Don't be afraid of the opener, I think Mainz tie or win, it's a derby for them.

No way they could win and they didnt - lost 4:2. 2 goals was actually a success. For virtually all players it was the first time they played in front of 44,000 people, actually for most players the first time in the top league. First time experience has happened, next time the nervous mistakes will not be made. Conor Casey came on in the 2nd half and was much better than Auer. As soon as he is fit, he will most likely play regularly.

Nice show made by Mainz. I enjoyed watching match. And if they´ll play like this but the mistakes they don´t have any problems to get maybe relegated.

Don't think the game was too good from the Mainz side. Found it great however that they managed 2 goals. Will give them confidence for the next matches.
One shouldn't forget that virtually ALL Mainz players played in front of 44,000 fans for the first time in their lives as well as a first in the top league. The 2 oldies in the team played 1 Bundesliga last in the 90's !!! I can imagine most of them their legs were shaking and you all know what it is like "the first time" !!! Guess noone will make the same mistakes again.
We'll see how they manage next week - it's back home, smaller stadium, own fans - this is the test. They still have 3 good injured players waiting.

I think Mainz deserve a big congratulations for their first ever win in the Bundesliga. They deserved it.

Conor Casey played very well against Aalen in Mainz's first DFB Pokal (Cup) round and scored twice and 3 assists. They won 5:2. His trainer was very pleased with him and he will most likely play from the beginning against Hertha Berlin tomorrow (Saturday). His trainer is very impressed with his quiet manner and his handling of the ball during the game.
About 2000 Mainz fans will be in the stadion amongst about 40-50000 Berlin fans. So lets cross our fingers around 3.30pm German time.

Mainz tied with Berlin (1:1). The game was very quiet, not much happening on either side in the 1st half. Bobic came in, scored the first goal and then the Mainz trainer was lucky, when he brought in Kramny in the 70. and he tied with a beautiful free kick shortly after. Casey played almost the 90 mins. Wasn't much to do up front. Mainz was happy with their away point. Next game is a home game against Bayer Leverkusen, who won against Bayern yesterday 4:1 (!!!!!) on the 11. September.

I sure do miss Mainz - a great town with great fans. So glad to see they finally made it to the first Bundesliga. Be sure to have dinner at the Eisgrub sometime and if you make it across the river, pick up a rack of Kasteler Dunkelbrau.
BTW, Fasching in Mainz is something to experience...
i used to live in mainz. love the Eisclub, as well as Irish pub right next to there. i think it was saturday morning brunch at Eisclub, loved going to that. glad to see 05 make it to the Bundesliga. it was off season when i was there (during WC2002), so i didn't get to see any games, but i heard a lot about the fans.

think it is time to put Mainz 05 up with the other "big" clubs. They are fourth, 4th, ahead of Bayern Munich and won on Saturday 2:0 against Bayer Leverkusen. Really great win. The little stadion was full with almost 20,000 fans all in red, all screaming their lungs out the whole 90 minutes. And it helped.
Conor Casey didn't play because he had 2 matches with the US team last week. His rival, Benjamin Auer, played for him and scored the 2nd goal. The first was scored by the other striker Nic Weiland. Guess those two will play next week. So far 6 different players have scored the 7 goals.
Next week they play in Bielefeld another team which landed in the top league last season together with Nürnberg. It will be hard to get the players down to reality after such a great game. This is probably also why the Leverkusen players lost, their minds were still on their win against Bayern Munich and thinking of their match against Real Madrid this week. They thought Mainz would be a "breeze", but as one sees they thought wrong.

Mainz 1 - Dortmund 1
BERLIN (AP) -- Benjamin Auer's 56th minute header gave Mainz 05 a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund Sunday and another reason to celebrate for the newly promoted club.
Auer, a former German youth star struggling to make it in the Bundesliga, beat Sebastian Kehl leaping on to a cross to level Czech forward Jan Koller's ninth minute score for Dortmund.
The draw spoiled Mainz's chance to climb to fourth ahead of Bayern Munich, but the tiny team has turned itself into a fan favorite in Germany with its open elation at being an unexpected fifth on the table.
"We can be happy with the point, we played well for 90 minutes against Dortmund," said Mainz coach Juergen Klopp.
"We gave up a stupid goal, but what can I tell my players _ that it's unfair that Jan Koller is 20 centimeters (eight inches) taller than anyone else?" he added of the towering Czech.

Mainz put on a good show against Dortmund. Fairly, one must say Dortmund had a lot of bad luck and even a regular 2:1 goal for them was cancelled for no apparent reason - one saw it on TV later, just some normal pulling of tops. I guess it's a bit of sympathy towards this underdog team. They have no respect towards the big teams, after all, they have nothing to lose.
Next Saturday, they play against another underdog, Freiburg, another team without a hugh stadion, without highly paid players and also a trainer who will remain anchored with Freiburg until HE wants to leave. Both trainers are teachers in the "real" life.

Sorry, but Juergen Klopp never was and never will be teacher!!!
He studied sport in Frankfurt and was a professional player in Mainz at the same time. (12 years)
But the story goes on - 1:2 win in Freiburg
UEFA Cup - wir kommen :-)

Mainz eye stadium revenue
Bundesliga new boys Mainz are looking to sell the naming rights to their Am Bruchweg stadium.
The club are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Wolfsburg and Hamburg, who both have their grounds sponsored.
Mainz president Harald Strutz has stated the club intends to cash in by having their stadium renamed.
"Our next task will be to sell the rights to our stadium name," said Strutz to SportBild.
"We are looking for a reliable partner ready to commit for several years."
