Once a strong west coast team, Cal State-Fullerton is 0-5-2 and heading to its fourth straight losing season.

Ray Reid arrived in 1997 and won a national title by 2000 with a team that highlighted foreign-born talent. Last year and so far this year, that strategy has achieved mediocre results ... tough to say whether they'll consistently produce MLSers.

numerista, what are you using to compile these charts?

Many schools post their all-time lettermen, so I use that, along with an archived MLS player register, which already includes colleges for most players. It's a little time-consuming, but I really enjoy seeing the results. It seems appropriate to wrap up this project with the nation's current #1 team in both polls:

Not too long ago, people would've said this team was completely irrelevant to soccer in California, let alone the US. In 1998, the year before their current coach took over, they were 2-17-1. More recently, however, they've been putting up excellent records, so it'll be interesting to see what happens next year to current standouts like Drew McAthy and New Zealand national teamer Tony Lochhead.

I ask because I've been working (not recently) on putting together a chart with all current and former MLSers' other playing experience - I hadn't bothered going past 1996, though.

Thought you might be interested, although it's not tremendously useful or complete right now.

Definitely interested ... unfortunately, my soccer stuff was mostly blown away when a back-up didn't work as it should have. So if I'm going to play around with data, I'll need to do some piggy-backing.

Adding Curt Onalfo, who was omitted from the MLS register.

Every year from 1985-89, UVa was the #1 source of future MLS players. In 1990 and '91, they were tied with UCLA. Every year from 1992-95, UVa was the #2 source. In 1996 (Gelnovatch's first year), they fell behind Maryland and into a tie with Indiana. They returned to the #2 slot in 1997 and '98 but haven't been that high since.

Yeah, but those guys were only future MLS players because of Arena's Virginia bias. :D

Others?3 members of St. John's 2001 Final Four team are currently playing professionally:

Peter Philipakos (Olympiakos (Greece)), Shalrie Joseph (New England), and Chris Wingert (Columbus)

The only other former St. John's players I know of who are doing the same are Stefani Miglioranzi (Swindon Town (English League One)) and Dan Popik (Los Angeles).

I think there are very, very few if any significant others.

Thx for the rundown.

You wouldn't expect the Big East to be under-rated, but for the past few years, a lot of the steals of the MLS draft have come from its schools ... Joseph, Wingert, and Ralph were all second-rounders, Gros was a fourth-rounder, Casey Schmidt and Justin Detter fifth-rounders and Chris Aloisi a sixth-rounder. With the records St. John's has put up, maybe a few more of their players deserved a shot?

Duke? Do they have sports teams? ;)

perhaps, but i would attribute st. john's consistent success in recent history to the system in place more so than the individuals players.

Not sure if they're still 5th but interesting quote from a while back: "Among the crop of exciting young Americans developing in MLS who have recently played with the men's national team are Jason Kreis '95 and Jay Heaps '98. Evan Whitfield '98, Garth Lagerwey '95, Mark Dodd '88, and Brian Kelly '97 are also with MLS teams, which gives Duke the fifth-highest total of graduates in the league. "

Not sure if Dodd was on the squad 84 & 85

YST:What took your college career to Duke?
"Besides the fact that it is a great school and it has a great soccer program, my high school girlfriend went to Duke. I thought: my girlfriend was there, good soccer program, strong school... why not? There were also a couple of friends of mine from the Dallas area that went and played at Duke. I went to TCU my first year and was able to get a lot of experience and action in the goal there. Then I transferred and spent the last three years at Duke. "
but it doesn't quite make sense (unless he meant "former" girlfriend)
YST: Where did you and your wife, Stacie, meet?
"During my freshman year at TCU, some friends introduced us. I then transferred to Duke and she went to North Carolina State. We've been together ever since. "
So went to Duke to be with high school girlfriend but girlfriend (and future wife) from TCU followed to NC St. Interesting. Why isn't numerista doing all this work, slacker.

Another ex-Bruin debuted in MLS this weekend, with Gregorio coming on at halftime ... I've updated the list to add him, as well as Barrett, Enfield, Lopez, and Maurin ... all have appeared, though without much impact. Yi (00-01) has been stuck on the bench in Dallas, and Feilhaber (03-04) has started on the European route..

By year, UCLA letter-winners who have appeared in MLS:
82 (1) - Caligiuri
83 (1) - Caligiuri
84 (0) -
85 (1) - Caligiuri
86 (2) - Caligiuri, B.Thompson
87 (1) - B. Thompson
88 (4) - Sa.George, C.Jones, Lapper, B.Thompson
89 (4) - Sa. George, C.Henderson, C.Jones, Lapper
90 (11) - Friedel, Sa.George, C. Henderson, S. Henderson, T.Ianni, Ibsen, C.Jones, Lapper, JM Moore, Salcedo, B.Thompson
91 (9) - Friedel, Sa. George, S.Henderson, T.Ianni, Ibsen, C.Jones, Lapper, JM Moore, Salcedo
92 (11) - Friedel, Frye, Hejduk, S.Henderson, T.Ianni, Ibsen, Lewis, JM Moore, Razov, Salcedo, Snitko
93 (10) - Frye, Hejduk, S.Henderson, T.Ianni, Jakins, Lewis, Razov, Salcedo, Snitko, Vanney
94 (9) - Frye, Hejduk, Jakins, J.Keller, Lewis, Razov, Reis, Snitko, Vanney
95 (10) - Frye, Se.George, Hartman, Jakins, J.Keller, Lewis, Razov, Reis, Snitko, Vanney
96 (9) - Conrad, Se.George, Hartman, Jakins, J.Keller, Reis, Shak, Vagenas, Victorine
97 (10) - Bocanegra, Conrad, Se.George, J.Keller, Reis, Rimando, Shak, Tennyson, Vagenas, Victorine
98 (8) - Boca, Futagaki, Se.George, Rimando, Shak, Tennyson, Vagenas, Victorine
99 (8) - Boca, Futagaki, Rimando, Shak, Tennyson, S.Thompson, Vagenas, Victorine
00 (9) - Akwari, Countess, Gregorio, Griffin, Maurin, Taylor, Tennyson, S.Thompson, Wells
01 (10) - Akwari, Futagaki, Enfield, Gregorio, Griffin, A.Lopez, Maurin, Taylor, S.Thompson, Wells
02 (9*) - Enfield, Futagaki, Gregorio, Griffin, A.Lopez, Maurin, Taylor, S.Thompson, Wells
03 (8*) - C.Barrett, Enfield, Gregorio, Griffin, A.Lopez, Maurin, Taylor, Wells
04 (3*) - C.Barrett, Enfield, A.Lopez
*Some players still at UCLA

Even though UCLA players continue to advance into MLS, there haven't been any noteworthy successes. Each year from 1990-99, at least four letterwinners earned a US cap. From 2000 on, however, not a single player has gotten close to that level yet.

We can add Bill Gaudette, Ryan Kelly, and Chris Corcoran to the St. John's list this year.

Along those lines, I don't believe Wake had a single MLSer prior to Brian Carroll in 2003. This year, they have two rookie-of-the-year candidates (Parkhurst, Sealy), a third rookie who plays regularly (Riley), and a fourth who has appeared (Lowery).

But as for UCSB, last year's national runners-up, their drought continues.
