View Full Version : Penalties??

Clearly Owen has no business ever shooting from the spot again. As Matt pointed out in another post, he's missed 6 out of 13 now. Considering the talent on the team, the idea of him taking anymore is just insane. Who would you choose??
Clearly Berger can make them on a consistent basis, but his playing time will be slim to none and then probably only subs. Smicer can take them, he's shown. I'm assuming Riise would tear the net a couple of times. Murphy, Gerrard, has anyone seen them take them before?? I remember Carra's penalty against Birmingham City in the Worthington Cup final was a beauty. Who else took them then?? Fowler, McAllister, Hamann (whoops), Barmby I think?? Oh well.

Unfortunately our best penalty taker over the last few years has been McAllister, so we do need to look elsewhere.
I wouldn't mind if Owen's shot had been in the corner, but straight down the middle! Ugh!
Riise seems a good option but I could see him blazing one over the top too. Has Diouf had a history of taking pens?
Dudek anybody? :D

And if you're going to put it down the middle, at least try to make it 2-3 feet in the air so it doesn't catch the keepers foot...
Dudek...the next Chilavert?? (sic??) Hehehe, no thanks. :)

Jari would be my choice, except, of course, that he never seems to be on the pitch...
Among the usual starters, I'd go with Riise, Murphy and maybe Gerrard. I'd also like to see what Djouf can do from the spot.

hmmmm...Owen's penalty the other day was really just a fluke in my mind, but never seemed too confident taking them anyways...I'd like to see Riise or Murphy start taking them myself...the again maybe Henchoz taking them is a good idea too :D...

i think Diouf missed his penalty in the Africa Nations' Cup final this past February.
i think the cooler heads should prevail on the penalties - like Sami, Didi, and Berger (if he's in...wish he could play more)
of course, we will debate this, and then Owen will proceed to make 20 in a row (let's hope :))

Didi missed one against Birmingham in the League Cup final.
Looks like it might be down to Riise, Gerrard or Murphy. All good free kick takers, hard shots, accurate. I wouldn't want to get in the way of one of Riise's efforts!
Why didn't anyone mention Xavier? :D

Thats i actually a good idea...the keeper would take one look at him and break down laughing so it would be an easy goal
now now, in all fairness Abel had a great game Sunday...

I know, he is just an easy target.
He did play well. Credit where credit is due. As soon as we lose a match it will be all his fault!
Back to the pens, is there a goalie who could stop one of Riise's rockets?

Depends what you mean by "stopping". If you mean "come to a halt somewhere out in the car park, still clutching the ball", then more or less any keeper out there could "stop" a Riise penalty. :D
Actually, I agree with JRedknapp11 for once - Sami would be ideal, assuming he actually showed some form of aptitidue for taking a well-struck penalty. Let's give it a go!

Well someones going to have to step up. While we're on the subject, has anyone ever seen or heard of Gerrard or Murphy take a penalty, first team or reserve??

For me, the ideal penalty is struck side footed, with decent power, low, and finishes anywhere in the side netting.
McAllister was fantastic, and he was one of the best right footed players I ever saw at putting it to his right, keeper's left. Solid every time, and the one agianst Barcelona in the UEFA Cup two seasons ago instantly springs to mind.... Ah - sweet memories.
I think any of Sunday's midfielders would do well. John Arne would not necessarily have to go all Julian Dicks on the ball, he can place it with the best of them, and Murphy, Stevie G and Hamann can all stroke the ball around. I prefer placement, rather than power.
Any of those four. Lets hope GH makes a change.
Doesn't the Captain usually have a say in things? If so, Sami would have already take one. But in his defense, if Michael Owen, he of 100+ goals for LFC, says "I fancy it, Cap'n" Big Sami will probably concede it to #10 every time.

I'm sorry, 100+ goals or not, if your record is 6 out of 13 missed, you shouldn't be taking anymore, period, end of discussion. As captain, he shouldn't be scared of denying Owen. And Owen, as an intelligent person, shouldn't be asking to take anymore.

It's funny. During the World Cup match against Argentina, Michael gets tripped and we get that pen.
I see Beckham stepping up to take it and my bias takes over and I am yelling at the telly in the middle of the night. 'Hey Owen was tripped he should take it!"
Now I am sure he would have scored :D but if he hadn't he (we) would never have lived it down would he (we)?
As it is Beckham put it down the middle so Owen would have done the same and scored right?
My vote is still for Riise, just like Roy of the Rovers he can put the ball and the goalie right through the back of the net. Uh-oh showing my age again! :)

You really think that Sami knows Owen's penalties record? I don't think Michael even knew what his record was, but hopefully he does now. Sami isn't scared of Owen, he probably doesn't know just how bad Michael is at taking the spot kicks.
My point is that if Michael tells Sami he wants it, Sami will probably let him take it, especially instead of Sami having a go himself.
Hopefully, GH will tell Michael to stop taking them for a bit.
And I agree that Riise would be a good choice. No need to go Roy of the Rovers or Julian Dicks on the ball, just slot it home like he did against Villa last weekend.

i am 100% sure micheal knew his own penalty record as every miss would burn him up ridiculously. murphy's penalty today was very smooth, easily beating jones even though he guessed correctly. one would have to assume it is his job for the time being. i for one would be a little scared of riise taking them, although they would be exciting to watch.
