with all the respect, i doubt mainz will ever be a serious contender for the european spots in this league.
I disagree.
When they finally manage to build a new stadium with 30.000-40.000 seats, they will be competitive in the long run. If they can sell out every game they should also find a good sponsor to pay them some millions more. If they cant finance it on their own and dont get support by the state, they should and probably will ally with SV Wehen to build it in Hessen.
Actually, there is only one thing that can stop them, imho: SV Wehen is going to play in the 2. Bundesliga and is going to stay there or even get promoted within the next years, and the same could be true for SG Hoffenheim (there's a lot of €€ behind these clubs). Add Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe, Koblenz, Trier, Saarbrücken, Offenbach and Mannheim. Damn, it's getting crowded here...

yea i noticed that your stadium only hold 20,000 thats really tiny and alot of leagues in europe dont get many supporters at game. I was on espn and most portugese league games only have like 6,000 people.. which is crazy. Stadiums in colombia are like 20,000-50,000 and we have alot less people tho they arent always filled.. Are tickets just to expensive or something
o yea and sad soto got injured, keep me posted on what happened to him

According to Kicker (http://kicker.de/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/artikel/362017/) he suffered an Innenbandriß (couldnt figure out what that is in English, sorry) and will be out for 6 weeks.
Next week in Aachen will be hard without Soto and Andreasen.
Mainz could probably sell out their stadium with season tickets only if they wanted to. :D
Leverkusens stadium isnt much bigger (22.500 iirc) and they made it to the Champions League. Ok, they have Bayer pumping money into the team, but, hey, it shows that Mainz' stadium isnt as tiny as it seems.

Actually German attendances are really high, the highest in Europe, due in large fact to the cheapness of tickets.
And we're not counting the 2. Bundesliga teams that have usually high attendances, like 1860 Munchen, 1. FC Koeln, 1. FC Kaiserslautern (;)), MSV Duisburg, Hansa Rostock, Karlsruher SC, all teams that have about the same amount of attendance as Mainz. Many clubs in 1. Bundesliga have 40,000+ attendance average, off the top of my head, Bayern, Bremen, Hertha, Schalke, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Nurnberg, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Gladbach, and Hannover. Mainz's problem is that Mainz is not that big of a city, and that Frankfurt is nearby and a lot of the local population supports Eintracht Frankfurt. Also nearby is Kaiserslautern. Both of these teams have more reputation and history than Mainz (Mainz only reached the Bundesliga for the first time a few years ago).

since Freiburg isn't in 1st liga....Mainz is the best team in this league
so the fans supporting Frankfurt and FCK...i understand because these are both awesome teams, but glory to mighty Mainz!

I grew up in a village near Mainz and, yes, everyone there was either Eintracht or Lautern-Fan (mostly Kaiserslautern). 05-Fans were non-existent on both sides of father Rhine.
It's incredible, how fast this changed. When Mainz began playing attractive football in the carnival season of 2001 - when Jürgen Klopp became coach -, the attendance suddenly exploded.
I still have three tickets from season 98/99 (Stuttgarter Kickers, Unterhaching and Wattenscheid...) and I remember there were only a few thousand fans in the stadium, 5000 maybe. And today they sell out every game.
These fans didnt come out of nowhere - they are all former Lautern/Eintracht-supporters. So as long as 05 manages to stay in the 1. Budnesliga this isnt a problem, really.

I think in 2nd liga Mainz will still have that fanatical support...The attendances would be 12-16000 i think(ohwell, better than us at the moment  )
What probably happened with all the people in your area...Is they liked Mainz, but were Lautern of Eintracht fans because they wanted a big team to cheer for...Lautern being the biggest at the time was the obvious glory hunter choice!
but once Mainz started playing attractive football as you said and made their way up...I guess the people came to their senses and started to feel that home-pride.

I meant to post about this earlier. As someone posted already, Soto tore his MCL and will be out 6 weeks (can begin, according to the team, training in 4 weeks). He had surgery yesterday and according to the club it went very well.
Soto fell during a challange along the left sideline, at about our 18. The whole left side of the fanblock where I was standing held our breath as he lay there holding his knee, and you could tell he wasn't time wasting or acting. Coach Klopp spent the next 5 minutes looking very concerned, and only in the direction of Soto and the medical staff, instead of watching the game... I think that gives some indication into how important he feels Elkin is. In the press-conference after the game, Klopp lamented his injury and how quickly he's integrated himself into the team. It's a real shame.
It really sucks, because he was having another great game. He owned possesion on his side of the field. Our first goal was directly caused by Soto's hard shot from the left side that the FCN keeper couldn't hold, and all Zidan had to do was tap it in.
Soto's a really calming influence in midfield because he's so good on the ball, plus he wins almost every challenge and really fights hard defensively, which is unfortunately how he got injured. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery. The fans chanted his name for a long time as he limped off. Already he's becoming a favorite. (although perhaps not on the level of diety-hood that Zidan and Andreasen have also so quickly achieved).
Someone mentioned us not having tradition... we have lots of tradition--- in the 2.liga!! :) We were the team with the longest ever streak of not relegating or promoting from the 2.liga. Our stadium is small (20,300), but it was much smaller just 5 years ago. As I said, this is a small club, but it's sold out week in and week out, and the Bundeliga as a whole has the best attendance in Europe.
I haven't ever heard anyone seriously think that we could land in a European Cup spot. That's just completely unrealistic. We'll be quite happy to stay up. And if Eintracht goes down, then I'll be doubly pleased!

yea I hope he is back soon we need him for copa america which is in June we have a hard group Argentina, USA and Pargauay. Soto is the one of the key players in our midfield and basically scores every other game for us or at least has an assist. Hope he is ready in time and that our new coach keeps him in mind. He is very exciting to watch and adds alot of offensive power to our midfield, because he can score from 30 yards out.
tho knee injuries suck and basically are career ending.. hope his isnt a big deal because our best striker Juan Pablo Angel got a knee injury then it got infected and it killed his career, that or it takes a very long time to recover from. We have another exciting player Falcao Garcia from River Plate in Argentina he is very young and scored 7 goals in 5 games got injured and it took him a little over a year to regain his form but his injury was season ending, and when he returned it looked a little like he was afraid to get tackled.
hope you guys keep winning next game will be a little tough without 2 starters but that guy Zidan is amazing and hope he can get u some points and you guys stay up.
as for the stadiums its just werid because in colombia almost all stadiums are 40,000+.. their are a few that are 10,000-20000 but thats because they use to be 2nd divisons teams and are recently premoted. Its just werid because Colombia is like the 3rd or 4th best league in america after arg, brasil and mexico. I thought that in europe the stadiums would be bigger but think more people watch games on tv tho.

yeah i'm really bummed because, even if everything goes really well with his injury, he'll still need time to get his form back, ect. ect. And who knows how the rehab. will go.
most stadiums in Germany are much bigger than ours... ours is the smallest in the Bundesliga. Like you said about small stadiums only being for recently promoted clubs (we were only promoted for 04/05 for the first time ever)... we are a small club who had played for literally 100 yrs without ever playing in the 1.liga--- that's why our stadium is so small--- but it's a very cool stadium in that the majority of it is standing areas... so the atmophere is absolutely fantastic.
They are also planning a new 35,000 attendance stadium... but it's currently caught up in political infighting (whether the state will help out at all or whether the club must finance it completely).

Yeah, dude, I've been reading on the delays to the new stadium. That aside, I have always been impressed with the atmosphere during matches at the current one, before and after the expansion.

Zidan is incredible; very talented player. Has definitely got to be one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga. 7 goals in only 10 games played (7 starts is it?) out of 23 this season so far is very impressive to say the least. If he had been playing since the beginning of the season, I think he may have been top scorer of the league with a bit of a lead.;)
Can't believe Mainz was dead last in the league before the winter break with only one win and looking like they were going to get relegated. Since him, Soto, and Andreasen have joined, seems Mainz are a completely different club. Being unbeaten since the break has really been a surprise, and with that moving up to 10th place! Then again having Zidan in the squad. Werder Bremen must be kicking themselves right now.:D
Well done to Mainz in getting out of the relegation zone and good luck on the season. I reckon it's going to be a difficult task of holding on to Zidan when big clubs enter the picture. We could surely use someone like him at L'OM.:p

Keep your hands off our Mo' !! The big boys in Bremen had their chance and didn't appreciate him. Now he's back in Rheinhessen where he belongs.
It's funny how different players come into form in different settings. I'm sure if Zidan was a Yank-abroad (for example), people on that board would most likely be saying that he "sucks" cause he wasn't breaking through or scoring at Werder. :)

some teams are just dumb i remember in like 99 a colombia striker COngo from once caldas went to real madrid... he played 2 games scored in both and they never played him ever again they keep sending him to other teams and killed his career... it was a real shame because everytime he played a big team with the colombian national team he would score and he was argentinas best friend would always score on him but for some reason real madrid bought him played him he scored and then they never played him because they had Raul who they cant bench, Ronaldo who was the best player in teh world and Morientes at the time. Look real bought owen he was a sub every game and was their best striker, had the most goals and they still sold him and wouldnt start him... They have Cassano and Robinho and never use them !!! Some big clubs are just retarded and just straight up dont like players and wont start them
another colombian player Juan carlos toja who was a starter for our sub 20 2 years ago and was amazing went to River plate one of the best teams in argentina. PLayed 3 games 1st game scored 1 and had 1 assist, 2nd one had an assist and 3rd got a red card and then he was sent to the reserves and hasnt played since. Now he is in the MLS :( at dallas on loan which is sad because was on one of the best teams in SA and now in MLS haha
some players just arent liked for one reason or another and then again their are just some players you cant bench. In bremen isnt their Klose who is like germanys starting striker who scores 5 goals each WC... u cant bench a guy like that at club level same thing with Raul at real.

Congrats to Zidan, and to Mainz on their progress. Here's hoping for many more where that came from. So happy to see Zidan starting and getting a chance to produce. He's such an exciting player, it will be nice to see him get the recognition he deserves.

Hey Mainz Supporters,
I am in Germany this week and I want to catch a football match. I am at a trade show in Frankfurt - and Mainz is home. The stadium looks very cool, and, they are playing my "host company's" home team, Bielefeld. So - how hard is it to walk up and get tickets on Saturday afternoon? I'm thinking of just taking the S-Bahn down to Mainz from my hotel in Frankfurt.
Thanks!

Sorry, but in all probability, impossible to get tickets.
