View Full Version : Is it time to replace Gansler?

I think it is at the very least time to start weighing our options. Truth be told, I wouldn't object to replacing him after the season. Its time to try something else, Bunker Ball is getting old. Hey that's fitting since our team is so frickin' old too!

Yes, it is time for bob to exit, and hell, lets toss Curt Johnson in there as well.

Right, Bunker ball...
I wished they went into a shell from the get go last night since Vermes and Brunt aren't going to handle any one running at them. I thought I was watching a Ron Newman squad last night.
Contrast this mood to the last home match, 2-1 over SJ with the Wizards taking it at them. They were the better and more attractive side and it could have been a larger win with better finishing. If you compare the lineups, I think you can see the real difference.
This lynchmob against Gansler is really based on 3 matches. That's par for the course in the Brazilian league, but hopefully not here. Admittedly, a poor showing in the playoffs and a loss in Milwaukee would make you start thinking though.

Yes Mcginty you are right but we have not seen these results run together. We saw them every once in a while in the beginning of the season but we would always bounce back. Now they are having a more prolonged brainfart and it scares me cuss no one cares. If they do they don't show it. I am getting the feeling like its no big deal after I read quotes in the paper on the same crap over and over. "Oh we just weren't prepared for this match". Or "we never had our head in it." Giver me a break this kinda falls off on the coach. Does it not?

Jees... already talks of firing Bob? At least wait for a USOC loss, a CCC exit and an early playoff series loss before you start to question his ability to do the job. This guy won the Cup his first full year as coach here, did we forget that?
And about CJ? This guy has done wonders in terms of group ticket sales and getting some massive crowds to the games that had never been present before. IMO, this guy is just getting started in terms of turning this city into a good MLS city.

Nope, but what the hell has he done since? Subpar soccer soccer that is for sure. Boring? Sometimes.
I am fine with waiting till the end of the season but things need to change. People need to get there heads out and start coaching, as well a playing.

Okay, CJ can stay, but Bob needs to go. Granted we won the cup in his first full year, but what have we done since? We have had below par years the 2000 cup was a fluke. We had a healthly team, outstanding play from our goalie, tight tight defence and a forward up front. After that our forward retired, we sold our hendo and preki, tony's game fell off due to injury and our back line acted as if they didn't know each other. If bob was such a good coach why hasn't he pulled our team back together? Our back line still looks like we don't know anyone, our forwards refuse to play up front, and our players have no confidance in their ability. This is a coaching problem.

Unless we make some amazing run in the playoffs, I think its time for a change. Coaching is always a "what have you done lately" kind of thing. And lately (since 2000) we have been mediocre at best.

2000 a fluke? How? Not the most talent in the league, but it was pretty good, and I'm not surprised one bit that we won that year.
In terms of the "they aren't playing with emotion" or "we weren't into it" thing, a coach can only yell and scream for so long. In the end, its up to the players to decide if they want to play hard. And who knows if that's the real problem anyway.
All this talk reminds me of a couple quotes by the late John McKay (former USC and Tampa Bay coach)
"Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell, but she can't play football worth a damn."
"Intensity is a bunch of guys running really fast."
You get to know each other in the backline by playing together. That was the beauty of 2000. It was always Prideaux, Vermes, and Garcia. How many times has Klein or Armstrong had to fill in at fullback. Burns has played every backline position. I think Garcia and Talley have done a decent job.
The only forward we have that can possibly play even with the last defender is Igor. Armstrong and Fabbro like to receive the ball deeper, hold the ball, and either pass or turn. Igor likes to start behind the other forward and move to receive a pass in space. Sounds alot like Alan Smith and Paul Merson to me.

I think you are all Nuts. You don't fire either of them. We need continuity here in the GM and Head Coach positions if we are to build this franchise up. We are onlyl 1 1/2 years removed from a Championship and 3 weeks removed from a pretty good streak of winning. We have hit rough times these last three games but look at the god awful schedule they have played in such a short time. You have to consider that they players are mentally and physically run down by now. Curt has done an outstanding job IMO.

Don't fire either Gansler or Johnson.
Personally, I'm not even considering the notion. But for those that are, ask yourselves who you'll be ABLE to get to come in and do their jobs. And ask yourselves if CJ's replacement will maintain as good a relationship with the supporters as Curt does.
Am I disappointed in the team's curent form? Hell yes. Do I think that form will magically change with a new coach and gm? No, not for one minute. So what will change?

In 2000 we were healthy. This year we've had injuries and illness. The team on the field has had little continuity. The players all getting sick in Mexico couldn't have happened at a worse time. With four straight weeks of travel and midweek games, that's no way to get healthy. That's a recipe for disaster.
It's all about results down the line. If we win the USOC or make it pass the first round of the MLS playoffs, I'd be willing to give Gansler another year.
If we crap out of both, then I wouldn't be surprised to see him go. Zambrano is the one that said "every coach keeps one bag packed" this week.

For those of you saying "We won it in 200, but what the hell have we done since?" Well we've had one crappy season and a pretty damn good season. In 2001 we lost most of the key players from 2000, blame CJ for that, what the hell was Bob supposed to do? I'd consider this season a pretty big success, we started off not too great, but we really turned it around and was probably the best team in the league for a number of games. So what, we hit a bad streak of about 3 games, whooopdy doo, and you want him fired for it? We are a mere 7 points out of first place, and if we win just one game, we're fourth in the league. Put us in the East and are you going to be calling for someone's head when you are in good position to win the division?
As far as I'm concerned, you guys are all over-reacting quite a bit, subtract the last few games and this season is a success. C'mon, we have 8 ties and the rest of the league has like 3 or 4, that's kind of distorted our true league positioning a bit don't ya think? We have 32 points right now, subtract those 8 tie points, and we have 24 points, then replay those games and we have anywhere from 24-48 points, 24 points is good enough for the playoffs, and 48 points is good enough to win the league.
Remember the 2000 Raiders? They lost like 12 games by 3 points or less, that's pretty much a tie in soccer terms. The only bad team we've tied was DC in DC a few weeks ago. We're so close to breaking over the hump, just like the raiders did the next season in getting to the AFC championship game. Hanging around with your opponents is a good thing in the developmental process, we just have to get that one goal more per game and we're golden. Depending on how you look at it, there's like 4-5 starters left over from 2000, that's a tough rebuilding process. 2001 was a bump in the road in that rebuilding process, but 2002 has been a pretty good step in the right direction with Diego, Dario, Igor, and Armstrong. Keep those guys around, and we're gonna be great if we can stay healthy.
And for those of you who are thinking this is an unexpected slump, look at this thread, http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8525 . C"MON!!! We've been playing 3 games a week for over a month and during this 17 games in 60 days stretch, we're at .500 which is good considering the stress this team has been through. I'll pull a quote from that thread talking about our position 13 games into the 17 game stretch....
5-5-3 ain't so bad. We're technically batting .500 which isn't good, but it isn't bad. But considering we're doing that against Randy Johnson throwing 300 mph pitches right at your head while the ump is calling them strikes during Hurricane Andrew while wearing a blindfold and midgets humping your legs, yeah.... I think we're doing rather well.
As far as I'm concerned, there's only about 3 coaches in this league who are safe if Gansler is about to be on the chopping block. Look at the standings... Yallop, Bradley, and Jeffries as far as I'm concerned are the only ones who have proven more this season than Gansler. So besides those three, if Gansler's gone, so should everyone else.
Lay off of them, wait until the season is a least over, you guys are acting like spoiled babies.

Well if I remember right it was both Bob and CJ decision to trade preki and Hendo. So you can't spat that out there.
Derek it not that we lost it is in the way we lost. Hello do not get it, it is one thing to lose a game but another to thrashed game after game . If you would go to the games you would know that! ;)
I agree please don't fire CJ. Sure his has made some mistakes on the trade end. On the business side he has done wonders. no reason to get fired as well. Unless Lamar considers those to attached.

Talking about firing Curt Johnson is just silly.
Talking about firing Gansler is fair game. Injuries or no injuries, there's been some piss-poor crap out there. We get killed by teams with a lot of speed because it doesn't seem to be a huge priority for Bob.
Don't forget...he won an A-League title in Milwaukee that was, well, comparable in style to the one in KC (though by all accounts uglier), then was out the door two years later.

I think it's fair to say that if someone had a better idea than Gansler, I'd love to hear it. Until then, I don't think he's bad, but the team just seems to have gone a bit stale.

Yeah, who do we replace Gansler with if we do fire him? Dave Dir? That's about it that's out there unless we want to go overseas to get a coach.
