Basturk had nothing in the tank when you guys signed him. I thought you guys could do better and I said so.
We wanted him in Dortmund at the time because we couldn't afford a decent central midfielder then.
But in you guys swooped with 3M per season. Has to be the worst deal you guys ever made.
I am actually sorry about that for you guys. No one was going to sign Basturk. For him it was going to be Dortmund, Bochum or Turkey. I can't believe Heldt didn't realize that.
I don't know a single VfB fan who was excited or even in the least optimistic about the signing. I certainly wasn't, and he has been even more worthless than I had feared.
I can't think of a single particularly good signing since Heldt has been running things. I still think Marica could come good and at least do a decent job, if not exactly live up to the expectations that usually come with being a club's record signing.
For me this should be the lineup:
--------------------Gomez----------------Marica--------------------------
Lanig-------------------------------------------------------------Hilbert/Simak
----------------Hitzi----------------------Khedira---------------------------
Träsch---------------Delpierre-----------------Tasci--------Osorio/Boulahrouz
GK is obvious. I know Träsch is more of a righty, but he can do it out on the left, and last night was really the last straw for me with Boka. I don't care if he ever plays for us again.

Rainer, maybe no one was "excited", but there were enough people here at BigSoccer trying to justify the signing and his salary when I made my points against it.
If I remember properly, I was accused here more than once of just being mad because he didn't sign with Dortmund.
Don't believe me? Ask Vfbstuttgartfan......

Jens Lehmann was a pretty good signing.
Did Heldt do the Pardo/Osorio signing??

I like that lineup and agree with you on Boka. He'll hurt you guys.....

Yeah, Lehmann has worked out pretty well. Personally, I can't stand him, but I still hope we can convince him to stick around for next season.
Were Osorio and Pardo under Heldt? They would have been among his very first signings if they were, and they have both been good, so credit to him on that.
I have still been a bit disappointed, but he was also responsible for getting Veh the job, and that worked well enough for a championship and a Pokal final, so I probably should complain so much.
I can't speak for anyone giving you crap re: the Bastürk signing, as I had yet to start lurking BS obsessively.

Here's how I would rate all of Heldt's signings:
Successful Transfers:
Jens Lehmann
Ricardo Osorio
Pavel Pardo
Roberto Hilbert
Decent Transfers:
Arthur Boka
Khalid Boulahrouz
Jan Simak
Martin Lanig
Toni da Silva
Ciprian Marica
Failed Transfers:
Raphael Schaefer
Gledson
Yildiray Basturk
Benny Lauth
Ewerthon
Sergiu Radu
Obviously can't rate Gebhart yet.
But yeah I think Heldt has done a lot of uninspirational moves, and ome utterly horrible transfers. But to his credit he has had a few excellent buys. Pardo, Hilbert and Osorio all made up integral parts of the title-winning side. Without any of them we almost definitely wouldn't have won the title, and it was Heldt who brought them all to Stuttgart. So credit where it's due.
In the last 1 and a half seasons though Lehmann has been the only excellent acquisition. But of course the jury is still out on a lot of players - can Marica start to consistently show his talent and score more goals? Can Boulahrouz become a consistent starter like he was expected to be? Will Simak and Lanig eventually become key players or will they remain consistent but average squad player? Etc.

Superb post! Thanks so much for that information!
One question though. Radu was only a 300,000 Euro loan deal. Was he really there long enough to be considered a "failed transfer?"
I believe if anyone can mark Radu down as a "failed transfer", it is Wolfsburg and in my opinion, that was more their fault than his.

Well, he was with us for half a season and played in one game, aganst Energie Cottbus, where he was very bad.
Even if he was only there for half a season I ask myself what was the point in loaning him if we played him only once? Way I see it, he was pretty much an unnecessary acquisition who played no role in the squad.

You play a guy in one match and you expect him to be good??
You now have my agreement that it was a "bad transfer", but was that because Radu was so bad or VfB's handling of the entire situation was so bad??

vfbstuttgart meant that it was a bad signing from the stuttgart manager, he didn't say that Radu was a bad player, just that it was no point in loaning him if he was only to play one game. That meens he was a bad signing. 300.000 euro thrown away if you ask me.

I said I had agreed with that. I only wanted to know what he felt went wrong.
Thanks for stating the obvious though.

Regarding Radu:
I don't think he was at fault, he just wasn't good enough to compete for the first team places. I was more criticisizing Heldt for loaning someone who there was no use in getting.
Oh, and I forgot, Alexander Farnerud should probably also be added to the list on the last page, in his case under 'Failed transfers'.

Right. I understood what you meant in criticizing Heldt. That is why I said in my last response you have my agreement on it was indeed being a failed transfer.
I was just curious to see who you thought was at fault for it being a failed transfer.
And you just totally answered that question. Thank you for doing that.

I think the fact that I totally forgot about him shows that I agree with that too. :D

Wasn't the shot off the post deflected??
Also, the goal was more Bayern screwing up than anything he did.
I'm sorry man, I thought Gomez sucked along with most of the team on Tuesday night.

LAST-MINUTE TRANSFER:
VfB have loaned defender Georg Niedermeier from FC Bayern (II).
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/artikel/503758/
Well this really came out of nowhere. He seems to have a solid record in the 3rd league with an average rating of 3.00 and he is currently 22 years old. Supposedly he will be used as a possible alternative to Tasci, Delpierre and Boulahrouz in central defence. Good luck getting past them I say - this loan seems a bit odd, I don't expect him to be able to pose a threat to any of the starting central defenders.
But we'll see.
Either way, good luck!

Well, I'm pretty sure Bayern aren't the ones who initiated this.
Otherwise, they probably could have loaned him to Dortmund since we just sold Robert Kovac to Dinamo Zagreb.
But then again, they probably don't want another central defender going to BVB, loving it and asking to stay! LOL!! :D
I'd think your guys asked for this loan.
Although, admittedly, why they would, I have no idea.......
Maybe VfB is thinking of selling Delpierre or Boulahrouz???

Do we have an option to buy him after the loan period is over?

Ok, I found out a bit more about him through Heldt's pre-Gladbach press conference.
- He is staying with us on loan for 1 and a half years, so he'll be with us next season as well. That already makes more sense - I didn't really get why'd they get him for just half a season.
- Heldt said we'll see what to do once 2010 comes around. I guess that means we'd have an option to buy him if he does well. His contract with Bayern is until 2012.
- He was the captain of Bayern II this season, Heldt says they first noticed him after he impressed in the VfB II - Bayern II match.
