A good attacking midfielder who really only functions at his best when played as the advanced midfielder in a 4-4-1-1.
I don't think he's good enough right now to be a starter in a 4-4-2 (on the left or in the middle). However, if we had the CM's and wide players that everyone seems to recognize we need, I think he would be a great player to have to give us that 4-4-1-1 option and would be a great player to put on as a substitute to help push the team to a win.
IMHO, he and Denilson are on a similar level. They're both solid players that can make great contributions and I think would make great backups. But right now, I do not believe either should be starters for Arsenal (if we had the midfielders we should)...at least not right now, they might both develop into great players b/c they both have all the requirements to be really good, they just haven't developed completely yet.

Denilson is way better than Diaby. He is smarter with the ball, a better passer, and he has more of a work rate to get stuck in and battle.
Diaby's position is AM apparently, but did you see his passing in the final third today?? it was horrendous. He was blindly playing one touch balls to their defenders and showing zero creativity... that is when he wasn't dribbling himself into giveaways as usual.

a guy who needs to be sold.
He has tons of potential, but as mentioned earlier - he only really functions as the advanced mid in a 4-4-1-1. He is garbage when played out on the wing, or in Cesc's position. Problem is with Ade, Bendtner, Eduardo and RVP - 4-4-2 will be the formation we use most of the time.
No point keeping a guy who only plays a well in a position he will rarely get to a play for us. I like the 4-5-1 (or 4-4-1-1), but we aren't going to change our system, and I'd rather sell Diaby to the continent where he may get the opportunity to meet his full potential, and bring in someone who excels at one of the roles in a 4-4-2.
There are a few players on our squad who are decent, and have the potential to be excellent, but don't really seem to have a role to play in our 4-4-2. I'd rather we move these players on and bring in backups who are basically doppelgangers of our starters.

Diaby is.... a liability until he gets serious playing time in the center of the pitch. He can finish, has some athleticism, and looks to have the engine to play, but the way Wenger is playing him now, he's not developing at all.
I like Denilson, and am still unsold on Song, but if we compare where they are in the development from the beginning of last season to now, they are clearly more advanced than Diaby and bring more to this squad.

going to be a top quality player.
just not with Arsenal, until he picks up some on the field intelligence... holds the ball way too long, and is a colorblind...
he will be a top player tho, but he needs a team built around him... he wont find that at Arsenal...

Why is it that whenever we get what is percieved by some as a bad result a thread like this pops up? YES Diaby did not have a particularly good game today, but we drew with the league leaders with ten men. There is no need to go off and moan about particular players considering EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE LEAGUE WOULD TAKE THAT POINT. Go and support a bottom half Championship team for a year and see the quality of the players they have, and if you still come back and feel entitled to moan about one of our SQUAD PLAYERS (NOT A STARTER) I will by all means listen to your rant. Seriously, if people are starting to look for a reason to take a suicide pill every time we draw a match with 10 men on this board, I won't bother posting here anymore, there's no point.

Yeah there is always a thread about X player, but we kinda need a discussion thread for each player, and over time this will turn into the all purpose diaby thread.
The starting of the thread may have been reactionary, but most of the discussion within it has just been a simple rehashing of the summer's diaby debate.

....not a left-sided midfielder and a player who has failed to ever use his left foot in a competitive match
the guy does have some amazing potential..i just dont know what wenger is trying to do with him. i actually prefer him to denilson (probably in the minority on that one) because he actually takes defenders on 1v1 and creates something out of nothing many times although he does lose lose the ball more..
i bet if wenger gave him a run of games he would be more productive than denilson

Denilson is a superior passer, and as good technically I feel... just that Diaby is a dribbler, while Denilson is a passer... Diaby is more physically gifted, but Denilson is much more intelligent and complete...
problem is Diaby is 22-23 now? Denilson is only 20... Denilson is going to get much better, not so sure about Diaby...
I honestly am not sure if it will work for him at Arsenal, but we will see...
