This is a decidedly non-musical comment, but the best album covers thread was reminding me of something I kind of really like: bands who aggressively package themselves.

There are bands like Radiohead and Super Furry Animals, who obviously think a lot about the graphics that accompany their music. And there are bands like the Rolling Stones and 98% of the Hip Hop Nation whose style and lifestyle are deeply reflected in their music.

But I’m talking about bands who not only place high priority on their style — like say Madonna or Kid Rock or P(lease Lord, give me some real talent) Diddy — but bands who truly go the extra-mile to literally package themselves — and that’s not always a bad thing. So....

Here's my Hyper Style Top Ten:

Pizzicato 5 — The true inspiration for this post. Their collateral images and fashion are incredible. From schoolgirl uniforms to secret agent suits to diva gowns. And their album and single covers are a virtual encyclopedia of co-opted and reconstructed cool images from the 50s to the 00s. The center of the fabulous universe.

The Ramones — From the Chuck Connors to the jackets to the names — brilliant artifice that rings strangely true. The full package.

The Small Faces — Not just damn smart dressers who could rock like hell, but truly mod pioneers and devotees to fashion.

DEVO — Performance art you can wear and dance to.

The Hives — Making suits and hyperbole cool again.

Public Enemy — Everyman Front Man + Meds-deprived Court Jester + Separatist Militia = Marketing genius.

The Beatles (’63-65) — By Revolver, they were each letting their hair go their own which way. But up until Rubber Soul, the lads were in lock step. And who else could make collarless suits look cool?

The Specials / Twin-Tone — Inspiring more cool buttons than the entire previous history of mankind.

Dolly Parton — Even though she’s a great musician, her glitterized self-packaging could be seen as the death-knell of “good” country. But she’s kept it up.

The Darkness — Hilarious.

I have all my P5 discs lined up, covers facing out, over one of my cd racks in my living room. They are so cool.

I'd love to have a set of all their Japanese vinyl albums & 12" singles framed on the wall--that would be hot.

Speaking of DEVO...they've finally put out all "Now The Story Can Be Told..." on DVD, complete with audio commentary track. That's gonna be on my Christmas list for sure. The cover's got that weird Monkey/Turkey on the cover that scares me every time.

Add Deee-lite to the style list. Those guys were always cool looking, and their album art matched. Towa Tei is still extra-fly.

I just got a bunch of their stuff that a friend made for me. Very, very odd and great music. I'll have to start looking for their discs, now.

Two random things on DEVO. There was some show on Sundance hosted by Thurston Moore that showed a Bruce Connor film set to "Mongoloid," only it was a rougher, under-produced cut compared to the one that made... what was that album, Jocko *#*#*#*#?

And when they called that one album, not up to standards with their other work IMO, Oh, No! It's DEVO, I give them credit. Perhaps the most appropriate album title of all time, with the possible exceptions of King Crimson's Three of a Perfect Pair and the Rolling Stones' Sucking in the Seventies

Wow..."homo" is censored here? How stupid.

"Mongoloid" is from "Q:Are We Not Men, A:We Are Devo", the album that contains "Jocko *#*#*#*#".

thank you. I was spacing on the title. I could see the cover, and could probably draw it from memory... except for the title. And except for the fact that I can't draw.

I had this on 8-track, by the way. Might still be in my mother's house, but I'm not going to look too closely out of fear of what else I might have on 8-track.

I was two-seconds away from renting that disc yesterday. I rented the Robert Evans documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture" instead. Shoulda went with the spuds -- the Evans thing was underwhelming.

I had no idea what that thing was but it totally creeped me out.
