Matthaeus to coach Hungary

Lothar Matthaeus was named as Hungary's new national team coach on Sunday following his surprise resignation from Partizan Belgrade. The Hungarian Football Association made the announcement on Sunday, with Matthaeus signing a two-year contract covering the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

The 43-year-old, who was capped 150 times for West Germany and Germany, quit Partizan on Saturday after just a year in charge at the Serbia and Montenegro club citing personal reasons.

He replaces Imre Gellei who stepped down earlier this month after Hungary's disappointing Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. Gellei steered Hungary to just seven wins in 23 games, losing 12.

German media had reported that Matthaeus wanted to live in Budapest as his new wife, a Serbian businesswoman he married last month, has a business in Hungary.

Hungary are drawn in Group Eight for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers with Sweden, Bulgaria, Croatia, Malta and Iceland.

Can't stand the guy personally, but let's see what happens ... It's about time Hungary gets back into a World Cup Final already.

Translation of the Hungarian:
Dear Hungarian soccer fans!

I am very happy that the Hungarian Soccer Association (MLSZ) have chosen me to be the manager of Hungarian National Team!

I promise to devote all my energy and ability to helping Hungary qualify for the 2006 World Cup in my native Germany!

More Hungarian-language sections will be added to the webpage before the holidays.

Merry Christmas Hungary!

Lothar Matthaeus

I like the style of his website, even if he appears to be an egomaniac.

Appears to be an egomanic... Appearances can be deceiving, though in this case they don't even tell half the story.

There is one plus: having a German coach when the tournament is going to be held in Germany. Certainly, the media will be rooting for Hungary until Matthias does something stupid. What about language with players. Hungarian is an unlearnable language, it is not related to anything. Do most players speak German? Or will Matthias depend on German Legionnaires to translate?

Wir kehren wieder mal in Berlin zuruck: Die Ungarischer Hussars des Fussballs.

I don't really know what that means.

As far as I know, language shouldn't be much of a problem, as German is kind of the second language in Hungary. As much as I dislike Lothar, this should be good for Hungary. But with his constantly shifting allegiances, it wouldn't surprise me if he's gone somewhere else before 2006.
Don't know if this has been posted here yet, but Fehér Miklós of Benfica died this week of heart failure. Matthäus described him as part of the backbone on which he would build the new Hungarian side. Sad, very sad, as he was only 24 years old.

Matthäus was a great player, everyone knows.

But I think he is underestimated as a coach.

He did a good job with Partizan, beat Newcastle to reach the Championsleage. And they get 3 points out of that group only one less than Marseille.

The Only important thing here is for Hungary to qualify to the WC, if it does Lothar will be a hero and will see him thru the WC in his homeland, I am sure that ambition is a driving force for him

Hungary will not qualify for the World Cup with Lothar in charge. When he coached Vienna he blew it and he left Partizan when the damage he did there was still minimal .Let’s face it: He is too much of an idiot to coach anyone !

Magyar Football will not save itself with the appointment of Mattheus. I think the man is all Ego.

Magyar Football has other problems than National Team performance. First and foremost, kids do not play in the street like they once did. They do not have an organized machine that produces talent like the Dutch, the Spanish, or Italians. They have always relied on street football and the working class for talent.

It will be interesting to see what he can do, but I am not banking on the Magyars returning to World Cup play anytime soon.

They just do not have the mental strength to finish the big games. Their attempts at WCQ and Euro 2004 are examples of this. They lost their place in the last 2 games.

Where is the Arany Csapat?

There is a lot of talent in Hungary but like in many other Eastern European countries they don't quite play up to their possibilities.
