"Unfortunately Xabi has had seven stitches in his instep," he said after the game.

"We do not know the full extent of the injury, apart from the fact he will be very sore tonight.

"Hopefully there will be no damage but we won't know for the next 24 or 48 hours."

Thought this needed it's own thread, rather than just sticking this in the news thread.

I doubt he will be able to play the next match, but hopefully it's not worse than that.

A long-term injury would really put a damper on Xabi's excellent season so far. I hope he gets well soon.

Good idea. I think and hope that it is more of an impact injury rather than a soft tissue tear.

Your instep is the inner side of your foot. Basically the arch of your foot. Surely you understand your own body

The injury was right at the end of the 1st half...it was fairly clear, Xabi went in to win the ball and never got up.

I only saw one incident -- he was fouled, went down, got up, played the rest of the half, then at HT while the team was walking off the pitch, he couldn't, and required medical attention, then he gingerly rose to his feet for the training room and emerged at the start of the second half with a giant boot, then the next day I wrote this run on sentence.

Actually, the instep in some soccer circles in the top of your foot - which would make sense to get stamped on and cut the top of your foot.

there is a Marca story linked on RAWK that says no break, just the stitches (that we knew about) - and says he could be back for Stoke (though I imagine they'd hold him out).

anyway - it's possible sometimes as these Spanish papers seem to have an iside track to our own players sometimes.

if this report is true - then that's really good news for us.

I'm sure that a family friend or friend of the agent would leak info before we did. The club wouldn't want to report wrong info, and Rafa wouldn't want to tip his hand for any fixture. So, I'd be inclined to believe Marca on this.

The boot was probably a preventative measure to bruising, swelling, and the possibility of busting stitches.

Well, if he misses only Stoke, no big deal, Lucas and/or Masch can hold the midfield.

When Xabi plays and plays well, we're a great team. With Mascherano's average form so far, I wouldn't be inclined to say everything is OK with Xabi gone.

He might be in average form overall for the season but lets not forget that he participated in the Olympics also this season and then came straight back into the 1st XI without a rest due to Stevie's injury.

Over the last few matches he has been getting better and this season he has shown more composure with the ball in keeping possession, keeping the ball circulating around the field and has also chimed in with some key indirect assists (the pass that led to the direct assist).

Its probably just the high standards that everyone has come to expect from Masch that help form this opinion of his average form. He has been very good this season IMO, especially in the big games vs Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and other important games. Lets not forget those massive efforts that he has put in.

Quite honestly I am not sure I want Xabi out there against Stoke anyway. If he didn't have a broken foot before, they are just the type of team to ensure he has one after. Plus he would probably end up with a bunch of knocks on the noggin too.

Xabi's been the subject of what, four red cards this season? Three of them were straight reds, I believe. He's been incredibly durable, all things considered, and I hope he comes back soon because we're on a different level when Xabi is spraying the ball around the pitch.

I don't mind seeing Lucas at all, however, because he's been very good lately - seems to have found his sea legs a bit.

Lucas has been so much more commanding with the ball this season. It definitely seems as if his field vision is improving and he is much more positive with his passing. He really is beginning to give us more of a dynamic option in addition to his solid positional play. This is a big reason why (I think) that StevieG is performing so well in a more advanced role ... a few years ago ... the midfield of Momo and Xabi was not a good enough playmaking tandem to allow StevieG to play as advanced as he is know (so he had to play on the right side where he had more of the ball through midfield). Now our wide midfielders and tandems like Lucas/Masch or Lucas/Alonso provide good enough service that Gerrard is not wasted playing more as a true forward.

You are also correct about the attention that Xabi has been drawing. Many commentators like to disparage the style of football that LFC plays relative to other Big 4 teams, but the fact remains that we have really improved the quality and range of possession this season. It is not a workmanlike midfield anymore ... Xabi's resurgence is a big part of this.

Teams are getting tired of our midfield spreading play so much and tend to get a bit unhinged ... Xabi is often the unfortunate recipient of this attention, as he is doing a great job pulling the strings patiently. He is great at shielding the ball just enough or getting into a 51%-49% challenge just ahead of an opponent or delaying his pass until an opponent is totally committed ...

This is not only evident in the red cards he has been 'drawing', but also in plays like the unfortunate challenge with Fabregas.

My favorite part of Xabi's game is those 60 yard passes that float over a backpedalling defender onto the foot of Kuyt and Riera.

No doubt. Those passes are so good that guys like Kuyt and Babel have plenty of time to control them and get their heads up, on those occasions when their first touch isn't quite up to standard. Xabi is back to pinging them around to be sure.

Good news (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1107283/Liverpool-relief-midfielder-Xabi-Alonsos-injury-clear.html?ITO=1490)
Liverpool's £10.5million signing from Real Sociedad, a huge favourite with fans, has extensive bruising near the cut that needed seven stitches but was able to do some running at the club's Melwood training ground after being given the all-clear by medical staff.

He is a doubt for the trip to Stoke on Saturday but, crucially, will be fit for the two Anfield derbies with Everton - in the Barclays Premier League and FA Cup fourth round - and next month's Champions League last-16 tie with Real Madrid.

The biggest improvement in Xabi's game this year is probably his ability to speed up the tempo of our play.

Our speed of play is soooo much quicker this year. Thank you, Sammy Lee. Thank you, Xabi Alonso. :)
