I'm not going to say Clueless is underrated. I think it's widely recognized as a piece of mid-90s zeitgeist, and the Jane Austen influence is probably overstated - I mean, it's not like She's the Man is somehow worth watching because it's a Shakespeare adaptation.

It did a pitch perfect job of capturing the California youth lingo - going over the top without sounding like dad trying to act hip. The Cher character, someone who would be so easy to hate, is likable without being made into a saint either. Just a well crafted film all around. No teen film has come close to being this good, except maybe Mean Girls.

And the supporting cast is some serious stuff:
Paul Rudd
Donald Faison
Breckin Meyer
Jeremy Sisto
Brittany Murphy

But really, almost 15 years after its release, Clueless holds up really, really well. You can't say that about Reality Bites

Don't forget Dan Hedaya. The guy makes that movie.

On that note, whatever happened to Alicia Silverstone's career?

Was it as good as St Elmo's Fire, that is the question.

Hehehe. I quite fancied whatshisname, the nerdy one in it, at the time.

Having step-siblings myself, Alicia Silverstone hooking up with her step brother really creeped me out.

Don't forget Dan Hedaya. The guy makes that movie.I was going to mention him, but I brought up the other players, since they were all 20-something unknowns who all now have careers of varying viability.

Oh, should mention the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Julie (not Downtown) Brown, for all you 90s fetishists.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

The movie is pointless. What's the plot? Some dumb popular broad realizes how ridiculous she is in 'crafting' a new kid to be popular. So then she stops...and...that's it. It didn't capture anything real about California youth culture. And it's boring.

I'm not a movie snob or anything. No really, I can enjoy dumb movies. I just watched and had a chuckle over Deuce Bigalow European Jigolo the other day. but a thread praising Clueless? Really?

Really?I would never argue that Clueless is for everyone. Great works of art rarely are. I don't think too many people got it when it came out, either. Just as people thought a Rothko was merely paint thrown onto a canvass, they just saw Clueless as a silly Jane Austen retread with "As if!" and "Whatever" thrown in. And one can appreciate a Rothko, but reasonably choose not to hang it in an ante-bellum plantation home, say.

Considering Van Gough wasn't appreciated by his contemporaries and Mozart died penniless, Amy Heckerling is lucky to have her genius recognized in her time.

you offer proof in that you like funny movies by using Deuce Bigalo? And not only that, the sequel?
honestly, that might be the most credibility-sapping post i've ever read.

If I had actually said that, then yes. Re-read my post. I called it a dumb movie. I used it to establish my credibility of not being a movie snob, while still attacking the notion that Clueless is some "work of art".

Seriously, work of art and Clueless should not be in the same paragraph.

Sorry, but no credibility can ever be established under any circumstances when you flash your 'I enjoy bad Rob Schneider sequels' card at the door. Them's the facts.

Seriously, work of art and Clueless should not be in the same paragraph. You know, I totally understand your frustration. I watched Sodebergh's remake of Solaris and I thought this was the most tedious overwrought crap ever, and didn't understand why it was such a big deal, and it kinda pissed me off.

But you know, it wasn't that I was too stupid to get it. It just wasn't my cup of tea. Like I said, Clueless isn't for everyone, and truly great works often aren't.
