Well with reports of Clint Mathis on trial, some interest in Carlos Bocanegra, and of course Steve Cherundolo already there... they needed a thread to discuss the club.
So post away.

It's too early for a prediction to me, since it's not clear yet if and who they sign. But i'd think they improve compared to the first half of the season, if only because Stajner will come out stronger, like last year the same time and Schröter will probably be playing instead of Cherundolo (sorry, but he has been a major weekness on defense). Schröter only had one game so far (against Bochum after recovering from injury) and although he conceded a goal, it looked like a good beginning.
Mathis would be helpful, but of course now i'm contagioned by the Mathis-fans here. ;-)

Is Schroter a newly signed player? Is he coming from Cottbus?
Why didn’t Stefulj get a chance to start?

Yes, Schroeter is from Cottbus. He was signed in the summer, but he had a knee-injury and did not recover before December.
He's listed as midfielder, but played right defender in Cottbus as well. He's 23 and talented. He did well in the last game of the first half against Bochum, but then missed one ball on which Bochum scored. (After that, Cherundolo was taken in for him, but was also involved in a goal for Bochum.)
Stefulj actually did start against Cologne, Stuttgart (right defender) and Bremen (midfield), but it looks like he doesn't really have a future in Hanover anymore. (Just like Zuraw and maybe Diouf.) He does have an okay performance once in a while, like in Stuttgart, but it's probably not enough. I assume that Schröter will play right defender and Cherundolo will do the backup. And i still hope that Cherundolo improves, because after all he's a good player, just too many mistakes in defending.

At the moment we are also testing Polish defender Marcin Kus and another candidate for our shaky defense is German international Ingo Hertzsch from Leverkusen. In contrast to the more sophisticated Kus, Hertzsch is mainly a robust destroyer type.
But we are content with every player who helps us to concede less goals than in the last two years and especially in the first half of this season because at times the Bundesliga seems to be too fast for the likes of Konstantinidis, Vinicius, Zuraw, Schuler and Stefulj. Central-back Per Mertesacker gives hope for the future, but he has played only one halftime so far at pro-level - on the wrong position. Defensive midfielder Christoph Dabrowski works very hard, but loses too many balls. Young Canadian Julian de Guzman (central defensive midfielder or left-back) on the one hand sometimes shows glimpses of international class or more, on the other hand he suffers from inconsistency, and his team-mates too often leave him alone. Playmaker Krupnikovic lacks quickness and fighting-spirit. And Kleber is rather a left-forward than a defender. Our wingers Stendel, Brdaric, Stendel and Stajner (if he wants) are industrious, regaining many balls, but often in vain. To top it all, left-winger Mohammadou Idirissou - very fast, a top-athlete and a fantastic fighter - unfortunately has fallen out of favour with coach Ralf Rangnick. So we need somebody, no matter whom, to stabilize our defense.

Actually I don't think that 96 solves the defence problems by just replacing Cherundolo or somebody else in there. I watched Rangnick's defence system already in Ulm and there are some general problems going along with it. Don't get me wrong, Rangnick is a good coach, I love his offence style (next to Hannover there are only Leverkusen, Bremen and Wolfsburg playing attractive soccer in Bundesliga, so there's already lots of applause for this reason). His defence is moving way too much according to the situation though - the backers suddenly find themselves in air duels against the opponents' centers and you can imagine how this ends if a small guy like Cherundolo meets the opponents' center (Real would also allow twenty goals more per season if their system would force Roberto Carlos to be in air duels against the opponents' center...)
Basically Cherundolo has a good understanding of the right backer position, sometimes he's caught off position (especially during Hannover's offence movement). A guy like Schröter will have less problems in uncommom situations in the defence, but he is no typical backer and will get many problems against skilled guys like Ze Roberto (which are opponents, who are made for Cherundolo - almost always looks good against them). Cherundolo is having good offence skills as well though - could play right mid without problems; my impression sometimes is that he's worried too much with the defensive problems that might occur, so he's losing his offence qualities because of that. But we'll see, I think Cherundolo will start after the break and then his performances will decide whether or not he keeps the spot.

I’ve read that you might be selling Stajner. Why? Who would replace him?
KrimsonTide

Stajner never lived up to the expectations in Hanover. He's an extraordinarily gifted player, but somehow he played way to inconsistent. It is assumed, that he suffers from a kind of homesickness, that he would do better in Tschechien (what's that in english, dammit).
96 will only sell him if the transfer fee (allocation?) is right, though. They would then look for a proper replacement. Right now they're talking about Tomislav Maric from Wolfsburg.

You know, I love the Google translation of Hanover 96's website...especially the part that translates the text about the signing of Clint Mathis, it reads:
"It is perfect! The US American Clint Mathis signed a contract today in the context of the press conference in castle whisks with the red ones."
"The 38fache American national players receives the leotard with the number 44."
"Matthis has its qualities particularly on the Spielmacherposition, is very torgefaehrlich and can also in foremost front be Inge-set."
HAHAHA, funny stuff.

The Czech Republic, thx. Yes, they have a great national team, played awesome soccer in the qualification. I'm really looking forward to the match against them, it "has all the hallmarks of a classic" ;-).

Hanover announces the second transfer for the winterbreak. Jaime is back! On loan from La Coruna. This is good news indeed, he was the first choice for the badly needed reinforcement for defensive midfield.
He already played with Hanover last season and with his experience, his technical skills and his fighting spirit he was quite important for the team and most likely will be again.
So, we're ready to roll over Hamburg on Sunday! And even if this shouldn't work out, i think Hanover will play a good role in the second half of the season.

Where can I buy a 96 jersey?

the only way to buy one is to buy it in a shop in germany or through the online shop, but that only is for germany, too :-(
maybe you can send an email to hannover 96 or Uhlsport or you try to find other americans wanting a jersey and somebody in germany to buy them for you and then bring them to you or send them. I would do next time I come to the US, but that would be christmas this year ;-)

For a 60,00 EUR Adult Jersey, the shipping to the U.S. is 72,67 EUR ! ! ! ! ! More for shipping than for the jersey itself!
I've ordered stuff from S.C. Freiburg (my favorite team) and the shipping isn't that high. It's only 25 EUR shipping for a jersey from them. So I don't know why it's so high with Hannover 96.
Your better bet is to find some place like Subside.co.uk to order it.

I don't think it would be a problem for me to ship that jersey for somebody who wants. I will ship birthday and valentine's day presents to my GF who lives in Athol, MA, so I can at least tell you how much that would be for one jersey (25-30€ sounds apropriate)

That's outrageous! I really hope they cut down on that.

Yeah, it's even worse than ordering MLS garb from MLSgear.com
