Name famous players whether they are still with the French League or not. Just wanted to see which players have played in Ligue 1 and for which club...this might help me link myself to a club.

Thanks.

Players who are either playing somewhere else or still in Ligue 1.

Thanks again.

Ligue 1 is only 2 years old, so the legends you're looking for are few. Hell, the ones you'd consider calling legends are still works in the progress when you consider the likes of Djibril Cisse, Sydney Govou, Shabboni Nonda and a few others.

Now if you open this up to the old Division 1 then you damn well better start with Michel Platini, one of the best to ever play the game period and he's included in the top 11 of all time. If this is the case then you would also include, Just Fontaine -- Record holder for most goals scored in a World Cup, I'd toss in Eric "the madman" Cantona -- yes he was banned from Div 1 and didn't become one of France's best players 'til he played abroad in England and I'd also include Zizou and Henry. This is just for starters.

Valderrama, the guy with the funky hair in MLS played for Nantes a while ago.

U.S. players you might know:
Greg Vanney plays for Bastia and Joe Cannon is at Lens.

Others from l'OM:
Jean-Pierre Papin ,Chris Waddle, Ruddy Voller, Allen Boksic.

Whoops, I think Sidspaceman is right, El Pibe played for Montpellier.

I also forgot about Abedi Pele of l'OM, he was African player of the year 3 years in a row in the early 90's.

I'd add Carlos Bianchi to the legends list he led the league in scoring 5 out of 6 years while playing for Rimes and PSG.

When did Vanney and Cannon become Famous players? I like them both but to compare them with the aformentioned is ridiculous. Someone mentioned Henry but not Trezeguat? They both became SupaStars while playing on the same Monaco side.

I never said they were famous or legends, they came to mind because I thought Catfish would be interested in Americans playing in France.

a list kind of like:

Henry=Monaco
Trezeguet=Monaco
Barthez=Marseille

and you fill in more good players from around the world.

Thank you very much.

P.S. Lyon vs. Monaco this Saturday...i'm so psyched! My first Ligue 1 match...this will bring me one step closer to choosing my French club.

Vive la France! lol.

I know he's not a legend but whatever happened to Patrice Loko, formerly of PSG?

In 1996 I went to two PSG games and a Les Bleus v. Portugal friendly. If I recall correctly, Patrice Loko was a pretty big player for PSG and also played with the National Team. Am I right? And whatever happened to him, he seemed to have a promising career ahead of him (I didn't think he was too old.)

Any info would be appreciated.

Merci.

He's playing for L'Orient in Ligue 2. They're currently in 3rd place. Apparently, the word is that a few years back, his son died at birth and he had a hard time adjusting for a year or so and was moved from PSG to L'Orient then back to PSG then Montpellier. He's 33 right now and you're right he was one of the future stars of France. Actually was a part of the magnificent Nantes youth sytsem. He came up with Djorkaeff and Karembou within Nante's youth system which is considered to be one of the best in France as well as Europe. However, Nantes seems to produce them then sell for a profit which is why it's been awhile since they've been a top club in Le Championnat and now Ligue 1.

Enzo Francescolli played for Marseille as well and was Uruguay's leading light during his era...

There were other greats such as Giresse,Tresor,Dominique Rocheteau,Manuel Amoros who starred for the French National team in the '80s.
