Congrats to Mainz, they have been awarded a place in the uefa cup for next season.
Well buh!
It was the first time that not the team that finished first in the fair-play statistics was choses to participate.
Hannover was first! ;)
How did the other countries handle this affair, did they take the club that got the fewest cards and wasn't qualified for a eurepean cup anyhow or did some weird ratings come into play as well like in Germany.
Well, nevertheless, I don't want to be nice to the away fans and carnival just isn't big here in Hannover.
Tough break...

UEFA Cup place....maybe we can attract some better calibre of players too
btw, Marko Rehmer is signing for Mainz :)
I guess it will add some experience to the side at least

According to UEFA.com the criteria include "positive play, respect of the opponent, respect of the referee, behaviour of the crowd and of team officials as well as cautions and dismissals."
But I would still be peeved if I were you.

I heard that he signed for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Yeah our fans behaved really bad most of time. Not!
You could make a case about "positive play". ;)
The rest is BS imo. Of course Mainz' fans very happy most of the time, they didn't expect anything.

Do you think the fact that Mainz was recently promoted has anything to do with it? Or that they have a really young coach? Or that they're celebrating their 100th birthday? I don't know, I'm just throwing out all the possibilities.

I believe the league wants to help Mainz get any new source of revenue they can get.
FSV Mainz is still a very small club and won't be able to compete at the top level for long without help.
They outworked quite a few clubs this season. That's only going to take them so far.
I actually think except for money-wise, this is going to hurt Mainz next season. I don't think they have enough good players to stand up through a Bundesliga season along with the UEFA Cup AND the German Cup.

I don't think that isn't the point, Keith, that would be ridicolous (by the DFL), cause in that case they would have replaced BMG a few years ago by a new fair team as well (as BMG is on of the Leagues Dinos)
I think , what counts is found here
According to UEFA.com the criteria include "positive play
Hannover played well in first half of the Season, the second half the literally sucked. Mainz played well even if the lost.
, respect of the opponent,
Mainz showed that , only one example, when BVB was guest in Mainz the Police Commisioner wanted HIGHER Security Forces for the cruel and violent BVB Fans. Mainz and their FanClubs told the Police they are nuts. Thats only ONE Example that Mainz showed respect to other teams. From Hannover I heard songs like "Ohne Schiri könnt ihr nicht gewinnen." (thats neither respectful against the opponents, NOR the referee.
respect of the referee,
See last point, I guess, DFL and UEFA included the behaviour of the Fans , as well as that of the Team.
behaviour of the crowd
opps, who can read has an advantage *G* You see, the Team can be fair , but if the Fans ain't that can be negative as well. And its only my oppinion (and I think BVB Fans are the greatest) Mainz fans behaved better than Hannover Fans (Lol we never can win here, as the Schalke Fans never can as we both wish us the worst :) )
and of team officials as well as cautions and dismissals."
This point is a draw at the team officials, cause Klopp and Zettel-Ewald and their staff both behave well (ohh I just saw, Klopp got the german Fair Play Price )
the last point is led by hannover
so ( only my oppionions )
Positive Play : 1:0 Mainz
Respect for the opponents 2:0
Respect for the Refs ( I take only the Team here) 2:1 Mainz
Behaviour of the Crowd 3:1 Mainz
Behaviour of coaches and Staff 3:1 Mainz
Cautions and Dismissals 3:2
If I compared it right Mainz won 3:2 (as I don't know how UEFA or DFL calculate the Fair Play coefficient, but it seems Mainz had a higher than Hannover

Aachen did really well last year, were within 15 minutes or so of eliminating Alkmaar.

ummm, yeaaaah, I take it you're joking right?? must be, 'cause without the schenanigans from league and club back around '02 Frankfurt shouldn't have even have got their license cause of all the financial irregularities. but somehow did. oh, there's definitely a fussballmafia alright...and suspicously/conviently headquarted over in gruene-saucetown. :)
but it's ok, you can come watch us play liverpool in your stadium... ;)

Harris, there's a difference here. Aachen got a direct UEFA Cup spot.
This drawing doesn't land Mainz in the UEFA Cup "proper". They are handed a spot in the first qualifying round. From then on, it's up to them.
According to UEFA.com, their first match will be next month (July).
So, Mainz will have to win a number of matches to even get into the UEFA Cup.
I think that will help them at the beginning of the BL season as they will be already match tested, but after the first five or six weeks, I think they'll begin to wear down.
If I were in charge there, I'd try to sign a couple more cheap free agent bodies just in case.

OH THAT'S A GOOD ONE!!! :D
Absolutely correct!! I didn't have any bad feelings about Eintracht until they were given that gift!!
And they were still caught cheating after that and suffered the three point deduction.

I didnt know that Liverpool had to play UEFA-Cup qualifier now, that really sucks for them... Oh well, as long as you keep it in your stadium I guess thats allright...
