Do you think ESPN commentator Tommy Smith is amazing or just plain annoying?

Personally I find him to be annoying in that he is seems to be extremely pesemistic especially when he was co-commentator for the first few games of the Euro Cup this last summer...

annoying, end of discussion. Anyone who likes him is either a manure fan or knows nothing about the game

there has been many forums about annoying commentators, all I can say is I don't think anyone can say Tommy Symth is amazing I think sometimes he blind and never excepts when he is wrong but all up I do think he gets criticised unfairly. ESPN has worse color commentators than Tommy Symth.

Amazing. Listening to his commentary makes me feel like an expert, it also gives me hope I could one day be a commentator. His good for a bit of comedy, if the games a bit shit at least he'll give you something to laugh at.

First of all, if you feel like an expert listening to him, then you really need to listen to other guys. He is by far the worst commentator on ESPN. Not the worst analyst though.

How is Tommy Symth by far the worst commentator ESPN has?

His point is that Smyth is so bad that it makes him feel like an expert.

It's Smyth.

I think he's one of the best English language announcers around.

now if you compare that with that other clip I posted earlier involving that twat in Shep Messing how can you complain about Tommy Smyth I admit Derek Rae along side does help but I think Shep is ESPN worse commentator by far

True Story straight from Big Soccer:

A few years back there was a question somewhere on these boards put to FSR's JSL about pronunciations and he made reference to the fact that Tommy Smyth said a name one way, and everyone else said it correctly. Well Smyth got wind of it and instead of contacting JSL directly, he went to his boss (a fellow Scotsman) who reprimanded JSL for questioning his friend Smyth period. Part of the reason why JSL doesn't post on here anymore. And if I remember the story right, the email Smyth sent called JSL some not so nice names.

So JSL wrote Smyth back in the interest of hearing what he had to say - and never heard from him. Guess Mr.Smyth is too big to email him back - but small enough to contact his boss and whine about being questioned on a BS board.

Now I heard this story from a friend of a friend so JSL, if you're kicking around and want to clarify/refute please feel free.

And since we now KNOW Tommy Smyth is around these boards (or has someone who is) we also know that not only are you annoying Tommy, you're a gutless terd as well.

Worst footie analyst period. I'd rather listen to Ray Hudson....And I HATE Ray Hudson.

I don't like him at all but I have to say I think Shep Messing is worse.

And I literally cannot watch anything with Ray Hudson commentating. It's too bad b/c GolTV has some nice games.

Whose fellow? Because Smyth is Irish.

Haha, the comments are hilarious on both sides but I think Tommy Smyth is a useful commentator. I think if you take him for what he is (comic-relief, someone to rachet up the enthusiasm in a room full of rather boring characters) then he's enjoyable. If you expect some biblical knowledge or deep-seated insight then hell yes he's annoying. Personally I just enjoy his over-the-top 'BULGE THE AULD ONION BAG' and try not focus on the brightness of his head.:D

Tolerable as a commentator, annoying as an analyst when he forgets to take his chill pill, which is to often.

He is neither amazing or annoying. He is average, much like the majority of the announcers we discuss.

I know the middle road doesnt exist here on BigSoccer where everyone is either fantastic or awful...

He passed his "Sale By Date" a couple of years ago...
