I am talking about numbers in different team that had special meaning. For example, #10 for Brazil, #10 for Argentina or #7 for Manchester United.
And why are they special?

Can't pretend that I know precisely why a certain country or team attaches importance to a shirt number. But it is true to say that generally that shirt must have been worn by a leading player before.
Worldwide the NO. 10 shirt is won by a few select individuals who are considered to play pivotal roles in the team. The brains in the team. This was generally the case in the past but this is not always the case and it was not always the case.
The No. 10 is always associated with greatness. Pele,Maradona,di Stefano?Eusebio,Rivelino,Zico,Kempes,Gullit,Baggio,Rai,Francescolli,Cubillas,Rivera,Matthaeus,Hassler to mention a few wore it with aplomb.
Today we have Rivaldo in Brasil and the heir apparent is Ronaldinho of course,Ortega(2002) for Argentina and I believe either Aimar or D'alessandro will inherit it soon,Totti for Italy(wrenched it from the serial choker Del Piero), Zidane(France)Rui Costa(Portugal),Okocha(Nigeria)etc.
Johan Cryuff though was the lead actor in the Dutch Total Football ensemble but wore a 14.For England the No. 10 does not seem to hold that much importance.
I remember that in his early days at Man U Beckham donned a 10 but was subsequently given a 7 coz I guess it holds a special significance to the team Man U...given that Best and Cantona wore it before.

Once every number was linked to a certain position.
A number 10 I believe is in a more or less free role behind the strikers. Not sure though.

'Captain Marvel' Bryan Robson, who was Beckham's favourite player as a kid also wore #7 as United (& England) captain.

#7 at Manchester United is the shirt consistantly worn by their most inspiring, crafty, game winning players. That's not to say they have not had other great players in other shirts, but at United they are known as the magnificent 7's.
There is a dvd/video out by that title, about these players. Watch it sometime and you'll understand.

The first World Cup that I watched (when I was a kid) were 1986 & 1990 and for some reason I always thought that #11 was just as cool as #10. And today, I would rather have #11 than #10. I think because 10 is used way too much.

I was thinking of the historical importance of the number to a particilar team.... when a player inherits that number, it is his duty to fill the shoes left the old player.
For example, Brazil once upon a time produced a #10 in Pele.... all other Brazilian who wore that number must carry a weight on his shoulder... or simply an honor. The fans will say he ain't worlthy of the number if he failed to perform. Argentina has similiar story with their number 10.
When I mentioned MU #7, I was also thinking of Best, Charlton, Matthews(not sure), Cantona and Robson who also left a mark in MU history.
I am now thinking of whether any other team has similiar special number.
I knew about Cruffy's number 14 has a special place in Holland history, but no one really inherited from him to carry the tradition. Beckenbauer's sweeper position was once upon a time an important shoe to fill, but his number is not so important.

Just to clear a couple of things up, Stanley Mathews (I presume that is the Matthews you are referring to) never played for Manchester United. Bobby Charlton didn't wear the number 7, he wore 8 or 9 usually, and Best would often wear number 11.
Also I'm pretty sure that Di Stefano wore no. 7, which is why it is important at Real, or at least is at the moment.
Personally I prefer no. 14, as it was the number of Cruyff and my own hero David Ginola.

In the old days, 1 was the keeper. 2 through 5 were defenders. 6 through 9 were midfielders. And 10 and 11 were forwards.
Simple as that.

I thought Di Stefano wore #23.... that was why Beckham chose 23.... most people thought #23 is Michael jordan's number.
