FYI,
one reason that that happened is that the US put a ban on sell of army equipment to Venezuela.
Venezuela needed to fix its F-16, tried to buy some from Spain, and the US blocked it because the Spanish planes "have american technology in it"

Venezuela then had to go to Russia to buy army related equipment.

It's the same as if I push you and then say that you are stupid because you can't stand on your own feet.

I understand, and actually agree with Chavez with that but, he opposes imperialism so much yet one could make a great argument that Russia is very imperialistic too, just not as much as U.S.A. I say be neutral with both and just start commerce with both.

Velasco señaló que economía chilena está afrontando bien la crisis internacional

El ministro destacó que el país no tiene deudas.

Además, anunció que la próxima semana presentará el Presupuesto 2009.

La situación chilena es muy diferente a la de la crisis del 80 o la asiática, dijo el secretario de Estado.

El ministro de Hacienda, Andrés Velasco, reiteró ante un grupo de vecinos de Paine que la economía chilena está aguantando bien la crisis internacional derivada de la situación financiera en los Estados Unidos.

El secretario de Estado volvió este miércoles del viaje de 48 horas a Nueva York y Boston -donde se encontraba acompañando a la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet- y se dirigió inmediatamente a la comuna de Paine donde se reunió con pobladores.

"Así como en sus casas ustedes tienen las cuentas de la familia ordenaditas y no gastan más de lo que tienen y todos tratamos de tener algunos ahorritos, por si viene alguna dificultad, como país hemos hecho lo mismo tenemos nuestras cuentas, las cuentas del país, del Gobierno, del Fisco ordenadas, no tenemos deudas", señaló.

Velasco recordó que Chile ha sufrido crisis como la de 1982 o la llamada "crisis asiática" a fines de los años 90 en las que habían muchos problemas para pagar las deudas del país, "esta vez es muy distinto".

Además, agregó que el Gobierno va a hacer lo posible por seguir con las cuentas ordenadas y anunció que la próxima semana se va a presentar el presupuesto fiscal para el año 2009 donde las cuentas seguirán ordenadas y contribuyendo al combate de la inflación.

Looks like Venezuela is the 3rd-4th largest supplier of oil to the US.
I believe that is commerce.
and its not just banana or coffee, it's something that is very vital to the US economy (truckers, commuters, airlines, etc)

Chile’s current per capita GDP of US$14,673 is the highest in Latin America, according to the Overview of the World Economy 2008 published by the International Monetary Fund. The IMF also reported that Chile’s economy will continue to lead the region at least until 2013, the year in which its per capita GDP will reach close to US$20,000, the minimum for attaining “developed country” status."

It's interesting how many people on the right I've heard almost celebrating that the price of oil is going down and how they predict that Venezuela's economy is gonna crash.

They are missing just 1 small thing....

La inflación de los últimos 12 meses ha sido de todas formas altísima en comparación a los últimos 20 años (8,9%).

I dont think it implies that.
Besides, Colombia should be diversifying its trade partners, like Chile has. Which is why it has not been affected so much with the fall of the U.S market.
