The Australian Soccer Association (ASA) has refused to comment on reports that outgoing Australian Rugby Union boss John O'Neill has been approachedto run soccer's new Premier League next year.

"All I will say on that is that we continue to search for a capable candidate from Australia and around the world," the spokesman said.

"Anyone can apply."

O'Neill last week called it quits at the ARU after eight years, capped off by the wildly successful World Cup.

A Sydney newspaper on Wednesday quoted a source saying that ASA chairman Frank Lowy is chasing O'Neill to head up the new Premier League, scheduled to begin in late 2004.

In the past, O'Neill has expressed reluctance to get involved in soccer, which has traditionally had administration troubles.

I would much rather see a soccer guy run the new league than a rugby one.

he isn't a rugby person par say but he is the public face of Australian Rugby and is on the financial side of that code which has made it the better code of the two rugby codes. League sucks union is better, i am sure my Tasman friends can agree! :D So a man who has raised the profile of the Wallabies would be a natural choice to head the APL.

pheeeew 38 degrees in Perth, i am melting!!! :D

Glorious & others,

Would you rather John O'Neill the most ... or can you think of anyone else (if it were possible) that would do a better job for various reasons? I'd like to hear what you think.

Well he doesn't have to be a football person doesn't he? Look at what has happened at South Melbourne, yes they had past greats in the board but they were only thinking about the Greek population and not to be a better club in the NSL and take charge and be a Man-U or Arsenal of the NSL, but now they have a former AFL club CEO and are looking very strong. O'Niell has raised the profile of the Wallabies and Rugby Union in general from a semi pro hardly watched game to a popular sport that many many Australians now enjoy. It has taken 20 years to do it but i see the same in the APL to be honest. With a Lowy, an O'Niell, A Tana and others setting the foundations right then it will be just as successful as football in Europe.

But if we wanted a football only man for the job, who do we choose? They have all ran the code into the ground and they were under one banner which did more damage than good, SOCCER AUSTRALIA.
