View Full Version : Monday delay

I noticed a quirk today. I'm listening to Fulham-Portsmouth on BBC Five Live while I do some work. When I hear something interesting, I dash into the other room and flip to FSW. To my surprise, I don't just catch a replay -- I wait 30 seconds or so and see it happen ... "live"!

Perhaps I should complain that the "live" broadcast is actually a minute or two behind, but I have to admit the delay has its advantages!

The delay is implemented in the control room in order for the producer to alert the FOX Sports en Espanol/FOX Sports Latin America announcers at least 7 seconds before a goal is scored.

That way, the pxp announcer can come up with a rehearsed goal call from his repertoire.

FOX copied that trick from ESPN International, which has used the trick for several years.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the Spanish-language US networks use the same trick.

If you were listening to BBC Five Live, I'm going to assume it was via the internet. The net itself has a delay as your audio stream passes from server to server. So the radio broadcast was already delayed before you even noticed the TV delay. ;)

Oliver has pointed out another reason for the delay, but I'm wondering how much just the distance the signal needs to travel (from UK, to satallite to FSW studios to satallite to my house...probably a few more bounces somewhere) I'm sure has something to do with that. Even at the speed of light, it's still can't be live (or is it memorex?) :p

My guess is that they want to do 1-2 minutes of Bretos introduction before turning the match over "live" to the Sky crew.

Speaking of which, but still keeping with the "delay" theme of the thread title... do they no longer run those Ener-X adds (as in "Yes. Stamina. That's a good word for it")? Or did the enhancement ads and infomercials replace those?

So when SHearer scores in England, how long is it before Shearer scores in America?

Were you watching on a DBS system? I've noticed with live sports that there is a significant (@10 sec) delay from broadcast/cable to DISH. I'll be on the phone with my dad and we are both watching the same pointy ball game, he'll be in mid-sentence and yell out "interception" while I watch as the QB drops back, scans the field, and throws the pick a few seconds later. This might have something to do with it......just a guess.

I've noticed a slight delay when I turn on the TV. The TV picks up the cable TV signal for channel 3, the local, cbs affiliate. If I then turn on the DTV box and it is also on channel 3 I notice two things. First, the DTV picture is much much better and second, the last line I heard when I turned on the TV is repeated when I tune in the dish. I guess the extra 27,000 miles the signal travels to the DirecTV satellite and then the 27,000 miles it travels to get to my dish causes the slight delay. On the other hand, 54,000 extra miles in a second or two isn't bad.

"Alzare" works much better.......so I'm told!
But getting back to the delay thing - the ManU/Rovers match on Saturday was also about a minute behind the internet feed, but oddly enough
seemed to get more in sync after halftime. So I guess if the game kicks off promtly at the scheduled time, FSW would delay it for the intro stuff.

During WC 02, didn't we also notice a significant delay between the telecasts from Univision and ABC/ESPN? IIRC, it was the ESPN telecasts that were delayed in those instances.

Not that it has anything to do with FSW, but it is along the lines of the thread. I have noticed that when I listen to Woody Durham on the radio and watch the Carolina game on tv, that Woody calls the action about 3 seconds before the tv shows it, why is that?

Yeah, it surprised me, too. I wonder if it's just a Monday thing.

It may depend on the teams involved. Five Live may be allowed to stream a game involving teams who don't charge for audio broadcasts.

-howie Weekend matches. The rights for midweek league matches aren't subject to the same regulations.

Must the same as Sky Sports News not showing EPL highlights on Saturday, but they can for matches the rest of the week.

It's all about whom they sold the rights to.
