And he is available for our carling cup tie...if he can somehow recover from his 'illness'.

Welcome back Jermain - hope you brought your scoring boots with you.
Safe to say he won't be our penalty taker (especially vs. West Ham)

I can finally pimp my defoe kit again :) I'm glad he came back. I've always liked him as a player and I'm looking forward in helping us add some much needed firepower. I'm very hopeful he can come through for us this 2nd half of the season.

I still don't know exactly how beneficial Defoe is to our current strike force. The price is also a little over the top. I understand with all the conditions and such we're actually only going to be paying around 10 million cash for him, but Podolski was only priced at 10 million.

We sold him for 7.5, right? mismanagement is a bitch.

Uncle Harry knows how to play him, just look at how he started scoring when he went to Portsmouth. Podolski may seems a bargain at 10 million but can he adapt to the EPL? Adding to that, he is more of a international player. He is pretty poor at club level.

Surely he is already cup-tied for the Carling Cup?
Also WRT Podolski ... I rather imagine his wage demands (if he had even agreed to come to WHL) would have been much higher than Defoe's. Even if he were to come for only 10M (which I doubt given the present exchange rates ... and his decided preference to go back to FC Köln) ... his wage demands would probably result in a total cost that was higher than Defoe's over a 3 year contract.
Defoe should partner decently with Pavlyuchenko, provided they can get enough service from Bentley, Modric, Huddlestone, Lennon and Co. Defoe is more comfortable in a partnership than Bent and is enough of a poacher to benefit from Pavlyuchenko's aerial game (though he needs to do a better job holding the ball).
Bent will still be a great option to have when Spurs need to manage a lead and he is always an X-factor in matches where the midfield is struggling to assert itself and forwards like Defoe get isolated and struggle to get the service they thrive on.

No. He was named as an unused sub in the game against Chelsea. He will be cup-tied for the UEFA cup though.

Well in all fairness had we not sold him then we were staring down the barrel of a Bosman Free with nothing to show for it, so I can't really call that mismanagement. I don't think Defoe is worth £15M personally, but at least the Chairman is backing his Manager with who he wants, even if it does leave some egg on the Chairman's face. :D
Welcome back nibbler!

fair enough. I did not realize the fullness of the situation. I as well am glad to see the manager and chairman on the same page again. hopefully that will prevent situations such as this (our current lopsided roster) from occurring again.

Good player, but I was hoping for a second true target man, as opposed to another little guy... What's the point of having wide players to swing in the crosses, if all we've got are midgets for forwards and attacking midfielders?

Spurs sold him for £9.5m. But take into account the £4.5m Pompey still owed for him, the £5m owed for Kaboul, the £2m owed for Pedro Mendes, plus (get this!), the sell-on fee inserted into the deal that took Defoe to Pompey in the first place....... Did pompey pay us money back?!!?
Spurs must've paid peanuts, despite what the papers are saying!
Welcome back Defoe. His goal per game ratio at Spurs, where he didn't feature much, was 1 in 3. His goal per game ration at Pompey was 1 in 2.
Provided he gets playing time, i can envisage a 'Clive Allen'-style goal craziness.

Infoabout the deal.
Tottenham get Jermain Defoe for just £9m
After a week of negotiations, a breakthrough was reached on Tuesday when it was agreed to factor in the remaining £6m of instalments that Portsmouth owed Tottenham following Defoe’s move to Fratton Park last January as well as a £4m sell-on clause which was due to Spurs from that transfer.

9 million for a proven goal scorer, english international and a signing from a fellow BPL club is a bargain.

IMO his preference to go back to Cologne contradicts your speculations. Why would he even consider making such a move if money was among his top priorities?

Yaaaa, welcome back JD. The deal has my seal of approval. tbh, JD could have cost a third more.

I think there's no question Podolski's priority is to play regularly and to feel valued again. not earning a big salary.
Now we have Defoe I suppose Podolski is off the menu, unless the club sells Bent to Villa as has been mooted.

As Lee Corso would say... NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND
Jermain Defoe's return to Tottenham Hotspur has yet to be finalised and reports suggest that not only has a fee yet to agreed with Portsmouth but the deal could also come under close scrutiny for a possible breach of transfer rules.
