Lets be real here....Zidane is out of this world with the football skills he has, but even he would acknowledge that there were players that played better this year than him...just goes to show that Fifa can't do anything right....(and yes, I know coaches make the votes here, but who decides to let coaches vote??? Hmmmm Sepp Blatter???)
Whatever...and now to the REAL award that footballers have been wanting and has been shared with the likes of DiStefano, Cryuff, Rossi and Plattini....the Golden Ball....
....here I'm certain Nedved will win.

Golden ball
1993 Roberto BAGGIO
1994 Hristo STOITCHKOV
1995 George WEAH
1996 Matthias SAMMER
1997 RONALDO
1998 Zinedine ZIDANE
1999 RIVALDO
2000 Luis FIGO
2001 Michael OWEN
2002 RONALDO
FIFA WORLD PLAYER
1993 Baggio
1994 Romario
1995 Weah
1996 Ronaldo
1997 Ronaldo
1998 Zidane
1999 Rivaldo
2000 Zidane
2001 Figo
2002 Ronaldo
2001 - Owen winner!!!
1996 - Matthias SAMMER winner the year that Ronaldo was the best player in the world with many difference
1994 - STOITCHKOV intead of Romario. What a joke!!!
Anyway, not to many diference between the two throphies. But this year the FIFA WORLD PLAYERS isn't valid because Zidane has won.
Sorry, but Zidane is the best player in the world with many diference.
Maybe the jounalists of France football will listen this year the weepings of the italian Journalists, and they vote for Nedved. But Zidane is much best player than Nedved.
One question, How old is Nedved? How many top 3 GB or FWP in the last years? Maybe none. Is strange that a "great player", that play in a very big team like Juventus, hasn't any top 3.
Maybe in the previous years, the italian journalists didn't cry enough. Or maybe Zidane played in Italy and they saw very clear that Zidane was the best player.

For his performances with club and country, I'd give Celtic's Henrik Larson the nod. He dominated SPL, took Celtic to the UEFA final and had a pretty darn good outing in WC02. Just my thoughts.

Comme, who should vote on the world player of the year if the coaches are suspect in their knowledge? Journalists, are they better judges? Are fans more knowlegeable?
Every thread that discusses this topic shows just how varied the opinions are, and how few people agree completely. Seems that on these boards Nedved gets a slight edge, but I’m not convinced BS posters are any more knowledgeable than National Team coaches (nor less).
What would be the ideal mechanism to judge a winner?
France Football’s Ballon D’Or has pedigree, but is not open to fans such as us…..is this a better system? Plus, Le Ballon D'Or deals with players plying their trade in Europe….is the winner the defacto “World” player of the year?
In non-WC and national continental championship years the winners are always subject to greater debate and personal preference. What seems like a "strange" vote to some is not necessarily an indication of lack of football knowledge, just a personal choice.
I don't view FIFA's system as any worse than any other existing to date (nor any better). It is what is it...a beauty contest.
Maybe only active players should decide?
For what its worth, my top 3 WPY candidates for ’03 (in no particular order) would have been – Nedved, Tevez, R.Carlos.

MadridForever, your obviously too biased to have an intelligient discussion. But I will just say this. Pavel Nedved has played better for Juve in his 2 and a half years at Juve than Zidane in his 5 years in Turin. Nedved has won 2 scudetto with Juve in 2 years. Zidane won 2 in 5 years. Nedved also won a scudetto at Lazio. Nedved has been more influential to Juve than Zidane ever was. Whereas Nedved scores and sets up almost all of Juve's goals. Zidane was more of a luxury to Juve rather than an essential component. He would make all the fancy twists and turns. But he would rarely be decisive to victory for Juve.
I see you are very dismissive of Stoitchkov and Sammer. You obviously have a short memory. Come back to me when you have done some research on why they won those awards.

tpmazembe, the simple answer for who should give the award is, me. There is no perfect system for choosing the winner, some years it is obvious, some years it isn't but there always seem to be joke nominations.
Morientes hardly played a game for Real Madrid and yet received more points than Nesta or Makaay.
Prso, Daiki, Hassan, Masi are surely not of this calibre.
What annoys me most though is the number of votes which seem to be given on reputation alone. It's as if some coaches simply look who did well last year and follow suit.
Real Madrid only just won their league last season, were elimiated in the semis of the CL and yet still had 6 players in the top 11.
I tend to find the world soccer award fairly accurate although even that is often flawed.
My top 3 would have been Nesta, Nedved and Maldini, but then I myself am biased towards Milan. Henry, Makaay, Vieri, Van Nistelrooy were all strong contenders.

How can you honestly choose who is the better player from Ronaldo, Raul and Henry? They are all *#*#*#*#ing brilliant; end of conversation. I hate the world player awards, they mean nothing. Then you get people crapping their pantsasking why thisplayer wasnt nominated, and why that player wasnt...its all gay. When players are so good they are winning world cups and Champions League medals regularly, they are brilliant, and choosing between them is as worthwhile as trying to get a Frenchman to defend his country¬!

Maybe it's imposible to play well in Juve, Henry had to leave Juve and italy to demostrate that he is a extraordinary player. You don't see the real talent of the players in Italy, they give to much importance to the tactics and to the defense. The creatives players with talent are like in a jail. And it isn't my opinion, it is the opinion of many talent players that play in Italy.
This is the reason of that many players don't want to play in italy. If you see the top 15 of the FWP, only 4 players play in Italy, and only 2 creative players - Nedved and Schevchenko. Henry, Zidane, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Pablo Aimar,Raul, Michael Ballack aren't playing in italy.
But that is other debate.
Zidane has won with Real Madrid la liga, Champions league, Intercontinental Cup and European supercup. It is impossible to win more throphies with a club. Nedved still hasn't won a champions league, and Juve hasn't won a champion league since 8-9 years ago. Many of the hype of the Juventus is because they won RM, when RM seemed the clear favorite after play great against Manchester and after the horrible last 4-5 years of the italian teams losing many times in the first rounds. They won RM not the CL. And a RM with Ronaldo injured, without Makelele and without Raul or with Raul injured.
Your are wrong about Stoitchkov and Sammer. They were great players. I only has said that Ronaldo of the year 96 was much better player than Sammer. Ronaldo in the 96 was amazing, i have a very good memory. And Romario has been one of the players with more pure talent of the last 10 years, he was better player than Stoitchkov. It is like when i say that Zidane is best player than Nedved, i'm not saying that he is a bad players. He is worse player than Zidane that in my opinion is the best player in the world. He can do thinks in the field that any other player in the world can do.
And all of this is because some people say that the manager of Nt are "i d i o t s", and they don't know anything about soccer because they have chosen Zidane as the best player in the world.
And the journalist of french football are the best because probably they will choose Nedved. But as i said before in the last 10 years i'm more agree with the players that have won the FWP than with the players that has won the Golden Ball. But both are very prestigious awards. I prefer managers inteads of journalist but .....
