Well, I guess we're deep enough in the season to start this speculation, just looking at the teams below .500, so...let's get started (in no particular order):
NY Jets (4-7 going into tonight vs. Tennessee)- Herman Edwards gets the pass this year, partly based on the success of last season, partly due to Pennington's injury in the preseason. His job is probably safe, barring some horrendious collapse and a 4-12 finish.
Buffalo (5-7)- Gregg Williams went 3-13 and 8-8 thus far, but this season had Bills fans seriously thinking playoffs, and 9-7 is not going to do it this season in the AFC. A run might save his job, but anything worse than 8-8 would seal his fate.
Cleveland (4-8)- Technically in the AFC Central race still, but the record looks like a dissapointment after the first trip to the playoffs last season. Not sure about this one, but 7-9 and 8-8 should save Butch Davis' job. 6-10 or worse might not.
Pittsburgh (4-8)- Bill Cowher probably deserves the odd off season, and unless they finish 4-12 or 5-11, he's probably safe
Houston (5-7)- They've already improved on last season's 4-12 mark, and .500 is still a possibility, though the playoffs would take several miracles. Dom Capers is fine.
Jacksonville (3-9)- First year for Jack Del Rio, so he may get another year to turn it around, though anything worse than last season's 6-10 is going to be a dissapointment. He's safe for now.
Oakland (3-9)- You'd think that Bill Callahan would get a free pass since he took the Raiders to the Super Bowl last season, but then again, he DOES work for Al Davis, and he DID call the Raiders the "dumbest team in America" after their last loss. He's as good as gone, even if the Raiders win out.
San Diego (2-10)- Schottenheimer's gone, that's about all you have to say there.
NY Giants (4-8)- Still with a mathematical shot at the playoffs, though it's more in the realm of "acid trip" than "reality". Fassel's been on the brink just about every season, but this team was seriously thinking Super Bowl this year. Hell, I'M a Giants fan, and the way they're playing this year, 4-12 wouldn't surprise me. Fassel will get another job somewhere, but he's done with the Giants.
Washington (4-8)- This one is all on Spurrier, but I think he's finally learned that there's no 66-0 wins to be had in the NFL. He'll leave, but he won't get fired.
Chicago (5-7)- They're still in the NFC Central race, especially with the way that Minnesota's been playing lately. Dick Jauron needs at least .500 to save his job, I think.
Detroit (4-8)- Marriucci's in no danger this season, though I think they need 7-9 or better to keep people positive about the future there.
Tampa Bay (5-7)- Gruden took the Bucs to a Super Bowl title last year, so he's safe, but this has got to be a dissapointment.
Atlanta (2-10)- Dan Reeves was hurt a bit by Vick going down, but this was an awful season, and he's probably out come the end of the year.
San Fransisco (5-7)- Well, can anyone really say that the Niners are better off with Dennis Erickson as head coach? He'll be around next year, if only to avoid admitting they shouldn't have gotten rid of Marriucci to begin with.
Arizona (3-9)- The "black hole" of the NFL claims another coach. So long, Dave McGinnis.
So, by my count, here's what should be open come the end of the season:
Buffalo
Oakland
San Diego
NY Giants
Washington
Atlanta
Arizona
They weren't on this list, but Jim Haslett may be out in New Orleans too, especially if the Saints fold near the end again.
So, what do you all think about this?
