Damn, as a Brotha, I love the fact they were the first to have Blacks and proved to Brasil that they will always have brothas and win with brothas, they just sound like the Dallas Cowboys, good lookin out homies!
If you're really interested in supporting the team that progressively includes blacks as supporters and players, Flamengo is your team. I've actually had Vasco supporters in Brasil ask me why I am a Flamengo supporter, since I am not black.
I would NEVER go so far as to say I've seen true racist behavior from the Vasco fans, but I've certainly seen a little arrogance and superiority from a few of their fans.
As far as history, do you really think the Vasco administrators and supoprters viewed those first blacks as equals back in the day? I'm not out to condemn anyone, just to focus on today, not a difference of a few months when it comes to racial relationships.
Flamengo is the people's team. Without getting into Brasil's history of class and race, let's just leave it at that. It's the people's team. From the lay of the land. The interior, the slums, the cities, the higher classes. The Cowboys are America's team, and Flamengo is the team of the people. There really shouldn't be another option for you....

What have I always told you? In life you get what you deserve, and seems that the Vasco da Gama scum deserve to be ruled by scum, as they give the vile Eurico Miranda another mandate till 2006:

Vasco re-elect Miranda amid chaotic scenes
RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Eurico Miranda, one of Brazilian football's most controversial figures, has been re-elected president of first division Vasco da Gama.
Opposition candidate Roberto, a former Vasco striker who played for Brazil in the 1978 World Cup, left before counting had finished in the early hours of Wednesday, saying he feared for his safety as the voting hall filled with Miranda supporters.
"My life is more important than anything else," he told Brazilian television. Shortly afterwards, officials announced that Miranda had won the election -- in which club members are entitled to vote -- by 1,474 votes to 1,363.
Roberto had obtained an injuction in the run-up revising the voting list after complaining the original contained irregularities -- among them the inclusion of members who were deceased.
The cigar-smoking Miranda blamed the problem on administration. "It takes time to remove them from the list," he said.
During Tuesday evening's voting, television pictures showed former volleyball player Fernandao with a bleeding nose after he said he was attacked by a group of supporters.
Pictures also showed Vasco security officials threatening and pushing opposition supporters before the camermen were themselves expelled.

People talk about hating Vasco...hmmm...I remember reading a story about when Vasco won the Libertadores, that the club had a victory parade with a route that passed by the administration building of Flamengo. I could see why that would piss off some other people, not to mention giving the appearance of pettiness.
Getting away from that, though, I imagine that the name has roots in Portugal. What I want to know is how in a country whose official language is Portuguese that a Portuguese immigrant is identified as a Portuguese immigrant? I can understand that the two countries are different today but what about back during colonial times...wouldn't they all (with the exception of slaves) have been considered part of the same group? Or maybe it was the Portuguese who immigrated AFTER Brazil became a sovereign nation who then founded Vasco.

The team finally seems to have straightened itself out (well, maybe not defensively  ).
We´ve never lost at home to Ponte in national championship games, so we should get 3 points on thursday - if we could then get 3 more sunday @ Coritiba and then 3 after that against Palmeiras @ home...one can dream!
