Yeah, none of the reports say anything about their having an option to buy him, so it looks like a move purely intended to get him some more playing time. I'll have to try to catch a Koblenz match or two now. I have still never seen him play.
Isn't his contract up in June anyway? Wouldn't he be free to do what he wants at that point anyway?

No. Fischer's contract with Stuttgart is good through the 2011 season. If you looked it up at Transfermarkt.de, they have his Koblenz loan contract listed with his Stuttgart contract data in "weitere Angaben".

Team is in Portugal now. Tomorrow is a friendly against Ajax. Will be interesting to see how they do.

They beat Ajax :) - 3-2.

Our goal scorers were Lanig, Hitzlsperger and Schieber.

Gomez, Boulahrouz, Khedira, Rudy and new buy Gebhart didn't play. Our side was this:

Lehmann (46. Stolz) - Funk, Osorio, Delpierre, Magnin (46. Träsch) - Bastürk (46. Hilbert), Lanig, Hitzlsperger (46. Mandjeck), Simak - Marica (46. Elson), Schieber

I'm hoping VfBTV will provide highlights of the game later - would be fun to see. :)

EDIT: Tasci, Boka and Cacau also couldn't play due to minor injuries.

Lovely goals by VfB, all three, and a good result against Ajax who are already starting into the second part of the season in a few days. :) Stolz looked really promising, too. He comes out for crosses with confidence, he made a fine reaction save and did well in a one against one situation where he closed down the angle well and blocked the shot. Seems that he learns all the right things and if he keeps going like that, why not give him the chance as no 1 in when Lehmann retires in (most likely I think) 1 1/2 years? He is at a good age, too.

And there is a nice BBC interview video (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/football_focus/7780455.stm) with Jens from last month.

"I thought he was Spanish?" Mwahahah! :p No really, maybe a bit depressing in regards of what he says about the differences between Bundesliga and PL but that is the truth I am afraid.

Yeah, i'd agree with what he said. Good interview!

In the news today:
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/artikel/502845/

Gomez seems to think there's a good chance he'll be playing for VfB next season as well. That would be great news! But I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this one interview.

VfB played a friendly against Rot-Weiss Oberhausen today. They were down by two goals but actually hit 3 in the last 20 minutes to win 3-2. Gomez scored one... and Basturk scored twice  - both from Simak assists. I'm looking forward to seeing the highlights.

Then put emphasis in this. ;)

Mario Gomez really hasn't done anything this season to whet the foreign clubs' appetites. And some really went off him after his horrible national team performances.

If there are offers, they won't be what they were.

Plus, the only club who seemed willing to over-pay for him, Bayern, isn't willing to do so anymore.

If you look at it that way, unless Gomez has an "Ibisevic-like" second half of the Bundesliga season, I'd be throughly surprised if Gomez isn't at VfB next season.

Well, I watched highlights of the VfB - Oberhausen game now.

Here's the side that played:

Lehmann (46. Stolz) - Osorio (46. Funk), Mandjeck, Delpierre (46. Boulahrouz), Träsch - Hilbert, Khedira (46. Elson), Hitzlsperger, Gebhart (46. Simak) - Gomez, Schieber (46. Bastürk)

Mandjeck got to play the full 90 minutes but seemed insecure in a couple of situations, Traesch was there the full 90 as well. Hilbert played pretty well, making some good runs and giving some good crosses in, including an assist, on the right flank. Khedira was also creative and good in the first half. Elson did get to play the second half, and he had a couple of nice plays as well. Gebhart made his debut yesterday, but the highlights didn't show too much from him, except one moment where he should have gotten a penalty for being fouled. Simak was very good after he came in at halftime, he played well and created two of the goals through his actions. Both of Basturk's goals were tap ins, but I guess he did well to be in the position. Gomez scored once but could've scored 3-4 times, he actually messed up quite a few other 100% chances. Schieber, alongside him, didn't do as much this time around.

Mario has scored 16 in 23 matches in all competitions so far this season. He isn't exactly stinking it up. He's "only" got seven so far in the league, and that without reaching anything close to top form yet, so just a marginally better second half of the season will see him at 15-20 goals in the league, which is hardly terrible.

No one said he was stinking it up or was "terrible."

He may not have been stinking it up or was "terrible", but he has had enough bad performances in the league and in the national shirt to lose some interest.

You can throw up all the numbers you want, but that is fact.

The season is only half over. He can win back that interest.

But the major comments were about the here and now.

Such sensitivity. Sheesh! :(

And I am just pointing out that his play has not been nearly as poor as seems to be the prevailing perception. Yes, the EM disaster really threw a wrench of the works of the hype machine, but he is still one of the better young forwards in Europe. My point was really only that the interest is probably right back to where it was before if he finishes with his customary 20-plus goals in all competitions.

Stuttgart demands too much for him, that's why there isn't as much interest in him as there could be. Player from Bundesliga especially don't go for much abroad when they are sold, and that is where the problem lies when Stuttgart wants to sell Gomez only if the buying team is over-paying. Asking for more than 25m is too much unless City gets involved, which could be the team he might unfortunately play for next season (hope he doesn't go to EPL IF he leaves).

Unfortunately, the "prevailing perception" does just that. It prevails. I know what the guy can still do, but no matter what you throw up there, the "prevailing perception" is that he has slipped a bit.

Yes, the EM disaster really threw a wrench of the works of the hype machine, but he is still one of the better young forwards in Europe.

It wasn't just the European Championship failure. It continued in the following World Cup qualifiers and the start of the Bundesliga season.

Better young forwards in Europe? What do you mean by that? Top 5, Top 10, what??

IMO, top 5 is arguable. Top 10 definitely.

My point was really only that the interest is probably right back to where it was before if he finishes with his customary 20-plus goals in all competitions.

And that's the difference in our points. Your opinion seems to be based on an "if he does this" scenario.

I'm not talking about what he might do. I'm talking about what he has done and what is FACT at this moment in time.

I know that he can pull the interest back and agreed with you on that from the start. I exaggerated by saying he needed to have an "Ibisevic-like" second half of the season. I admit that. However, you write as if I somehow said he can't or won't win back that interest when I left that possibility open from the very beginning.

Again, I'm talking about the level of interest in Gomez RIGHT NOW. Not what the level of interest in Gomez COULD BE at end of the season.

We'll address that when we get there.

You know what? I'm glad that the others lost interest in Gomez. In Stuttgart we know what he can do. And if we're the only ones, all the better, that means that he'll stay.

For those who didn't know, Artur Boka signed a one-year extension with VfB the other day.

According to this Soccernet.com article (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=609719&sec=transfers&cc=5739), Boka turned down an offer from Tottenham to remain in Stuttgart even after his superstar international compatriot, Didier Drogba, advised him to join Spurs.

You guys will love what Boka says about VfB in the article.

Great going on Boka's part! :D

You're right, I love it ;)

Especially the last part:
Spurs' offer of more money was not enough to tip the balance in their favour either.

"It would be good to have more money, but that is not everything," added left-back.

My feelings as well. I'm more than fine with teams being scared off by the price.
