Well, I guess we're deep enough in the season to start this speculation, just looking at the teams below .500, so...let's get started (in no particular order):

NY Jets (4-7 going into tonight vs. Tennessee)- Herman Edwards gets the pass this year, partly based on the success of last season, partly due to Pennington's injury in the preseason. His job is probably safe, barring some horrendious collapse and a 4-12 finish.

Buffalo (5-7)- Gregg Williams went 3-13 and 8-8 thus far, but this season had Bills fans seriously thinking playoffs, and 9-7 is not going to do it this season in the AFC. A run might save his job, but anything worse than 8-8 would seal his fate.

Cleveland (4-8)- Technically in the AFC Central race still, but the record looks like a dissapointment after the first trip to the playoffs last season. Not sure about this one, but 7-9 and 8-8 should save Butch Davis' job. 6-10 or worse might not.

Pittsburgh (4-8)- Bill Cowher probably deserves the odd off season, and unless they finish 4-12 or 5-11, he's probably safe

Houston (5-7)- They've already improved on last season's 4-12 mark, and .500 is still a possibility, though the playoffs would take several miracles. Dom Capers is fine.

Jacksonville (3-9)- First year for Jack Del Rio, so he may get another year to turn it around, though anything worse than last season's 6-10 is going to be a dissapointment. He's safe for now.

Oakland (3-9)- You'd think that Bill Callahan would get a free pass since he took the Raiders to the Super Bowl last season, but then again, he DOES work for Al Davis, and he DID call the Raiders the "dumbest team in America" after their last loss. He's as good as gone, even if the Raiders win out.

San Diego (2-10)- Schottenheimer's gone, that's about all you have to say there.

NY Giants (4-8)- Still with a mathematical shot at the playoffs, though it's more in the realm of "acid trip" than "reality". Fassel's been on the brink just about every season, but this team was seriously thinking Super Bowl this year. Hell, I'M a Giants fan, and the way they're playing this year, 4-12 wouldn't surprise me. Fassel will get another job somewhere, but he's done with the Giants.

Washington (4-8)- This one is all on Spurrier, but I think he's finally learned that there's no 66-0 wins to be had in the NFL. He'll leave, but he won't get fired.

Chicago (5-7)- They're still in the NFC Central race, especially with the way that Minnesota's been playing lately. Dick Jauron needs at least .500 to save his job, I think.

Detroit (4-8)- Marriucci's in no danger this season, though I think they need 7-9 or better to keep people positive about the future there.

Tampa Bay (5-7)- Gruden took the Bucs to a Super Bowl title last year, so he's safe, but this has got to be a dissapointment.

Atlanta (2-10)- Dan Reeves was hurt a bit by Vick going down, but this was an awful season, and he's probably out come the end of the year.

San Fransisco (5-7)- Well, can anyone really say that the Niners are better off with Dennis Erickson as head coach? He'll be around next year, if only to avoid admitting they shouldn't have gotten rid of Marriucci to begin with.

Arizona (3-9)- The "black hole" of the NFL claims another coach. So long, Dave McGinnis.

So, by my count, here's what should be open come the end of the season:
Buffalo
Oakland
San Diego
NY Giants
Washington
Atlanta
Arizona

They weren't on this list, but Jim Haslett may be out in New Orleans too, especially if the Saints fold near the end again.

So, what do you all think about this?

Marriucci will at least have 2 more years with the Lions to get this mediocrity turned around, and even then, if the team is still bad, it will more than likely be Matt Millen that sees the door than Steve.

Most Lions fans like Steve, but patience is very, very thin with Matt Millen.

The way he treated some of the Lions greats like Herman Moore and Johnny Morton, cutting players as they were boarding a bus, and just the way he seemed to have no qualms about completely tearing apart a 9-7 team that missed the playoffs by one game the year before, and making them a 2-14 team, then 3-13 team, and now 4-8. And if nothing else convinces you that Millen is the root of the current problem in Detroit (well other than the Ford family) THE LIONS HAVENT WON AN AWAY GAME SINCE THE 2000 SEASON.

Matt Millen sucks.

Thank you, that is all.

Butch Davis will probably get one more season to get this team turned around. Hopefully they finish strong, I don't give a *#*#*#*# about draft picks...they just gotta beat the Bengals the last game!

I wonder if Dennis Green is gonna be in the running for any of these.

Watching Mike and the Mad Dog on YES today (which is what got me thinking about this), they are saying that Green could be going to Oakland.

Another thing to consider...All these jobs are open, and the NFL's minority hiring drive will kick in again, so who are the "mandated interview" candidates? Ted Cottrell is the name that springs to mind first, but I'm not sure who else would be out there, as far as minority candidates go.

What about Art Shell?

EDIT

What about that one assistant for the Packers....SOB I can't remember his name but he recently lost a son in an accidental shooting.

EDIT AGAIN

I think his name is Sherm Lewis????

I'd add Dave Wannstedt in Miami.

And unlike past years, these Dolphins are strong on the road and they are now starting to get it together, especially their Big 3 of Fiedler, Williams and Chambers.

They have a tough couple of weeks coming up with New England and Philly, but if they can avoid their customary December collapse, Wannstedt should be in good shape.

We would love to have Dennis Green coaching the Raiders. He still has some Bay Area ties, I believe, from his days coaching at Stanford, so that part of the rumour mill wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Also, Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury-News writes a confirmation in his Monday column that patience with Callahan is indeed wearing thin and that he's lost the confidence of his players. (http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/football/nfl/oakland_raiders/7386133.htm)

Considering the NFL's stupid "must interview a minority" rule Green, Lewis and a few others will definitely be used as tokens if nothing else.

As for coaches on the way out...

In my mind the definites are Reeves, Fassel, Callahan and Schotenhiemer. The rest listed are possibilities, but most will stick around. Jaron saved his ass over the last couple weeks, as has Wanstadt. Davis took his team to the playoffs last season, he's good for another year. Spurrier might be out, but only because Snyder is an impatient idiot.

I'd love to see Jimmy Johnson and Denny Green back in the league. Art Shell is another good football coach.

You could raise Vince Lombardi back from the dead and it won't cure what ails the 'Skins. Until The Danny goes back to doing what he does best( and that's making money by squeezing every last nickel out of the fans) and he gets a GM to run the team, it's going to be the same old song and dance. He needs football people making football decisions. Kinda like when Jack Kent Cooke ran the show.....

I'd like to think Schottenhymen is gone, but he and Spanos are in bed together, so I don't think it will happen.

I think I just heard correctly on the radio that Dick Jaron (sp?) of the Bears got the ax and it looks like Bill Callahan is done with the Raiders and Dave McGinnis is gonna be dealt his walking papers.

Looks like Jim Fassell picked a good time to get fired. Some promising (Atlanta) and semi-promising (Oakland, Arizona) vacancies around.

Gregg Williams has been fired in Buffalo after opening the season with such high expectations.

I think Spurrier really is out of DC. I can't stand the guy, but I hate Danny Snyder even more.

And hell, I'm not even a true 'Skins fan. I only pay attention to them because my wife's brother is such a huge fan
