View Full Version : 4-5-1 or 4-4-2...?

It looks like today (vs Liverpool in CC) the 4-4-2 worked pretty good.
Which one you think is better?

The problem I see is that with 4-4-2 it would still be very hard to have Bent and Pauly together...

(Also, one on-the-side question: Campbell is on a one-year loan... it means he goes back to Man Utd at the end of this season?? -- I hope not!!)

Why not use both of them? I think both would be an excellent choice and its good to have the team understand how to run both.

It can actually mess up the rivals too.
Today's Liverpool's defenders looked clearly lost, more than once.

I like the idea of using both formations, depending on the situation. But Modric playing behind the lone striker is becoming more and more appealing. He is really starting to pick up his game and he's growing into a bigger threat. I really like his place in the squad.

I am also in that lot that is for using both formations. They each have there advantages and we are starting to look dangerous with the 4-5-1 finally and we should keep it around a little longer.

The 4-5-1 is working well in the league against strong sides. Away from home especially, I think we will mostly use it. But it's good to not be too predictable.

It's a squad game these days, we have to be flexible and play in the best formation for whoever's playing.

if we can score goals in the 5 - 4 - 1 then i am in. We looked like a draw with these formation. Since I am talking to myself

Thinking back, I believe that both mid and top 5-1 and 4-2 are ok.
The problem is our defense. No offense to Gomes and those hard-working guys we have in the back, the quality is still inferior to most EPL teams. That's where we need to get better.
Today too, we gave up two really dumb goals.

Like I said in the match day post, and in a morbid way. well, this be a way to get Cesar a way to play to see if he is any better than Gomes has been.

I am starting to like the 4-5-1 best myself (at least for the all important league games) because of this Hudd-Modric-Bent link that has been superb for a little while now. In a 4-4-2, I dont think we can play Modders AND Hudd effectively, and right now, those are our 2 best passers of the ball I feel. I would like to maybe see 4-4-2 in the Cup competitions though as we saw with Pavvy & Campbell in the Carling Cup. It worked out quite well for us tonight.

all valid points, I think it is good to have the flexibility to be able to do both.

As mentioned above I believe using and understanding both would work well. I think the spurs have the personel to do it. Modric is definitly starting to adjust and settle in to the premier style of play.
