As far as anything I've seen, this takes the cake. As far as worst I've seen in person...two come to mind:

1) Saw a kid's leg get shattered, bone broke in two pieces and one of them exited the skin, downright nasty. He got slammed into the goal post on a corner kick and that caused the break.

2) Was playing indoor and say a guy's elbow hit a seam on the wall, huge wound opened and it exposed the bone. He just wrapped a t-shirt around it and kept playing. He need like 25-30 stitches later.

Btw, now that I think about it, I doubt if anyone could 'top' the injury Alex Zanardi suffered last year when he was hit broadside by another car (going 180 mph) and literally cut in half. The emergency crew had to crawl to him there was so much blood on the track ...

Once, my little brothers sweeper was tackled and fell with a bad angle. It was a total compound fracture - bare bone a whole lotta yelling.

In comp league, one of my teammates went to flick the ball backwards with his head. Another player who had gone up to compete with him actually jumped higher and subsequently got the flick motion from my friends head and it broke his nose. The brake was so bad it actually pushed the kids bone or cartlidge up into his head and he seizured on the field.

One stands out because of its gruesomeness...

When I was in high school playing "pointy" football, I tackled a guy driving my shoulder straight through his thighs wrapping up his knees and planting him on his back -- picture perfect tackle.

It shattered his thigh (his Dad was my doctor and he said the thigh was in 23 pieces) and his muscle started spasming -- his leg was flopping all over.

Another because it just happened last night...

I was refereeing a girls JV high school game. An attacker was going through the defense and as she was coming across the 18 the keeper started to come out. The ball got away from the attacker and so she wound up sliding into it at about the 8 or 10 yard spot. The keeper coming out did the same thing. Shin on shin contact. The attacker broker her leg. It was bowed backwards and you could see the edges of the bone under her skin where it was offset to the side somewhat.

Oh, just thought of another...

My son's U16 team this last spring -- in the Michigan State Cup championship game. A ball comes in crossed from near the end line to about 8 yards line out from end line toward the far post. My son (a defender) and an attacker are both stride for stride coming into the area. The keeper starts coming out to smother the ball. All three collide.

My son's legs collided with our keeper's legs -- he only wound up with a bruised knee out of it. The attacker's knee collided with our keeper's face. His knee took 6 stitches for the cut (from teeth).

The keeper was a little less fortunate -- all the front teeth were pushed back. Serious blood everywhere. They thought he had a broken or dislocated jaw. It turned out that jaw was ok -- they had to do surgery to pull all teeth back into place and wired them in. It took 120 stitches inside his mouth and 40 on the outside.

VERY scary, but turned out ok. Just over a month later, he played for the ODP state team in the regional camp and made the ODP Regional pool this year.

Note that the front of Zanardi's car -- where his legs were -- has been vaporized.

When I was in high school, I went up for a head ball at the same time as this other guy. He took my legs out and I landed directly on my shoulder. My shoulder was fine, but the whiplash caused one of my vertebrae to dislocate. I walked around for about a week and a half with my neck going like this:

It was actually a lot weirder than it sounds.

Man, I had forgotten about that hockey goalie getting his throat slit. That beats the Heisman thing hands down.

Then, my opponent was so mad that he upended the chess board. In attempting to catch the pieces before they scattered on the floor, I banged my head, once again on the table. Boy, did it smart!
In junior chess these days helmets are mandatory. I’m just surprised they didn’t make you wear one during a tournament…
Can’t be too careful in any contact sport.…;)

Well... I was arm wrestling this guy and his arm broke right above his elbow. His humurous(sp) was totally broken. I had to take him to the hospital. The sound it made will haunt me for the rest of my life, and the feel of it was even worse. I thought the table had broken or something, because it sounded like wood breaking. I don't arm wrestle much any more.

As far as soccer goes, I got my nose broken playing against Busch and the bone was sticking out, kind of like in Raging Bull. I pushed it back in, but I was bleeding so I had to leave the game. Then it started to hurt really bad. I got five stitches in my nose, to close the hole.

This other time I went for a diving header and the goalie tried to take me out. He tackled me, and I missed the goal, hitting the outside of the net, but his face hit me in the hip, right on the bone, and I was at pretty much full pace. His face was totally wrecked, and he was just laying there not moving with his hands over his face. Blood started seeping through his fingers, and the guys on his team came after me, even though HE tried to take me out. I had made a perfect near post run, and the cross was timed well. If he hadn't taken me out I would have scored for sure. I just backed away, and when they saw he was hurt really bad, they forgot about being tough. I felt really bad, but it wasn't my fault. The ambulance came and they rushed him away. I don't know what happened to him exactly, but I saw that his face was pretty much crushed. I don't remember ever seeing him playing again.

I have seen several people break both bones in their legs, as well as a femur. Soccer is definitely a rough sport, especially in the US.

I myself have probably broken about 12 bones, but not all playing soccer.

I forgot about the worst thing I ever saw. I was about eight, and I was a speedskater. At an indoor meet, this guy fell and another guy stepped right onto his back. It was seriously laid open like he had been attacked my a machete...from hip to shoulder. There was an increidible amount of blood on the ice. He almost died of blood loss. He had about fifty staples put into his back to close it, and he looked like a Frankenstein monster. He kept skating after he healed though.

My friend's finger also got cut off at a practice. We couldn't find it for a while...it was in his glove, which he had thrown on the ice.

While playing high school soccer a player on our team tried to challenge a high cross into the opposing teams box. The goalie on the other team jumped and caught the ball and on the way down landed on my teamates extended leg. Anyways he broke his leg in 5 different spots including 2 clean breaks, ripped most of his tendons in his leg and ankle. After 6 operations and 3 years later, he still can't put any pressure on it and will never be able to play sports again. I was right there and have never seen anything as freaky as that.

I remember the Malarchuk story. Trainers said he had about 30 seconds to live unles they taped it up righ then and there on the ice.

Don't know if any of you saw Ronaldo's second injury during his comeback game after eight months without playing.

He'd been on the field for a few minutes and in his first play he rushes toward the goal, makes a drible and his knee literally exploded, without anybody touching him. You could see bones and flesh sticking out. Gross.

The first one I thought of was the Napolean McCallum's knee injury on Monday night football. I can't believe it's only been mentioned by one other person. His leg bent completely backwards at the knee... yeesh.

I couldn't find a picture of it, but I did find a follow up article:

mine's not nearly as bad as some of those you all have described, but it was quite painful nonetheless. senior year of high school, i was playing pointyball in a friend's backyard. a friend dove to tackle me and managed to plant his forehead on my kneecap. i felt it slide right out of the socket. i was lying there with my leg locked in a 90 degree angle with my patella on the side of my leg. one of the guy's younger brothers took one look and literally passed out next to me. the worst part was when the doctor was putting it back in place in the er. i could feel it sliding over my other bones. it must've taken him two or three pushes (slow, hard pushes) to get it in. oh well, at least i got a good does of morphine for my troubles.;)

I remember watching a superbowl, I can't even remember which one, where a guy's ankle got totally snapped, and they showed the slo-mo replay and it was flopping around grotesquely.
