Why is PSG only from 1970?

I dont think many of the French clubs are very old. football was a late bloomer in France. From what I gather, Rugby was the main sport until the modern(1930's-) era.

BTW, I got this info from the 2001-2002 Soccer Yearbook by David Goldblatt, for those that get offended by incorrect information

PSG is the result of a merger between two clubs (Saint-Germain-en-Laye and FC Paris I believe.)

Paris used to have a big club - Stade de Reims - 1956 & 59 Euro Champions Cup Finalist. They lost both finals to the Real Madrid team, which took the first 5 Cups. They currently toil in the French 3rd Divison with the likes of Cannes, etc. Not really sure how a mighty club like that has fallen. I'm sure no other Euro Champions' Cup finalist is in such dire state. If someone can fill us in on this historic fall from grace, please do.

They do. Red Star 93 established in 1897. They have had various name changes over the years. I think they are in the 4th or 5th division now.

red star is in 5th division now afaik, they were in 4th division but got thrown to 5th division by DNCG because of economic problems

It actually springs from the "berceau royale," or royal cradle, springing from a blazon/coat of arms representing the royal town of Saint-Germain en laye ("royal" because somebody royal livedthere regularly).

A blazon is the actual written description of a coat of arms, a royal one of which the above town claimed as early as 1638.

From the website (http://www.ville-st-germain-en-laye.fr/en/index.html), where, if you look in the upper-right corner, you will see the royal blazon/coat:

...Many old documents referring to the city of Saint-Germain-en-Laye are stamped with the 3-fleur-de-lis royal seal bearing the arms of France. This "signature" identifies Saint-Germain as a royal city, first of all because it was part of the royal domain, and secondly, because it served as a residence for the royal family.

• As early as the period of the "Restoration" of the Bourbons, the city had wanted to use the seal bearing the arms of France (and of Navarre), arguing that it was justified in doing so because of Saint-Germain-en-Laye's past and its status as a royal city. Unfortunately, the city was unable to substantiate its claim at the time.
On August 11, 1816, the Ministry of Justice proposed a blazon. Thanks to a letter patent dated August 17, 1820, King Louis XVIII granted the city a blazon bearing a cradle and the date September 5, 1638, in honour of the birth date of his grandfather, Louis XIV.

Thus, PSG's logo, the evolution of which you can find here (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/ammar/Paristorique/palmares/logos.htm), has since about 1991 reflected "Paris" in its employment of the Eiffel Tower, and "Saint-Germain" in its use of the berceau royale, as reflected in a blazon/coat of arms for the town of Saint-Germain de laye.

Oh, and although many websites will state the date of the founding of PSG as 27 August 1970, that is wrong. That date is when PSG was acknowledged by the FFF. PSG was founded on 12 August 1970, the day before I was born.

Shame that Red Star is playing that low in the leagues It would be the benefit for french football with more teams from Paris as in England.

Stade de Reims are they a parisian team? aren't they from Reims.

By the way have always wondered why french clubs had such wierd clubcrests. Le Havre onve had the worst crest i Ever have seen. It looked as a drawing were a ball come up from the sea.

I like most of the French clubcrests. I think collectively they are among the best in Europe, certainly better than Germany were a lot of clubs have bland, boring ones.

Thats because you are french. The french club crest in design are different thinking and special, but the design are like french industrial design and music, not simple and easy enough.... I fing them untructured. I somehow can understand why you think german crest are ugly I do so also, but seem as logos German crests are easy to remember and simple, just what needs for an football crest. I do not see a football crest as just a crest for a team more a way to brand theyre product.

Seen from that point of view Dutch crest are the best though......

The PSG logo is elegant in its simplicity. I find many German logos simple but lacking any fantasy or elegance at all...much like the football, ;)
