View Full Version : What's in YOUR wallet?

After using the standard issue yellow and red cards and plastic book for 4 years, I switched to write on cards this fall. For the most part, they serve me well until there is any moisture involved. Frustrating when you are trying to get the ball back into play to have to be messing around trying to get your sharpie to write.
What do you carry, if not the standard vinyl book with paper inserts and where did you find it?

I always have a second set of cards in my left breast pocket, and a $0.99 CVS notebook in my right. Don't take the example from NASA, and spend a ridiculous amount of money on a pen that writes upside down, in the rain, in zero gravity. I use a pencil. I'm a write-on card guy for cards, and then goals go in the notebook. 2 sharpees and 3 pencils, and I should be able to get through a game. If it's lightly raining, I take a piece of paper out of the notebook and put it between the 2 back-up cards in my left pocket. If it is downpouring, and you ARE a write-on card person, the cards come in a neat little clear plastic sleeve, and I put my little notebook in there, and turn the sleeve upside down in my pocket so water can't leak in over the top. It always comes out bone dry. If you're not a write-on card person, use an extra card or a piece of plastic and put a piece of white medical tape on it. You should be able to write on that tape with a pencil or marker, no matter how hard it is raining.
I met 1 guy who keeps his blackberry in his pocket, and then just keeps the game record as a document file that he keeps updating. I think that might be a little excessive, though.

I keep a fold up wallet with yellow and red cards on either side in my left pocket, and fill it with scrap paper that I tear in to suitable sizes, and a pencil attached to it. I record all goals in there, and keep a separate write-on yellow in my front shorts pocket and red in my rear. I use click pens and keep one tucked in to each of my front shorts pocket, and prefer to write straight on the card. IMO, struggling with getting a card out of a pocket or with writing on a cold day is not just unseemly, but could hurt game management, so I try to make ease of access a priority.

Capital One credit card. Doesn't everyone?
;)
Seriously, I use the write on cards with a fine point Sharpie. I also make it a point to have the imprinted side of the card face away from my body to prevent perspiration from getting the card surface wet.

I picked up a leather 3x5 flip pad at Office Max that I use for my "wallet". It has a pen/pencil slot, a slight pocket in the back and a 3/4 pocket in the front where I keep cards that I never use :). For writing, I just take a blank 3x5 index card and let it float in there. A bit large, but much more robust then the standard issue wallets out there. I'll take a picture and post it when I get a chance.

I use the write on cards just for showing purpose.
I carry my yellow card and a index card in my front pocket. I use the index card to keep track of the teams/score/cautions/ejections. I don't carry a wallet any more.

Olympus cordura wallet with red and yellow cards.
Home made write on cards based on the Referee's Little Black Book printed on photo paper. Not waterproof, but water-resistant. Use a medium sharpie - fine and ultra don't really work when it's wet and/or cold.
Spare sharpie in other pocket.

I like to use the OSI side loader wallet with neon cards (w/pencil holder). Inside I use forms printed on "write-in-the-rain" paper (I get 250 sheet reems) and I make the froms in MS Excell. My form is something like the Brian Hall score pad - I use the mini #2 pencils with erasers sold by OSI - and I keep a red card in my upper right breast pocket and a yellow card in my right front shorts pocket.

I used to think write-on-cards were the best thing since sliced bread. Now, I don't have any use for them.

It's interesting that you brought this up. I'm curious as to why you don't use them anymore, but as think back on my season, I'm recalling many times where I pulled out the "write-on" card just to put it back in my pocket and note the misconduct in my paper notebook. Usually I think it's because I forget to write the team names and colors on the card before the game, and I don't feel like taking the time to do it during a stoppage. I have used write-on's since I started refereeing, and have only noticed this trend with my habits recently.

I found a cordura (nylon) wallet similar to the traditional plastic wallets that many of us still use (www.thewhistleline.com). It is much more durable, and has a plastic insert on the inside to put you scoresheet behind and and write on the plastic with a marker. It also has card pockets on the outside. It's not waterproof, but does a better job than the traditional wallets most of us started with.

Exactly the one I use and refered to in my earlier post - I suspect I bought it on your recommendation actually!
Very good product, although the clear plastic pieces meant I had to modify my DIY Excel write-ons.

I'm intregued, how does it work?
Is there an insert over the pad that you write on with the marker? Need to use the alcohol to rub it off? Does it not just rub off itself when in your pocket?

Hmm, now I re-read the op about this wallet, I'm not sure a. it was described well or b. it is the same thing as the one I have, although it looks the same and that's where I got mine from.
On the inside, mine has two small, clear plastic tabs on either side to slide the scorecard behind to keep it in place. A pencil holder was on the right side, but I removed it as I use a sharpie stowed in my pocket and it got in the way.
I write directly on the card, not on a plastic overlay. I attach this to the rosters and referee report (if one is required). All goes into my big box o' referee game records.
