FIFA signs deal to broadcast 2010 WCup in Africa

Oct 29, 2008

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP)—FIFA announced a deal with African broadcasters Wednesday to air the 2010 World Cup on free television and radio in 41 sub-Saharan countries.

The agreement with the African Union of Broadcasters (AUB) guarantees that all 64 tournament matches played in South Africa will be distributed in English, French and Portuguese.

The deal does not include the host country or Nigeria.

“We always promised that 2010 would be an African World Cup and with today’s cooperation agreement we have made a big step toward achieving this goal,” FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

FIFA expects to earn $3.2 billion in television and marketing revenue from the 2010 finals.
