Great table. But which Malta is which? ;)Malta's seems to have joined UEFA (http://www.uefa.com/uefa/aboutuefa/matchassociations/association=88.html) in 1960.

Turkey seems to be missing from the original list. Joined UEFA (http://www.uefa.com/uefa/aboutuefa/matchassociations/association=135.html) in 1962 (they were a FIFA member since 1923)

Wow the table shows how UEFA expanded to include more and more minnows. Only about 3 of the newer national teams save themselves from that title.

when previously joined nations split into smaller parts, that's kind of an inevitable result. The only opposite was East & West Germany becoming one, removing the invariably poor East Germany from the qualifying groups.

there are also a few nations such as San Marino and Liechtenstein that have only bothered putting a team out relatively recently, even though there wasn't really anything stopping them in the past.

East Germany wasn't on my mind since they no longer exist as a national team. I also regard them as being a successful in Olympic football which counts for something.

Can't say the same for Malta, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Andorra, Liechenstein, and San Marino that you mentioned.

Things won't get any better once Monaco comes into the fold.

East Germany was always relative sucessfull at the Olympics.
That had to do with the fact, that they had like most communistic states good scientifics and no doping tests.

Interesting statistics btw.

East Germany were quite a decent team which were certainly not "invariably poor". Their Western cousins have had a couple reasons to be pissed at them, that's for sure.

Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia, and Latvia are 4 of the newer teams that have made it to the final competitions. Slovakia and Israel have had narrow misses.

Can any country that just barely has a tiny bit of land in Europe join UEFA?
