I know everyone has something to say when their favorite team is not scheduled to air, but I am blown away that the Roma-Bordeaux game is not being shown on Setanta or ESPN Deportes when first place in the group is up for grabs. How is Basel-Sporting a more attractive game when absolutely nothing is at stake in this game as far as the CL is concerned. This goes back to Setanta's focus on Portugese teams, which makes no sense given the fact that there is enough quality in the sides to usually make it out of the group but rarely enough to make it past the next round in recent years (minus the Porto's winning side a few years back). I might be missing something in terms of immigrant demographics in the US but I don't get the sense that the quantity of Portugese immigrants (and Portugese football-watching immigrants) is greater than the quantity of French and/or Italian football-watching immigrants.
EDIT: Just noticed SA's note about ESPN Deportes delayed games. I hope this one falls into that category. Either way, the comment still stands re: Setanta's picks.

Actually you're under-selling that match. Qualification to the next round is up for grabs when Bordeaux travel to Rome. Not just first place in the group (which is pretty meaningless).
Oh well, clearly the importance of the match is not considered when these games are picked or else Panathinaikos v Anorthosis would be shown live instead of the PSV v Liverpool snorefest.

I guess Setanta does have sales evidence that they can do well with Portuguese teams, in both the domestic league and Europe (ESPN also has U.S. internet rights to the league).
Beyond that, yeah, it is mostly based on ratings (plus PPV sales for Celtic/Rangers games not against the EPL teams, which I think Setanta probably makes a deal with ESPN to lock up).

If you want Roma-Bordeaux, you can watch it live at UEFA.com. $7.95 pay-per-view.

Setanta actively sells subscriptions to Portugese restaurants and clubs in the U.S. and Canada, but does NOT have a similar business covering Italian or Afro-French communities in the U.S. and Canada.
FYI: Italian immigrants as a group don't do much business with Setanta, while French League teams tends to attract mostly French-speaking immigrants from Africa. The French-speaking natives in Quebec are mostly ice hockey fans (Montreal Canadiens 24/7/365) and don't care about French Ligue 1.

I am already paying a small fortune for Setanta, En Espanol, and the sports pack on DirecTV so PPV is not an option for me. I can just get a DVD via ftp from another collector, so the issue is more about seeing games that matter rather than seeing my favorite team. In this case, seeing a game that matters in terms of moving onto the next round and seeing my favorite team is one and the same. If Roma had already qualified or been eliminated then I wouldn't say anything about the game not being shown in the US because I think the networks will (A) show games that garner more viewers (EPL sides) and then (B) show the games that matter relative to advancing to the next round. In this case, Sporting-Basel fits neither of those criteria. Take care.

You are definately not biased. I was looking forward to that, and Inter's for the implications.
Unfortunately my team cannot effect their position despite playing against the team that guarantees they are on TV.

I sure hope this is wrong, it is ridiculous to not show by far the most important match of the week. Is there any chance ESPN will change their minds?

Actually Panathinaikos v Anorthosis is the most important match of the week because the loser of that match definitely goes home..

It is unfortunate the biggest games aren't on live (or in one case, at all), but I can't fault the business logic behind the decisions.
Liverpool vs anyone in any meaningless game will rank higher than a very vital game between middling French and Italian sides.
I'm disappointed, but I cannot say i'm surprised.

I don't know what the hell is going on at ESPN in Updating there tv listing latley, I don't know where you got your listing for ESPN2/ESPN360 for the CL as both Soccernet and ESPN international website does not have anything listed.
They usually update there schedule for the La Liga and Serie A matches there going to show on there international stations on either a Thursday or Friday but they never updated the information for weekend just gone and my EPG had the same information as there website which was wrong:mad:
