"D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen is one of thirty players selected by U.S. Men's National Team (http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=50572) Coach Bruce Arena for a training camp beginning January 4th at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif."

"Ben had a terrific 2003 season and this call-up is well deserved," said United (http://www.dcunited.com/index.cfm?section=main&cont_id=220966) Technical Director Dave Kasper. "We are pleased that he is fully recovered from his injury and we look forward to big things from Ben in 2004."

Congrats to Benny. It's great to see him back on the roster, even if it's for a friendly. Hopefully he can re-solidify himself on the right-side midfield.

It is a bit curious that Bobby did not get called in. He played really well during the U20 matches. I would have thought he would have been called in. But then again, a lot of the regulars for the full side are off the roster so it probably doesn't have anything to do with his recent play.

They could just be giving Bobby a rest though. After the year he's had, I'd say he deserves it.

Bobby is in the U-23 camp that is training along side with this rag-tag bunch of National Teamers..

That is why you also don't see Beasley, Donovan, Buddle and Martino not in the US camp as well..

Has anyone even *heard* of Robbie Russell?

james It's Denmark. A team made up of just players based in Denmark from all reports. This means it's about as close to an A-League international that we'll see. Denmark's "A" team could very well win Euro 2004.

Thx,

Jay!

Agreed. Anyone think it's a bit odd, though, that the DC United website is using a picture of Ben with Nottingham Forest for this story?

yes, i have heard of him and seen him play. he is the right back for sogndal in the norwegian league and had a fantastic season this last year. his team played well early and his ratings in the weekly papers were very high.

my brother-in-law plays in the norwegian league and he told me that he and his club (not sogndal) think russell is the best right back in the norwegian league.

I thought that was a bit weird as well.

i've been wanting to see this guy play, as i've only heard good things over on the ya board.

one interesting thing from that site's bio of robbie -"Tidlegare klubbar: LA Galaxy"

is that his favorite club? if so, i think that's awesome. he could have said manu or real madrid. ;)

also, he's apparently a renaissance man... "Favorittlitteratur: Shakespeare"

"Tidlegare" means "former" or "previous". the galaxy were his previous club before sogndal (although i have also seen his university--i forget which one--listed as his previous club).
