Date: Wednesday, 5 November 2008
Time: 7:45 pm (UK), 2:45 pm (US Eastern), 11:45 (US Pacific)
Venue: Celtic Park, Glasgow
Television: Sky Sports 2 (UK), ESPN2 (US)

Humbled at Old Trafford on Matchday 3, Celtic FC must seek to produce another night of heroics on home soil when Manchester United FC come to town for the second instalment of the teams' back-to-back meetings.

• Gordon Strachan's Scottish champions claimed a memorable 1-0 victory when United made their maiden visit to Celtic Park two years ago – a result that helped the Glasgow side reach the UEFA Champions League first knockout round for the first time.

• Then, however, they went into the match with the confidence gained from having pushed United all the way in an earlier 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford. This time, by contrast, Celtic returned north from Manchester a well-beaten side after going down 3-0 to goals from Dimitar Berbatov (30, 51) and Wayne Rooney (76) on Matchday 3.

• Rather than contemplating qualification, therefore, they will enter the contest with the more modest ambition of just keeping their hopes alive having taken only one point from three matches so far. Level with Aalborg BK at the foot of Group E, Celtic will be eliminated if they lose and Villarreal CF take a point or more at AaB.

• There are no such worries for reigning European and English champions United, who can secure a last-16 berth if they win in Sir Alex Ferguson's home city and AaB fail to defeat Villarreal in Denmark. They could also qualify with a draw should AaB lose.

• United will travel full of confidence given their unbeaten away record in the competition now stretches back seven matches. So far in Group E, they have drawn 0-0 with Villarreal then defeated AaB 3-0 in Denmark prior to beating Celtic.

• As if to underline the sides' contrasting fortunes, Celtic are the only team in the group stage still to score a goal while United, together with Chelsea FC, are one of only two outfits yet to concede.

• Celtic can at least draw encouragement from their formidable home record in the competition. They have lost just one of their last eleven UEFA Champions League games in Glasgow's east end – a 3-2 defeat by FC Barcelona in last season's first knockout round. Indeed Barcelona, who also won 3-1 at Celtic Park in 2004/05, are the only visiting team to have beaten the Bhoys on their own turf, where 18 previous matches have yielded 12 wins and four draws.

Big game. I think Celtic will be a much different proposition than the side that allowed us to cakewalk a few weeks ago. They are stronger at Parkhead, and they will give us a good match. I don't know about the status of their injuries - Samaras, VoH, etc. If those guys aren't back yet, then the same dangermen as last time - Nakamura, and to some extent McGeady and MacDonald - are the ones to worry about.

I'm thinking a 2-1 victory to us, clinching the group. I do wonder who Fergie plans on using at RB - if Wes still has that ankle knock, does Gaz go in or do we expose Rafael to his first "tough" fixture? Also think Fletch will get the start back in his native country.

Paddy Crerand thinks we're going to rest some big names ahead of Arsenal, as it's a lunchtime clash only 3 days after Celtic.

Do you like playing with one midfielder?

I'd replace Nani in my lineup with Parky now that I think about it.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Giggs start this one. Gut feeling says he could at any rate in something like:

------------VDS-----------
Neville-Ferdinand-Vidic-Evra
------Fletcher-Carrick-------
---Rooney-Giggs-Ronaldo---
----------Berbatov

Not necessarily with those players around him, but that formation.

Should know better than to predict what Fergie's going to do but think there's a good chance he goes with that setup.

We need to win this to ensure qualification and most likely top spot; meaning that we can rest players in the next 2 games.

Where do you guys get those pics for that [img] vs. [img] part? They looks cool.

I know Giggs is going to start. Would not be surprised to see Evans start.

Wes is injured wont play , Neville in for him def.
Wes misses training

Aside from long term injury victims Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, Wes Brown is the Reds' only doubt ahead of the Champions League trip to Celtic.

An ankle knock has kept the defender out of United's last two games and he also missed training on Tuesday morning.

Young defender James Chester has been drafted in as cover and was part of the 23-man squad who trained at Carrington in preparation for the European clash with Gordan Strachan's side.

The Reds will fly out to Scotland on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Wednesday night's game at Celtic Park.

The training squad: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Foster, Neville, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Chester, O'Shea, Rafael, Evans, Possebon, Anderson, Fletcher, Nani, Ronaldo, Gibson, Giggs, Carrick, Park, Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney.

Hopefully we will see Possebon.

Good for Chester to get to travel with the big boys.

Too optimistic to see Possebon IMO. Fletcher is rested from Hull, and Carrick needs to gain fitness. Fergie hasn't used a lone forward since we got Berbs, so that leaves only 4 in the midfield. Think it'll be Fletch and Carrick together.

Fergie said Foster would play last week, just after the West Ham game.

Sky apparently say that Rafael will be playing. I would have thought Jonny Evans would get a game. But that seems less likely if Rafael plays.

If we're going to rest anyone in defence it should be Rio and Evra. We really need their pace against Arsenal.

VDS, Neville, and Brown out.

Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville and Wes Brown will sit out Manchester United's UEFA Champions League tie at Celtic.

The United trio have not travelled with their team-mates to Glasgow ahead of Wednesday's Group E encounter at Parkhead.

The holders have confirmed that Dutch goalkeeper Van der Sar has been rested, rather than being left out due to injury.

England cap Ben Foster is expected to be given the nod to make his Champions League debut ahead of Polish shot-stopper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Van der Sar was left out of last week's 2-0 win over West Ham United, with Kuszczak taking the gloves, but Foster is due to make his first appearance of the season on Wednesday.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is also without Brown after the full-back failed to shake off an ankle knock which has kept him out of the last two matches.

Captain Neville has also been left in Manchester, so exciting Brazilian teenager Rafael da Silva looks set to start at right-back.

The only other injury absentees are midfield duo Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes as United look to book a place in the last 16 with victory over the SPL champions.

So Rafael gets his first "tough" fixture, an away at Parkhead where he'll have to deal with Aiden McGeady. Should be be a relatively good test for his defensive prowess.
