ok it's that time again - take both club and country football into account at your own ratio - internationals should probably count more for europeans who had the most important matches (euro2004 qualifiers) - use whatever reasonable formation you wish, but please let's not put players out of position just to squeeze them in

mine:

................buffon
........nesta.........chivu
hinkel.........................maldini
................ballack
......giuly..............nedved
................zidane
.........ruud..........henry

OK here goes:

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon(Juventus/Italy)
He is as dominant as they come today. Dida was a very close second.

Right Back: Carles Puyol(Bacelona/Spain)
Without him it's frightening how bad Barca's backline would be.

Left Back: Gianluca Zambrotta(Juventus/Italy)
Best season of his career. Most important player at Juve behind only Nedved and Buffon.

Center Backs: Alesandro Nesta(Milan/Italy) and Paolo Maldini(Milan)
Held together the best defense in the world last year. Currently there is nobody better.

Defensive Midfielder: Gennero Gattuso(Milan/Italy)
Played like a man possessed last year. He even became better technically.

Right Midfield: Alexander Hleb(Stuttgart/Belarus)
He is gonna be a star sooner rather than later. Too bad he plays for Belarus and won't make it to many international tournaments.

Left Midfield: Pavel Nedved(Juventus/Czech Rep.)
Best player in the world last year.

Attacking Midfield: Francesco Totti(Roma/Italy)
It's surprised me at how little he figured in the world awards this year. He scored 14 goals last year in an injury plagued year and single-handedly saved Roma from relegation.

Forward: Thierry Henry(Arsenal/France)
He is scary good at the moment.

Striker: Ruud Van Nistelrooy(ManU/Holland)
He does what he is asked for, score goals. What else do you want from him?

You probably were not a regular at other leagues and this is revealed in your blatant bias towards Italian or players playing in Italy.

My BEST for 2003:- 1-4-3-3

----------------Buffon--------------

--Salgado--Nesta--Maldini-- R. Carlos

----Beckham------Zidane-----Nedved

-----Van Nistilrooij--Henry---Ronaldo

My selection takes into account performances going into the first quarter of 2003 which falls into the last season and performances since then to date which goes into the current season(2003/2004).

That's funny, your calling me biased when you put 5 Real players in your first eleven. Talk about hypocritical. FYI, I have seen probably more games this past year than you have from leagues around the world. If I'm so biased then please tell me which player doesn't deserve a place in the eleven. And enlighten me why Michel Salgado was the best right back last year. I can think of 4 better right backs off the top of my head who played better than him last year(Thuram, J. Zanetti, Trabelsi, Puyol) And that doesn't include Hinkel and Mancini who are off to flying starts this year.
