have 2 brilliant defs and 1 outstanding (as well as a brilliant keeper). Neither of my WBs (one bril and the outstanding) have decent winger, so, basically, I have 3 players that are best suited for center defense. When you shift one CD up, the other CD doesn't totally move to the true center (he still only contributes to 1 wing defense), so I put a brilliant at one WB slot, directly next to him is the extra inner, then a brilliant def, and on the other WB slot is my outstanding. Both WBs are set on defensive.
With that, I generally get pretty even defense ratings. Of course with form, one side (or the center) could be slightly higher than the other, but usually they're all within 1 level of each other. If you look at my recent ratings, I also have 2 IMs with solid defense, and the 3rd has passable. As well as (up til recently) a defensive coach. I got a defensive coach midway through this season and was simply amazed at how much it seemed to help the ratings. Of course I don't have a solid right now, so will change coaches some til I get one, and I think (Hattrick is down at the moment) my current one is passable and offensive (I wanted to get a solid before training tonight, but couldn't spend the time due to errands, so stopped at a passable, planning to get back to it NOW, but HT isn't cooperating).
For a balanced offense (if you can call it that), in 343 I use only 1 winger, and due to that, have traditionally played my winger as towards middle (in reality, I've usually had a 4th inner on the wing TM, but that winger has always been my most expendable non-trainee starter, and I sold mine earlier this season to upgrade an IM, so have had weakish wingers the last 3-4 weeks - look for a match with Primi on the wing to see what I see as 'ideal'). But Primi had passable winger (weak passing, I think), and played TM, my wing attacks were also usually roughly equal (with a VERY strong central attack due to 3 forwards all getting trained).
I would think that unless your opponent's attack is remarkably better on 1 wing than the other, and it's predictable which side will have that strong attack (or if his central attack is really good), it would be better to aim for balance on defense. The last 2 seasons notwithstanding (for obvious reasons), that approach has worked for me, at least.
It's odd that this thread is slowish, but it's never been really fast. Don't know how many bigsoccer users make it to the games forum, though.

Yeah, it would be nice if this thread picked up a bit, but since Hattrick moves at a slowish pace, there isn't always a whole bunch to talk about. That, and there aren't too many Bigsoccer users on Hattrick.
Still waiting on training...
Anyone up for a friendly for this week?

OK, I've shifted to pulling my extra midfielder out of center defense.
New question - my opponent this week plays an unbalanced 3-5-2 (putting a wingback into center midfield), and it's consistently the left wingback. I'd like to take advantage of this by directing my attack to the right. Aside from setting my right winger offensive, what else should I do to press my advantage on the right?
(probably won't amount to anything, this game is at the second-place team in the league and I'm 4th only on the strength of the previous owner, and I'm seriously considering PICing with an eye toward trying to get points in the last game of the season, but I might get another chance to do this in the future.)

Some of the guys had been playing for a little while, it happened to catch my eye in a thread on European soccer, and we just had a bunch of people sign up. I think the current count is 20 or more, and right now our Hattrick discussion thread is active.

If you're certain he'll keep the same lineup, and you don't have much to worry about his attack on that same side, you could set a wing back offensive on that side, if you have a suitable player.
I don't think a left (or right) inner mid affects his side more than the other side, but perhaps check the rules on that one.

I'm pretty sure he'll keep the same lineup - I went back at least six matches, and he never wavered.

Woohoo! Pulled my first ever excellent, a 17 year old winger. I don't know what I should do with him, though... my wingers aren't that great, and I could use him for the next two games. There's also the question of how much I'd get for him on the transfer market at this point compared to week 1 of next season when people want to spend money. Hmm... dilemmas...

He have good side skills?
Also, if you're not training wingers, you'd most definitely be better off selling him, even though you'll get less now than if you pulled him 4 weeks ago, or 4 weeks from now.

Anyone ever have this for their supports club?

I find it interesting.
Won my game today, but found out why it is good to have a back up keeper as my starting one injuried his knee and is out for a game. had to promote a youth squad player for an emergancy.
I think it will be time to try to get as many friendlies as I can once the season ends. Plus it will be good to experiment with different formations.

Clinched my series today, and pretty much guarenteed auto-promotion... :)

I clinched first place too with a hard earned 4-2 win against 2nd.
I also put a passable playmaker up for sale for only $20,000 (13313161). Any takers?
I just have too many midfield players at solid to train this guy.

Dropped to 5th with a loss (as I expected would happen), but lost one of my three best players (a solid defender) for two weeks to injury... ugh... defense goes from a strength to patchwork for the critical final game (can avoid a relegation qualifier with a win and 4th place team draw or loss). At least I'm relatively safe from the automatic slots -- I've got a substantial GD advantage on the #7 team, and best they can do is tie me on points.

Well,I just started playing the game, and the team I was given was in dead last, so I'll be getting the drop this season. At least I'll have time to rebuild, and I have at least some money to do it with.

I'm in fifth right now and play the 2nd to worst team in the league next week. Hopefully I can get the win there and find a way to rebuild for next season.

With a 4-0 victory over Streamwood United FC, I clinched my 2nd consecutive II.1 title......and my 4th straight series championship (the other 2 were from III.1).
Now, with auto-promotion to the Major League within my grasp, let's see if can actually do it.

You better hope for auto-promotion. If you play Minute Men in a qualifier it could be ugly. AYSA wouldn't be bad though. I'm 2 points up in my series with the 2&3 teams playing each other the last week. The bad thing is that I'm going to have to play one of the best demoting teams again if I win the series.

tied a game I should have won (had 66 and 73% possession, only had two listed chances), and I'm now 2 points behind 2nd and I play against him away to end the season. And my 17 year old excellent winger is selling for a lot of money, so I'm out of debt. Now I can bid on players again. Woohoo!
