Starting June 29th, and ending on Augest 31st, we will have played 17 games, and competed in 3 competitions. The rest of the MLS has averaged 14 games, and that is accounting all the USOC games as well. "So what... 14 vs. 17 games, not that big of a deal". Yeah, whatever. I'd love to have 3 of those midweek games canceled and actually have some time to rest. The last time the Wizards have had more than 4 days off was between July 6th and the 13th, but that was following up playing two games in three days. Other than that, during this two month trip to hell, we've been playing a game every 3 or 4 days. Hell, I think I might be just about burnt out on soccer myself, and I'm not even the one playing.
Of those 17 games, only 7 are at home and we still have 5 more of those 17 left to play. So of those 12 games we've had about 11 different lineups I'd bet. We've missed games from Tony, we've missed games from Nick, we've missed a game from Preki, all becuase of 5 red cards. We've also gone through injury time for Diego, for Vermes, and for Fabbro. We've been screwed out of a key player in a huge game because of some Mexican's "accident", errrr.... incompetence. We will have flown back and forth across the country 5 times, including a trip down to Mexico for a midweek match and gone to 6 of the other 9 MLS cities. But worst of all, we've watched the Wizards show no heart at all and getting their heads kicked in by Chicago, Morelia, and Columbus.
But still, we've managed to go 5-5-3 during this hellish two month, 17 game, schedule congestion nightmare. We sat and watched Noel Kenny get kicked out of the MLS for the remainder of the season which was very, very sweet. We watched the Wizards finally win a game in Dallas. We watched the Wizards kill New England on national TV. We watched the Wizards come so close to beating San Jose in their home stadium, something that has yet to be done this season. We watched Tony do something that hasn't been done before by a MLS keeper, and that's saving two PK's in the same game (Though I think he also set anther record in getting two red cards, in one week, in two competitions.) But best of all, we watched the Wizards actually show some heart and make a stunning comeback and win against Rochester.
5-5-3 ain't so bad. We're technically batting .500 which isn't good, but it isn't bad. But considering we're doing that against Randy Johnson throwing 300 mph pitches right at your head while the ump is calling them strikes during Hurricane Andrew while wearing a blindfold and midgets humping your legs, yeah.... I think we're doing rather well.
Screw it, so we've gotten killed the last 3 games, we had some great wins prior to that. You gotta take the lows with the highs, you can't have it all. Hopefully when we goto LA on Wed. night, we can field an under 12 team, and rest everyone for the big game on Saturday up in the cheese state. We're in the playoffs, we're out of the shield race, we're out of the CCC, there's just one thing left to take care of, and that's getting to the semi's of the USOC, that's the only thing that matters up until the MLS playoffs roll around. I know we can do it, this team is more than capable enough of beating an A-league team. So let's get it done Bob.
