Chivas USA - Where do you think they SHOULD play

Where do you think the SHOULD play?

I'm bored, and I wonder where everyone thinks Chivas SHOULD play (Not where they "probably" will play)

What's your take on the stadiums, fan base, etc.

Even though I do not like the idea of Chivas USA I think they should play here in San Diego. Everyone keeps saying San Diego is a "hotbed" or whatever, for soccer and I guess putting a team there would test that theory. Plus, it would create the classic 3-way rivalry like in the NFL and MLB where it's the Bay Area vs. So. Cal/So. Cal vs. So Cal. In baseball terms it's the Dodgers/Giants/Padres rivalry and in football it's the Raiders/49's/Chargers feud. If Vergara choses San Diego you can add the Galaxy/Earthquakes/Chivas USA into the group too.

The only thing stopping Chivas from confirming San Diego as their city of choice is the whole stadium issue. Land in San Diego is extremely expensive and a lot of the prime spots which land would be cheap is owned by the federal government for military purposes. But if Vergara wants it badly then he'll have to pay for the stadium himself because the tax payers would nix that idea with a quickness.

I love America's Finest City (that would be San Diego), and I may move back in that general direction when I finish law school, but I think if Vergara wants to play up the Mexican/Chicano (I apologize if that term is out of date) nationalism angle, then the LA Coliseum is place where that will be a big draw. If you want a derby, that's the place to put the team. I see packed houses at HDC and 40k at the Coliseum. The higher visibility of MLS in the LA area would help GaLAxy more than the drag of a second team would hurt, and it would help the league as a whole. There are some anti-Chivas Mexicans who would become GaLAxy fans out of spite.

San Diegans of all ethnicities would probably be more enthusiastic about a truly San Diego team. They are less impressed with poses and attitudes than Angelinos. If Vergara goes to San Diego he should play down the Chivas connection, and I don't think he wants to do that.

Provided it doesn't impact upon the fanbase of the Galaxy, I'd say they are best off in the HDC. Vergara's happy (and not losing money), AEG is happy (and making money) and it gives them three or four big money games in LA every year. Imagine - going to your own stadium as an away fan!
