That is big news, and I think a good decision for the kid. And the duration is just about right and gives him terrific freedom hopefully at the right time (20 at the time the contract expires). Should be interesting to see the final wrap-up and how this goes. I am happy he decided against going to Europe for now.

I like this part
Adu will also be at MLS Cup festivities in Los Angeles, prior to this weekend’s championship match between Chicago and San Jose. An ABC television interview during the match is likely.

Thanks Gersman.
After living off clips, I'm looking forward to seeing him in a game (when will he play, I wonder). I really hope this works out well for him.

for the record, the gdf Washington Post had this about 50 minutes before I put it up on my site, although I didn't realize it until afterward.
I've since updated it to disput their mention of a 6-year deal, not possible under FIFA rules.
I've also linked to Grant Wahl's piece on SI which is very thorough and well-sourced, with league people speaking on the record.
someone mentioned seeing him. To confirm, Adu will play with the USA 88s against the Brazil 88s on ESPN or ESPN 2, live, Friday night Dec. 5. - as part of the Nike friendlies.
FSW will have two other games from this event on tape.

Grant sez it's 4 years with 2 years of options, also not possible under FIFA rules.

This is great, but which team is he going to be relegated to?

Would three years with three years of options be legal?

yes, but it seems to me the options are not really binding. Freddy could play for three years and before the 2007 MLS season begins, prior to his 18th birthday, tell MLS to FO and go to Europe for nothing.
there might be a fee re a tribunal for development, a la Zurab Khizanishvilli to Rangers, but it would be nothing like a big-time transfer deal.
I say Freddy still brings big-time value for the league, just in terms of publicity, fan buzz.

I was about to sign into my yahoo e-mail account when I saw that they had a link to soccer on the front page of their site. I figure, hey, I'll help out soccer and click the link and then I see the news.
I'm glad to hear it. Next year I'll have to get the MLS Shootout package.
Great signing for the league. Great news for soccer in America.

Yep. That's what I'm (kind of) afraid of, that the decision will be made according to short term profit motive rather than the best interests of his development as a player. I actually won't be surprised, though, if they take their time before inserting him into the lineup. It seems like the MLS environment doesn't have the same degree of pressure to cash in on a big investment in a new player as does the NBA or NFL.
Gersman, thanks again, this time for the heads up about the youth game/TV (and correction).

I just hope that Freddy does indeed make it to his 18th birthday without a major injury. One thing that is hard to watch about the MLS is a lot of the hacking from players that don't seem to be even close to getting the ball.
I know this happens in all leagues, but I am concerned that a lot of players will not want to be on Freddy's 14 year old highlight reel and he'll be on IR very quickly.
I know that it's a part of the game, but seemingly too big a part of the MLS game. Just my opinion- that's what we're here for, right?
I'd love to hear if anyone agrees with me.
