Bolivia's Morales to push land reform

LA PAZ, Bolivia - Bolivia's president will impose his sweeping land-reform bill by decree if conservative lawmakers refuse to end their boycott of the Senate by Tuesday afternoon, a government spokesman said.

President Evo Morales' ultimatum on Monday came as thousands of Indian marchers from across the country began arriving in the capital city of La Paz to support the bill, which would grant Morales' government the power to seize unproductive land for redistribution to Bolivia's landless poor.

Presidential spokesman Alex Contreras said senators from Podemos, the conservative opposition party, had until 2 p.m. Tuesday to return to their desks or Morales would use his presidential authority to circumvent Congress and declare the law in effect.

AP Poll: Chavez way ahead in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez holds a wide margin over his main challenger as he seeks a third term in Dec. 3 elections, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that also revealed many government opponents are worried they could face reprisals for how they vote.

About 59 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Chavez for a third term, while 27 percent said they would support opposition candidate Manuel Rosales. Thirteen percent of those surveyed by the polling firm Ipsos for The Associated Press said they were undecided or wouldn't answer.

This is actual a good thing. Helps small businesses in the exporting market. Specially the agricultural and wine industry.

Interesting,
since many people here talk about Venezuela inflation (lost of value of currency) as proof that Chavez is destroying Venezuela.

Is inflation good or bad?

You are getting confused. Back in the early 2000 we had a way lower inflation than today with a dollar worth over $700 Pesos. Much, much weaker peso than today. Also, good idea to point out that the Chilean peso is getting weaker to the U.S dollar, its still very strong against other Latin American currencies. Inflation is bad, every which way you look at it.

A weak currency doesn't equal higher inflation

It means one of two things:
- Inflation because businesses raise their prices to make up for inflation
- No inflation, businesses start doing bad because the businesses that import products have to pay more for them.

Not always the case, in fact for exporting countries like Chile and China, which export much more than they import, a weak currency (against US Dollar at least) is good for business.

I guess that applies to Venezuela, too.
Since Venezuela is the 5th largest exporter of oil in the World.

Might be, but its the "weaker" currency that helps. The inflation has very negative effects.

BTW, I hope the "La derecha" wins here in Chile. IMO it will do the country much good.

It just irks me... Ecuador and Chile are supposedly the best friends and eternal allies in the region.. why be in the left ??? Albeit Chile is in a much better state that Ecuador or any other country in the region will be in for a long time.

Hopefully if Chile goes to a "right" leaning gov't, Ecuador can follow suite and overthrow that tyrrant Correa. Many in Ecuador, especially in my city want that SOB out. He aint doint shit for the economy, and it's the poor, indigenas, and ignorant ppl who are the backbone of his following.

According to all of the polls, the right wing party here will win. More than the fact that imo they are better, whats really important is the change in government, even if its not to a party I like. the left has been in charge for way too long, almost two decades now.

Now I dont completely discredit the left, they have done a few good things (except for Lagos), I just think the right will do it better. Chile has prospered for having a capitalistic, free trading economy, and slowly it has been getting more and more regularized. All they do is socialize the debts but privatize the profits.

I cant really comment on Ecuadors Correa but all i got to know is that he sympathizes with Chavez:p

He does sympathize utterly! ... at first I thought, well maybe this dude besides being cool with Chavez, might be bringing something different to the table.. I was quickly proved wrong. Even though I never liked him, I kinda set some time to see how it goes. but NOPE- he is his lapdog. Now Chavez is talking trash about my city ( Santiago de Guayaquil ) and comparing it to what's happening in Zuila, Venezuela and Santa Cruz, Bolivia, which I see no wrong in how they are protesting against their gov't. But in his comparison he makes it seem like we all want to create chaos and secede, which is utter bullshit.

The mayor of Guayaquil spoke out against this mofo, and to let ya all know Jaime Nebot, the mayor aint no pushover, and has as much balls and mouth as Correa does and an equal following. He is the only one speaking out against Chavez intefering in Ecuador's internal affairs.

Correa has been critisized for looking the other way and keeping his mouth shut about Chavez' comments. Where is his sense of "patria" where is his unending promise to not let anyone "pisotear o irrespetar" la patria.. HAHAHA.. If it was Uribe and his cronies doing the talking, he would jump on it in less time than it takes to get un quick "polvito" If it was Bush.. ha.. he'd probably defy time and have a response before hand.

All Chavez has done is traded Venezuela from USA to Russia.

All Chavez has done is traded Venezuela from USA to Russia.
FYI,
one reason that that happened is that the US put a ban on sell of army equipment to Venezuela.
Venezuela needed to fix its F-16, tried to buy some from Spain, and the US blocked it because the Spanish planes "have american technology in it"

Venezuela then had to go to Russia to buy army related equipment.

It's the same as if I push you and then say that you are stupid because you can't stand on your own feet.
