1. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with the battery after 18 months -- not that it doesn't happen, but it likely happens more to people who use it constantly than to people who use it primarily for music / commuting.
2. Apple has a battery replacement program (http://www.info.apple.com/support/applecare_products/service/ipod_service.html). It ain't cheap but it's better than a whole new iPod.

Neither have I, perhaps these brothers got it a bit too close to their bongwater.

Nice try, but I've had my iPod since November 2001 - (one of the original iPods) - and I've neither experienced nor even heard of this problem.
Somebody did tell those fellas that once the battery runs out, they HAVE GOT TO CHARGE IT, right?

This is disappointing. For a company with Apple's reputation and track record of being a "customer first" company, this is surprising. That Apple even has a battery repair program is evidence that they need one -- it's evidence that people arehaving battery problems. Even if people are having to pay 100 bucks every three years for a new battery, that's unacceptable. You don't have to pay 100 bucks every three years to keep your CD player working, or to keep you stereo working. This is the sort of thing you'd expect from Microsoft, not Apple.

You can get replacement batteries for the iPod for $50 now, it's not through Apple but it is half the price.

I work at CompUSA and the iPod is one of our most returned items. Everyone seems to have a problem with them. Personally, I think they're awesome, but for some reason, a lot people seem to have problems with them out here.

as a windows ipod owner, music match sucks. and itunes, i'm not a big fan of either. ephpod tho, is freeware, and very nice. i just wish i could find a program that could do mass id3 tags better. dr.tag is nice, but i don't have a crack for it

There's a reason it's $100 cheaper. It's no where near the quality of an iPod.

could you be a little a bit more specific... i only want an mp3 player that won't break on me and that price is very reasonable as opposed to the overpriced ipod. little frills don't matter to me. i only care whether or not it sounds good and is reliable.

I'm not a iPod owner, though I've been thinking about it, and Quite frankly Apple should have their asses handed to them on this one:
As it turns out, it's possible to replace the battery for as little as $49 using third-party kits. Apple itself offers a battery-replacement service for about $106 including mailing, with a 90-day guarantee on materials and workmanship. Apple's program was introduced only in the past two weeks.
1/5 (or more depending on model) of the the cost of the device for an replacement battery. That is a load of horse *#*#*#*#.
Apple better get the engineers hop scotching a long to figure out a better way to do this biz.
