Double Eliminator Cup - 2008/09

As a reminder, the Double Eliminator Cup kicks off next weekend (g14), giving everyone another chance. To briefly recap for the newbies, the DE-Cup is the same concept as Blech's Eliminator Cup, except that (a) you only compete against the teams in your own league and (b) you pick up a "strike" the first time you finish at the bottom and are then only eliminated when finish at the bottom a second time. The individual league winners will move on to a champions league round, but that's many weeks down the road. The tie-breakers are the same as the BE-Cup, and I, as commissioner, will resolve any disputes or make up any new rules as needed. Good luck.

Each year I worry about recruiting for the next season, finalizing how many teams will return, and focus on administering the draft in Small Rocks and advising on the draft in other leagues. My work is done pre-season. Then I sit back and admire all the clever managers who create and administer all the cool cup competitions we have. Well done to all those who contribute. It keeps up the interest in these Rocks leagues!

It’s GW15, the second week of the DE-Cup, and we’ve already seen our first elimination as Tally Road continues to scrape the bottom of VSR. It went down to the tie-breaker with Pork Soda as they squared off at 31 points, but Tally Road lost 29-31 when doubled captain points were removed. So much for second chances. GW17 is a week of eliminations, with three teams seeing their exists from the DE-Cup. Deco’s Diving Divas suffer the toughest blow in Dust league, as the Divas were within 2 points of two other teams (both of whom get mentioned in the BE-Cup’s dangerzone – Slippers and Rovers). None of the other contests were close. Meanwhile, VSR is the first league to see a second team eliminated, with the remaining 6 teams squaring off with no strikes.

GW18 sees only one elimination, Windsor Wanderers from Small Rocks, as Small Rocks joins Very Small Rocks with two teams eliminated.

And speaking of Very Small Rocks, the two eliminated teams continued their unproductive ways as Class Acts and Tally Road posted low scores of 25 and 28, but since they were already eliminated this opened the door for a strike against Kopite Juniors, who had posted the respectable score of 32 points in what was a fairly low scoring week. (Just curious, but did 32 points make the cut for the fantasy cup on the site?) Thus far in Very Small, elimination has immediately followed the first strike, so Kopite will its work cut out as it looks to break that pattern without the benefit of extra training during this short week.

Crazies picks up the Sand strike with the league low score of 19 for the week and Southside Saturns picks of the Dust strike with the group’s low score of 22.

And, in other notes on the closest calls, this week’s BE-Cup eliminee “ThisisAnfield” was able to keep a clean sheet in DE-Cup competition as a result of Crazies’ strike as they squared off 19-22 at the bottom of Sand, while Windsor’s elimination spared FC Springfield in what was a close 24-26 matchup at the bottom of Small Rocks.

Answering my own question, I'm told 32 does make the cut, and I have a message that my stellar 36 points this week ranked 656,917 out of 1,800,230.

As it turned out, this was a very low scoring week (due in part to ManU not having a game, no doubt). In my head-to-head league, only 7 of the 20 teams scored above 30. And, our league average was 37.81 for the 32 teams, smashing our season record -- for those keeping score or interested in such things, the previous low average for our league had been 41.13 in gw15 with the high of 49.56 in gw10.
