I'll keep my fingers crossed for them (despite my sympathy for Bruno Labbadia). You never know, they might be getting 3rd in the league and face BMG...;)

But seriously, I'm always gonna cheer for the underdog in the Cup (except when playing against my team).

According the article linked below from DFB.de, the 2009 U-19 German Championship Final Match will be shown this Sunday at 11AM CET on DFB Internet TV.

The match between the U-19 teams of Borussia Dortmund and 1. FSV Mainz 05 will be played at Mainz' Stadion am Bruchweg.

From what I can see on the site, access looks to be free of charge. However, I don't know if you can connect from outside Germany.

I really don't have time to investigate deeper.

EDIT: The link doesn't seem to work properly either. However, the story is on that page. Just look down a bit.

Congrats on Mainz' first German football championship of any kind!

FSV's U-19s won yesterday's match 2-1 over Borussia Dortmund and are the 2009 U-19 (A-Junioren) German Champions.

I actually think he is quite good. He is the captain of the Austrian national team and was quite good when playing for Panathinaikos in the CL. Good central midfield Mainz got themselves there.

Yes.

So "good" that Panathinaikos sent him away on loan.....

Come on man. If he was "quite good", he'd still be in Greece and not at a promoted German club.

c'mon Keith, you're always ruining our crappy teams hopes of getting decent players. (currently laughing at the Digao/sc freakin freiburg talk)

when we say things like "quite good" it means quite good for our teams like Mainz, Freiburg, etc...Teams like ours aren't going to get much better at the moment so to us those players are considered great transfers.

Andreas Ivanschitz is pretty good player no doubt.
Just because he doesn't sign for one of the big teams in Germany that doesn't mean he's less than quite good (don't forget, this is OUR STANDARDS)

a team like Mainz is a great chance for players like Ivanschitz to really step up their game and do i dare say...shine? possibly...move to a bigger club later?

we'll see what happens.

Dude, you have to look at this in the context of Austrian footballers. In that context, he is quite good and certainly good enough for Mainz but we'll see how he does this season.

I remember him playing against Bremen in the CL and he did very very well there.

No. I have to look at this in the context of GERMAN BUNDESLIGA PLAYERS!

Mainz is playing in the GERMAN Bundesliga, not the AUSTRIAN Bundesliga, aren't they?

What you're saying is tantamount to me calling Landon Donovan a "great player" in this league because he actually is "great" in the USA context.

But does that make him good enough to start for the club he was with here?

I think not.

This guy might be good enough for Mainz because they don't have the money to get anyone better, but as far as making a real impact in this league?

I doubt it.

I remember him playing against Bremen in the CL and he did very very well there.

I remember Rene Tretschok having several CL matches against big names and doing very, very, well.

It didn't change what he was. It just meant he had several very, very, good CL matches.

Karl-Heinz Riedle scored two goals in a CL Final. Did it make him one of Germany's "great" strikers???

No. He just had a very good night.

Come on man.

Well, I never called Ivanschitz great, nor do I think he is. I do think that he is a pretty good player though who joined the right club for his level of play. Players can always improve and develop further if the settings change, he is still 25 and hasn't reached his peak yet so I don't think its fair to conclude anything definitively about his quality.

Of course, I didn't reference his good CL performances as a guarantee of success and shining in the Bundesliga. What it does indicate though is that there is the possibility that he can carry that form into another league and even improve it. The opposite can happen and he can flop and be sold back to Austria.

Either way, there really is no reason to have an expanded discussion about a Mainz player, lol. I don't think we disagree on anything significant, I just probably think he is a slightly better player than you do.

Of course you are right about his potential to improve. However, I didn't say you called him "great" either. I was making a point.

You pointed to one CL match and used that as your basis for thinking this guy is a "pretty good" player. I simply tried to show you that many have had "good matches" and gone on to be nothing.

I didn't say he's crap, but I don't think he's "pretty good" for the Bundesliga either.

That is my opinion from what I have seen of him previously and what I think of his potential.

Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. He'll have this season to change that opinion.

And only now you present both sides of that story. You gave your side and I gave mine with examples. ;)

Sure there's a reason. We're on the Mainz thread! LOL!! :D

And I think you're right. I think I just rate him a bit lower than you do.

Like I said above, I don't think he's crap, but I don't think he's "a pretty good player" either.

I think he's somewhere in-between.

But again, he'll have this season to prove us right or wrong........

Pretty expensive loan transfer though (1 million is what I hear). So obviously, Pana still rates him. Decent enough player, but I really don't think he has the pace and ability to be an even good Bundesliga player. We'll have to see though.

Man, if they still "rated" him, not only would they have not loaned him out, they would not have given Mainz A BUY OPTION!

I agree with everything else you said.

Kicker is speculating in this article (http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/512282/artikel_Andersen-vor-der-Abloesung.html) that 1. FSV Mainz 05 is already going to fire coach Jörn Andersen after their upset loss in the German Cup to 4th Division club VfB Lübeck.

The article says it isn't just the Cup loss that put Andersen under pressure. The article speculates that like Jürgen Klinsmann last season at Bayern, Andersen doesn't have a good relationship with his team, who question his training methods.

They apparently also did not have a good pre-season.

Mainz has called a press conference for 3:30pm and training was canceled for the day.

Seeing that Klinsmann and Bayern just recently agreed to a buyout of Klinsmann's contract, I wonder if Klinsmann could be taking over at Mainz?

Hmmmmm......... ;)
