Seems the club is trying to boost membership. If you join between now and Feb 8th (cost of 77E/yr) you get one free VIP seat (normally 99E). Shit, Keith, if you have extra trink Geld laying around that would be worth it.:D

I happened VERY quietly, but somehow 1860 extended him until 2011 without much fanfare. Hell, transfermarkt.de did not even pick it up. The 1860 website made no mention of it. He was out of contract in June but they managed to extend until 2011. Great (non) news!!!!

Ah, Footy is in a snitty mood.:D
I don't hype him up, I just see what he does on the field and give him credit for his off the ball stuff rather than measuring hsi worth solely by how many goals he scores.

And as I've told you before, I've seen it often enough live and I see nothing special in this kid.
He has potential yes, but potential isn't always realized no matter how much you want to see it happen.

Never said there was anything "speical" about him like he is some Messianic striker. What I have said is that he is a total striker who does as much off the ball as on the ball. For 1860 THAT is unusual. We have had few players over the years who have shown as much off the ball as on it. Most of the time they have no clue where to be. Sure they net a few but it never lasts.

My point with Schaeffler has been that once he starts netting balls (IF he starts netting balls) the rest will fall into place. I am sure it is a matter of time. Will he be the next Martin Max or the next Benny Lauth? I don't know. What I HAVE said is that he has the potential to be both.

That much is true. I guess I'm used to following a club or clubs where a player like Schaeffler is nothing special.
Trust me, I see his overall game, I do, but just because it is there this early in his career, it doesn't mean it will ever advance. Let's let him do the work and see what happens.

Garry, there have been too many before who seemed to just need "time". Just as many never pan out as those who do. Maybe even more.
Again, how about just letting him develop and see where it goes. I know you want him to be the next one. So do I. However, he's far from it just yet.
Sure he has the potential, but again, how about we not put any more expectations on him and just let him play?

Footy sent me this article via PM. I have translated, but for those working on their German, here's the official link (http://www.bild.de/BILD/sport/fussball/zweite-liga/2009/01/17/1860-muenchen/aufstieg-oder-abschied.html).
Promotion or Farewell?
Defensive boss Gregg Berhalter (35) is pleased with the recent announcement of the Club president [stating that promtion by 2010 is the club's goal]: "I think it is good if he sets a concrete goal. Every player needs that. A club like 1860 should not be left to spoil in the 2nd Liga“, said the American in an interview with BILD and said clearly: "In order to reach this goal, the club must invest money in new players this summer."
But he has not yet given up hope for the spring season (Rückrunde). "We have really strengthened oureslves during the winter with Rösler, Aigner and Pourie. This is the strongest roster that we have had in the last few years“, said Gregg and appeals to the team: "We must not go into any challenges half-heartedly, like in the fall season. Everyone must go into every situation and give their last. It is a question of mental fortitude." Clear words from the old hand.
He has been in 70 2.BL games for the Löwen over the last three years. In the summer it could be over for him. "I not had any new offer up to now", he said. "I understand that the club needs more time to make a decsion. But naturally it would be better if someone said to me what the plan is." Even though a new offer from 1860 is not assured, Gregg remains a
Löwe. Also, he has two active offers from the MLS available.
"I am not certain what I will do in the summer. I would someday like to go back to my homeland. I miss the USA. But my wife would rather stay here. Anything is possible", so says the father of three. "I can well imagine working as a coach. In America that would certainly be eaiser. But in Germany it would also be a possibility."
Good article and it REALLY makes me respect this guy to no end. He is coming to the end of his career and the only thoughs (publically) that he is having is what lies ahead for the next three months for the club. THAT is the type of guy 1860 has a long, proud history of keeping around. Anyone who has been married OR is married knows that if the wife wants to stay you can pretty much BET YOUR ASS that he is sticking around. She has spent the last 15 years following HIS dream. He does not seem like the type to force her to go, yet again, to an other place to pursue the next stage of his dream. Lastly, I cannot imagine he would make more as a coach in the US than he would in Germany.....not unless he picks up a D3 club or higher (Eddie, you agree?).
My guess is he will, if space and $$ exist, be offered another one year extension OR a nice job in the training staff. If he does not already have his license, we will likely we working on it....perhaps as a coach in the youth department at first. I really wish him the best. As much crap as I gave him his first season he has proven over and over again that he is a class act. Hell, I honestly think he has IMPROVED as a player with 1860. I hope we can keep him around.
I wonder which MLS teams are hunting him. Anyone?

I agree. Mostly I agree -wife wants to stay, you stay.
I think he's got potential as a coach, and would be looked at as an assistant in the US straight away. In Germany do you get to bypass the basic courses if you have been a pro for 5 years?
MLS- I would assume Red Bull, from Jersey and would have thought FC Dallas, but maybe not, now that they signed Purdy.
Seattle would also make sense - Sigi knows something, and Keller already there.
Berhalter - have to say I have a much greater respect for that guy, and I was respecting him a lot the past few seasons.

Germany is much like the US. He would get a pass on just about every license level up to what is USSF C equivalent. They may or may not let him go that far. B or A level would definately need to take the class.
That's all going the official route. We all know in the US they give ex pros a "pass" if someone at the USSF likes them. In Germany it is MUCH different: you don't take the class, you don't get the badge. My guess is they would give him a pass up to the Bayern state-level license (allowing him to coach U19s. Anything above that would require a course or two. MUCH more in depth there than in the US. Got my Bavarian and UEFA "C" licsense over there. MUCH more in depth than in the US.

Testspiel (http://www.tsv1860.de/de/saison/profis/testspiele/2008/testspiel_aalen-1860_2009-01-18.php) where Lars Bender picked up a strain of the right cruciate ligament....out for a few weeks. Bierofka somehow got a cut on his left foot and had four stiches....is out for two weeks and is questionable against HSV for the DFB cup tie.
Beda seems to be the wink link (again) in defense. On a positive note Schaeffler scored the second goal, with Sven Bender uping his price tag and scoring the first.
Here comes the injury rain Loewen fans, get your umbrellas. If Beda is in defense I expect a VERY sucky start to the spring leg.

That won't be the only reason. They start with SC Freiburg. That won't be an easy proposition no matter who is in defense.
As far as I can find, 1860 hasn't beaten Freiburg in their last 9 1st or 2nd Bundesliga matches.
From what I can find, the last time 1860 beat Freiburg was in the 2005/2006 DFB Pokal......

As you are so fond of writing, history don't mean squat. What matters is how healthy they are, their form and the form of the team they are playing. Otherwise I could point out that, historically, 1860 is 12-5-8 against SCF. However, the last few games have gone 0-2-4 to SCF over the last few years....so nearly half of the draws and losses have been in the last few years. That might bode "historically" well for SCF, however, when you look at WHEN they have played each other it has usually been during 1860's historic "Crap Spells" over the last three years. So for me the big question is: "Will 1860 be in a 'crap spell' or not?"
Rumor floating around that 1860 might look at MSV reject Fernando Avalos (http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/spieler/14228/fernando-avalos/transferdaten.html). I certainly hope we would not look at ANY player that has been to 10 clubs in 11 years!!!:mad: Doubt the rumor is true....he would break up all that good Karma Kurz has going.;)

Dude, that's the best bit of rationalization I've seen in a long while. Great going! :D
As far as Avalos goes, I think even '60 isn't that desperate..........
