Yeah, Spain is third because they barely made it into Euro 2004. I know the rankings were figured out before they could take that into account, but please. A Wales v. Spain match with Wales at home would be a toss-up IMO.

holland is confusing - are they good or not?

Holy _, I didn't even see that! I always just look for the USA ranking. There has NEVER been a truer opinion expressed on Big Soccer. Mexico 5th!? This is only because they're playing more matches than the other top 20 teams. Can't wait to see them beat Italy at the next World Cup!

Not that the rankings should be based on one game, but Turkey just lost to Latvia and wont be in Portugal next summer, and Holland is putting an American football score on Scotland right now. So IMHO Holland is totally underrated, and Mexico and Turkey dont deserve to be in the top 10.

Someone should probably add an [R] to the subject line now that we've brought today's Euro Q scores into this.

About Holland though... in the last two years, they have had man-for-man one of the best teams in the world. Stam is one of the top handful of defenders in the world, and Kluivert, Makaay, and Van Nistlerooy are in the top five strikers. Every other match, they put on an amazing demolition job against a strong team. However, in the matches that really count, they often underperform, hence their need to get to Euro 2004 via the playoffs. At the last WC, they did not qualify, and then played so many friendlies against teams that did qualify to show that they were capable of winning the whole thing.

I totally agree withyou about Mexico and Turkey, but not with Holland. I'm watching Holland play at this very moment, and they are up 6-0, yes thats right, 6-0 on Scotland, and are on their way to Portugal next summer. Not that the rankings should be based on one game, but if they can play like they are then they deserve their spot.

Someone should definately add an [R] to the title.

Other than Mexico, are there any other teams above the US that should be ranked below the Yanks? Any teams below the Yanks that should be ranked ahead of them?

It seems hard to believe that we're really only 1 notch below Italy, but hey, whatever...

Are you kidding me?! ELO has Australia ranked ahead of the USA!

And the FIFA rankings are rediculous...Mexico is not even close to being in the top 5 in the world. I can't understand how the USA consistantly owns Mexico, yet no rankings of any kind have the US ranked (at the very least) as high as Mexico.

'Cause we don't own everyone else nearly as much as we own Mexico, and conversely, they aren't owned by everyone else nearly as much as they are owned by us.

Holland is man for man the most talented nation in this world right next to Brazil. Problem is they know it and can't get their business together.

Hope no one got too bent out of shape over the lack of an [R] in the titles. Your lazy mod is just now getting around to checking out this thread and now it's pretty much a moot point.

Notice how close mexico and USA are apart - 10 points. The teams are all pretty close. The rankings are based on the last 8 years. It's just a yard stick since they can't play each other that often. Don't obsess over it.

Well they have tied Italy twice, in 94 and again in 02, while having the better of the play IMHO. They just might do it next time.
