Well this offseason should be exciting for us, because this board will have its first round of youth promotions!

One catch all thread should do the trick.

So the question is, who?

We already have Tristan Bowen. Luckily, our brave trailblazer will be getting action in NZ friendlies with LAG, and we should get some initial reports.

But where else should we look?

I think we will know better following the U-18 mega camp that will include many MLS youths, but here is the little bit I can add:

New York: This seems quite obvious. Matt Kassell was TDS' freshman of the year, and almost got a call up before the season. Plus, NY is in need of an AM. Would be a top five draft pick, but NY should snap him up once the signing period opens. Only thing stopping that would be if Europe came calling, and that would really make NY look stupid (and maybe call attention to MLS' guidelines).

Obviously second call ups aren't too likely, but we can't completely overlook them. Hines and Exantus (though his status seem strange) are also respectable players. However, the man to watch is John Agudelo, who has been performing very well with the U-17's. He has the inside track to be NY's 2010 promotion.

Chicago: Ian Christiansen is the most prominent player in their system. Tall, skilled midfielder. He has the size to make the leap. Chicago probably has other options as well with a talented academy; Ian is the name that comes to mind though. I wouldn't be surprised to see them call someone up.

RSL: Not an illustrious youth program, but they did win the youth academy tournament behind the 7 goals of James Rogers. Rogers may be too short however. If they do make a call, I would still suspect it to be him.

DC: DC's top two players seem to be their U-17 defenders Arjona and Phillips. They will be getting looks following the World Cup. However, Travis Pittman has been making a name. Chris Hegni (sp?) and Shane Cooke (sp?) have also been bandied about. DC surely will promote in 2010, and maybe this upcoming season as well.

Dallas: They have plenty of fantastic players. With the 18's, Josh Hernandez and London Woodberry. The better team, however, are the 16's. Bryan Leyva and Robert Luna are both future stars, while there is one name I forget a friend mentioned (starts with a B...). Unfortunately, if that rule about an Academy needing to be two years old is still around, we might never see these players in the league.

LAG: Tristan Bowen

Chivas USA: Their best player I heard was Mario Ledezma, but he signed with the mothership. Supposedly they will be looking at other members however, and I have a gut feeling they choose someone (and I bet he is Latino.....).

Houston: There were four names last year that were mentioned with Houston, and supposedly they were challenging the one player rule. I wouldn't be surprised if they did make a call, especially considering how they are aging.

Columbus: They are in a very intriguing situation. They have the rights on a lot of talent. One player, Michael Green I believe, played very well with UNM. He might get a call. However, they have a couple of younger players. I believe Ben Speas is under the columbus umbrella, and Brian Span I know is. They have the players, and I bet they at least approach one or more about the possibility.

I don't know much about the other teams, and this is just basics. But if anyone has any info to share, I'd be most grateful. Cheers!

At the MLS U-16 Academy tournament in Commerce City, CO, Pittman was a very dominant player. Maybe the tournament best. His aggressive play reminded me of the style of former MLS player, R.T. Moore. R.T. was a very good player who left MLS to follow in his father's foosteps. R.T. is now a dentist!

I would like to see a couple more teams take the risk and move a player up. With the 4 dedicated developmental roster spots, I could see this being more likely. Although I am concerned about the precedence set by Chivas taking developmental players from Chivas USA. I'm not surprised, but if Chivas picks out all of Chivas USA's top talent that could become a problem for the club as other teams programs mature and produce and field a higher level of talent.

Benji Saenz and Blake Shannon played in a reserve team game for Houston last year. Maybe one of those two will be in the league in the next few years.

The sad part is most of the Chivas USA youth player's parents don't have hopes to see their child play in MLS for Chivas USA but to Guadalajara. I have always lashed out at Chivas USA for that.

Ugh that is so twisted. MLS needs to step in here. We can't have Chivas USA as a friggin farm team for Chivas, especially considering if they do uproot serious US talent we are going to lose them for the national team as well. MLS needs to say if you take these players, you have to go through the MLS just like a regular transfer, and then they can say no to the deals.

Yeah, and no rumblings of anyone else. DG talked about changing the rules when talking about Vancouver's residency, so I'm hopeful that we'll see a change over the offseason and teams more willing to call up players. FCD in particular seems to have talent that the league could utilize. I've also heard a bit about an African DC player who shined against Real.

I wish MLS would find ways to promote some of these players. A weekly MLSnet little video featuring a youth player or the like.

African name, and I didn't want to say African American because that has different connotations. But yes, I think he is an American recently moved from Africa.

Chivas just signed Mexican-American midfielder Cesar Zamora to a contract. He should be better than his DA stats advertise. He has played 19 games, and only tallied once. A guy to watch for them is Bryan De La Fuente. He is playing on the U-18 team and is 16. He has scored 12 goals in 21 games.

Well that makes three, and this is the first one since the rule changes. Flores and Mayen were through some other mysterious process that doesn't really count.

Anyways, it will be interesting to see who makes their first MLS debut (Bowen got a USOC look I believe). Also, we should have more coming soon. With the Oduro trade, I suspect either Duka or Exantus will get a deal in NY. If Duka gets a deal, he'll probably beat Deric, Bowen, and Zamora to the field.

The African kid who apparently played well for DCU against RM was Iyassu Bekele. He just turned 17 a couple weeks ago.
