Coach Meyer on the Cottbus game:
"I have not seen anything like the first 40 minutes in my whole career. We played at home against a team at eye-level, and we were far from taking the game in our own hands. I thought we were beyond anything like that. But then we go out and walk around as if we had weights on our feet."
The pressure?
"Forget the pressure. Every team has pressure, Cottbus has pressure. Our problems are lying deeper. We have not played a single game on Bundesliga level for 90 minutes under my regime. We have no balance in the squad. The balance between fighters and creative players, old and young, offense and defense - it all doesn't fit."
"We will exchange two or three players in the winter break, to get a better balance in the team. If someone like Marko Marin has an experiened defender or DM around him, if Alex Baumjohann has a guy to look up to next to him, these boys - and others - will be stronger."
"Our optimism to reach our shorttime goal, to stay between the other teams until christmas, was dampened today. We can and will not stop and work hard in the next weeks. But we will also explore who will be in the team for the second half of the season."
Good prospects for 18-year-old DM Tony Jantschke, who gave his debut in the second half.
"I would like to talk more about Tony Jantschke, if there had not been so many negative things on the field. I had the idea to take him into the team before. But if we were defeated, I would have thrown the boy to the wolves."
He had nothing to fear after the disastrous first half, it could not become worse. A good decision:
"Now I know the boy can play against Leverkusen, if he is not injured. It is no risk for me, and no risk for him."

Since he plays for the US, I have seen him a bit. He is quite tall/large and a very hard-nosed defender. I think he can stiffen the Borussia defense. His one weakness is a tendency to get red cards--partly due to his size. If he hits someone, they *stay* hit. Could be a good choice.

I agree with this, but I think he's corrected the fouling issue somewhat. He is a force in the air and if he gets beaten it's usually by smaller/faster forwards. At 26 he's experienced both on the international and club level and would be ready to come right in and help. Some might disagree but I think he's the USA's best defender.

Gooch is definitely weeding out that part of his game. Just this past weekend, in the 15th match of the season, he picked up his first caution. He's learning and will continue to learn where and how to use his size to his advantage. The Bundesliga would test him in that regard but he has all but eased the needless and useless fouling/cards.

Thanx for translating the article. Was that first half really the worst since a very long time? You had been at stadium, so you can surely rate it the best (I haven't seen the game this time)...

A painful defeat
One day after the 3-1 depressing defeat against Energie Cottbus it was time for Borussia to regroup and lick their wounds. Hans Meyer missed the recovery training session, however.

First bit is Genk not high enough. Let us see what the poker will bring.

Yes, it was a virtual disaster. A better team would have destroyed us. No resistance from our players, only shakiness.

C'mon, I don't want to see any rumours from Belgian sites! Let's see a serious Borussia source.

Well, that's simply unbelievable after the good 2nd half against Bayern.
Taking a look at the next 5 games (Leverkusen, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim and Bremen), is very calming...:(
Btw: At least the 18 y old Tony Jantschke was a highlight of this sad Saturday. Was he really that promising (Torfabrik rated him with 2,5)?

I think there is a big baby bonus in it. He was ok, that's it. On the other hand the boy was in his first Bundesliga minutes much better than most of the other players; this deserves respect. Disregarding his special situation, a 3.5 is a fair rating.

I simply don't believe that we're going to pay 3 million for a goalie ... when knowing about the fact that the signing of a CB and especially a RB has top priority!

Well, that's the "Kicker" rating. 'Torfabrik' seems to be a little bit too generous sometimes...;)
But hey, it's good to know we have another promising talent (which can also play RB) up our sleeve! It looks like Dorda & Jantschke will be starters against Leverkusen. Maybe we should even start with Heubach as CB, since he surely can't be worse than Gohouri against Schalke & Cottbus...
Have a nice evening.
