Looking at this list I'd say we need at least one more striker and another winger. There's been rumours of Villa going for Heskey and Roque Santa Cruz although Im not sure how likely Blackburn is to sell the latter.

Wait...don't they already own Curtis Davies?
From the comments coming from Santa Cruz & Blackburn it seems he may be on his way in January...but he's also linked to Man City (who you'd think would outspend you) with the Hughes connection...although there are rumors that he'll be fired...

Yeah Im pretty sure we own him now. As for Santa Cruz, it seems that every time we go after a good player there's always one or two clubs with more cash after him. It will be interesting to see if Blackburn do let him go, if they do then we'll be right in there with the rest of the clubs after him. I think he is the striker Villa really want, Heskey is more like plan B.

City, reportedly, spent more money in an attempt to get Diarra, and that didn't work out like they wanted it to.
Money isn't everything to everybody in the world of soccer.
I think Santa Cruz would be enticed by possible Champions League soccer as well as being able to play on a good squad that won't just be a "one and done" like Blackburn was.
The thing is, if you get Santa Cruz, who gets knocked out of regular playing time? Carew or Abonlahor?
And, is there any chance you guys will sell Liverpool Ashley Young and Abonlahor? ;)
Just kidding. Good luck in your pursuit for Champions League soccer. Beat Arsenal and their "pretty soccer" playing arses.

I think Carew and Gab can still get regular playing time if we add another striker. You need about 4 good strikers if you are going to play in Champions League and attempt to crack the top four. Plus players will always miss games as a result of injury and suspension. So at the moment we're probably one winger and one striker short.

That's a true statement about the 4 strikers. Even though Carew is a good player, and has been a good buy by MON, I think that Santa Cruz (given he recovers his form from last year) would be a step up.
I for one, would be thoroughly entertained by a 3 man striking front of Abonlahor, Young, and Santa Cruz. Except if you were playing us, then I would be a little nervous.
You need a winger? We will sell you Pennant or Babel. Pennant is definitely for sale. I wish Babel was, because he is becoming more and more a pain in the ass to Rafa and the club.

Yeah Santa Cruz would be a better tall than Carew and he is also younger. Delfouneso is still developing and Harewood is not really a striker we need.
A winger (preferably a right) would be good cos it will mean we can play Young up front and allow us to have more speed. There was talk of McGeady coming over but I think that has died down a little.

The rumor is A. Young to Real Madrid which would be a much bigger loss than Carew.

That rumor is pretty well dead as well. The belief is that R. Madrid have shot their January load already with Diarra and Hunterlaar.
Hard to imagine them backing Ramos with much more cash considering he has a six month contract and the league has already basically been won by Barca.
However, it underscores that it is absolutley vital for Villa hold on to the 4th spot as this summer there will be numerous suitors for Young both domestic and foriegn and there is basically no chance Villa will be able to hold onto him without being able to offer him CL football.

The rumour is that they were gonna offer 30 mil, surely they cant have that much left unless they make a sale but even then I doubt Villa would be stupid enough to sell him now that we are so close to getting a top 4 finish. Selling Young would kill any hope of making the top 4.

Villa linked to Jermaine Defoe and Darren Bent.

Im not sure about these two, Id still prefer Roque or Heskey and if we cant get either Id prefer we hold on to that money as opposed to making a rushed decision for the sake of spending. It seems Liverpool will be bidding for Heskey and Barry when the window opens.

Yea, I heard they are now interested in Roque Santa Cruz and Antonio Valencia
